I think folks are being a touch too... literal, I think is the right word, about this. After all, we're talking about a game studio whose official mission statement includes world domination as a stated goal. (Escapist staff can dig up old Bungie press releases and see for themselves.)

It could be a way to say they're looking for smarts and creativity in their SDET team, or it could be a shot at the PS3's Cell architecture or something.

IQ =/= intelligence.
No, but it's a reasonably good test of certain spatial and analytical reasoning skillsets. Which seems like a fairly reasonable thing to look for in a programmer.
Yep, I got a high IQ and people think I'm a dumbass.

Though I do do mathematical equations for fun...

... Maybe it's the TYPE of intelligence that is important.

Not a bad idea, really, as the aptitude tests have a tendency to focus on spatial reasoning and critical awareness, which both sound like good things to ask for of a developer. I kinda see it as them asking for a sample of artistic creativity of a designer. Unnecessarily silly? Maybe, but hey, first time beyond just the xbox, after all.

I kinda get the feeling that Bungie is one of the only game studios that gets low IQ applicants at all.

and really what does having a high iq have to do with coding now or beta testing?
..aptitude for finding clever abstractions, ability to think in different layers, an understanding of methodology as well as interpretation of data..

If high IQ means something like that, then it has everything to do with this type of job.

..well.. on second thought, I don't think I've actually seen "high IQ" mean anything like that, ever.

I'm glad they're going multi-platform. I'm also glad Metal Gear Solid is going multi-platform.
I may have console fanboys of every flavor beating down my door because of this view, but I don't think anyone should have to miss out on a great game because they don't have the capital to fork over for another game system. I'd actually love to see more of this. How about PS3 and XBox versions of some Wii games? You wouldn't even have to give it a graphical upgrade to make me happy, and it beats the hell out of crappy PS2 ports from Wii.

When they take over the world, they'll need people with High IQ to keep the world in order of course. Silly non-believers...

To me it sounds like Bungie's sense of humor rather than a serious requirement

this is the developer that has a section of there office dedicated to world domination schemes

science has proven that IQ isn't everything. It's starting to approach almost worthless.

Congratst, you're 20 years behind.

I seen a lot of applications with a multiple choice for how much common sense you have. Maybe it is like that. Then again, the higher the IQ, usually a person usually suffers from some sort of social behavior problem.

Doesn't everyone put their IQ on their resume anyway?

I do.

Should I stop?
It's not so much what you put on your resume, but how you put it. For example, I've worked a good 4 years on home at the farm pulling weeds out of tomato fields, as well as harvesting them. Now, pulling weeds and harvesting tomatoes doesn't exactly sound good to most, if not all employers. If I reword them to "Organic crop maintenance technician" and "Agricultural quality control", however, not only does it look better, I haven't lied about anything. So if you're going to put your IQ down, it would be better to state it as something like "above average intelligence", so that it doesn't seem like you're trying to be arrogant.

Bungie Needs "High IQ" Help With PS3

Want to work at Bungie? Hope you've got a high IQ.

Now that Bungie is working on a multi-platform project with Activision [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/100329-Bungie-Signs-Deal-With-Activision], the studio needs employees that understand a console other than the Xbox 360. One of Bungie's new job listings reflects this, but just having PlayStation 3 skills isn't enough.

Bungie is looking for a software development engineer with experience in PS3 software testing, debugging, and troubleshooting. Being able to program in C# is a must, as is experience with SQL queries. You've got to be able to communicate, work with a team, and have an appetite for high quality. Oh, you better have a high IQ too.

The studio lists "High IQ" right alongside all of the other requirements for the job, which seems a little odd. Does this mean Bungie requires the submission of an IQ test along with a resume? It'd be rough if a candidate meets all requirements, but he/she somehow has an abhorrently low IQ.

I had always thought that the majority of IQ tests were a big load of baloney, but apparently they're important to Bungie. I guess putting together Halo on steroids [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/100339-Sony-Exec-Bungie-Deal-Gives-PS3-Fans-Halo-on-Steroids] requires a high score on standardized aptitude tests. In reality, this is probably just Bungie's way of saying "don't be a dunderhead," but a much nicer way of putting it. If you're a PlayStation 3 software developer, I don't really see how you can be a dunderhead anyway.

What is considered a high IQ? 105? 110?

And well Mensa don't really like using the word I>Q, and instead talk about what precentage of the population you belong to, as in:

Top 2% most intelligent people in the world.

PS: No I am not one of those :(
EDIT: But I did solve a 4x4x4 rubiks cube on my own.

Aside from Halo 1 i have yet to play and like a game from Bungie. Just my opinion.
And that comment has zero input on the topic at hand. Good job!

OT:
I don't really see how you'd even have to put High IQ there in the first place. They're looking for a Software Engineer? Those guys generally have enough IQ, seeing as how they actually made it through their education.

Wonder what 'high' means. Probably just a way to keep out the less serious job seekers if I had to guess; would cut back on applications. IQs really don't mean much, I can't see it being a very high consideration.

I supposedly have an IQ of 140, so if I say it means nothing I probably know what I'm talking about.

(Whoo, paradox!)

Wait, what?

Just about the only thing an IQ test measures is how good you are at IQ tests. I guess they give a very VERY general indication of your intelligence, but that's it.
I've gotten scores ranging from 87 and 160 on three different IQ tests, applied by trained psychologists. Internet IQ tests have been even less accurate.

IQ tests are broken, though good ones can provide useful data.
