Bungie MMO De-confirmed

Well although Bungie is a rather eccentric developer it looks like the recent "confirmation" that their next game was an MMO was greatly exaggerated. Taken from the Bungie Weekly Update posted today:

Tired of pretending that he's not a -blam!-in' rock star from Mars, David Aldridge inhaled a huge hit of David Aldridge at GDC yesterday. Subsequently, his face melted off and children wept over his exploded body. After the childish tears, gelatinous gibs, and acrid smoke cleared, an industrious journalist noticed the final slide from David's GDC deck which apparently proclaimed that we were hiring for a "massively... multiplayer action game." Ruh oh.

Now, in rehearsal Aldridge was convinced that everybody got the joke. It was all in the delivery, he assured us, and he was certain it was clear that he was playfully riffing off of the recent rumors. Unfortunately, most people can't figure David out ? they can't process him. And we don't expect them to. You can't process David Aldridge with a normal brain. You'd need tiger blood and Adonis DNA.

While I'm sure most people have noticed it's not that straightforward it does seem to say that the seemingly MMO rumor was a joke taken out of context.

Anyways seeing as after 4 games Bungie hasn't even done anything of the greater Halo universe and has only focused on some superman-ish quiet guy in power armour killing aliens then I just hope that their (or 343's) next release isn't Halo related, because it would be the exact same thing once again.

Trust me, he's been on my nerves in another thread or two.

But Bungie's next game can't be Halo because they don't own the rights anymore. 343's will DEFINETLY be Halo though since they were the studio created to turn Halo for Microsoft what CoD is for Activision. Yearly or less installments with a lot of technical issues.

Bungie's had some bad luck lately with rumors with this and the recently squashed rumor that they laid off 30-some employees because Activision told them to. Which makes no sense because while they're in a partnership with them, not owned by them.

That's cool to see Bungie flexing their muscles on something other than Halo. I mean, it is a great series, but the games were getting stale. I want to see what they can do with something new. And hopefully other designers and authors will keep the Halo universe alive.

As far as I can tell there's no reason to pre-judge what they're going to make like that. Personally I don't like Halo either, but I don't just show up in any random thread related to it and start badmouthing it and trying to piss people off, because I'm able to appreciate that other people can enjoy it. You can say that you don't like Halo when Halo is the focus of the discussion, but people seem to be drawn to a topic about a game company they already know they don't like which will be moving onto a new IP because they didn't like the old IP. What possible contriubtion to the discussion could that make? It's just that these people will take any opportunity, and I do mean any, to make a snarky comment about Halo and they still expect people to take them seriously.

Especially since all these sneery comments are virtually identical.

To actually say something on topic, I don't really mind what genre their next game is. Anything other than an FPS would obviously be interesting, but I wouldn't blame them if they stuck with the genre that they've built themselves out of. Of course, if the game is more or less the same as what they've done before with only superficial changes, that would be disappointing...

Eh, it just always amazes me how people can manage to still make smartarsed comments about a series which they are officially no longer working on. It's not the criticism I mind, or at least not when it's well thought out, but it's the way that people feel the need to wedge it into any possible space without really saying anything. Threads inevitably descend into flame wars and derailment when the first poster is someone who has no interest in the discussion at hand.
