Bungie Officially Working on "Massively Multiplayer Action Game"

Commenting on recent rumors, Bungie reveals it is working on an MMO, but it won't be "WoW in space."

At the Game Developers Conference, Bungie's Lead Network Engineer David Aldridge confirmed the rumors that Bungie is currently working on making an MMO, but denied the rumors that it will be "WoW in space." There was no comment on several other rumors, such as it being an "MMO FPS" or being titled Destiny, but it was confirmed that the game will not be Halo-related.

I suppose it was only a matter of time before this announcement was made. Last year at GDC, another Bungie Rep, Joseph Staten, responded to a question with another question: "Wouldn't it be great if we could make a world that was always there for you?" Apparently, Bungie thinks it would most certainly be great.

While no additional details have surfaced, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the new game has some sci-fi elements, as a laid-off contractor [http://kotaku.com/#!5762663/is-destiny-the-next-game-from-the-creators-of-halo] might cynically refer to any sci-fi MMO the people who laid him off are making as "WoW in space," while the people making said game would vehemently deny it was anything of the sort. It would also groove with the fact that Bungie's most successful games, the Marathon and Halo franchises, were both science fiction themed.

While I hate to throw the phrase around, if anyone might be able to make a "WoW killer", it would probably be Bungie.

Are they tight lipped or what? "Hi, yeah, we're making a mmo."

. . .details?

"It's a mmo."

. . . uh huh.

"It's not halo!!!"

/facepalm

I wonder how long they've been working on it.

I doubt they care about "challenging" WoW. After all, they are working for Activision. If anything WoW could be supplying them some of the funds to make the game.

As for the game itself, I'm interested in seeing where it goes.

-EDIT-

The Bungie Weekly Update has said that this was a poorly handled joke given by David Aldridge at the conference and is not true.

Personally I think this was all Stosh's fault.

God I am glad it isn't Halo.

And oh how I hope they are thinking out of the box to establish themselves as a company that can deal with more than a single IP.

God I wish the 'WoW killer' phrase would just dissapear from use. Anyone using it, that believe it to be true, are just plain idiots or short sighted.

(I know the OP only meant it as a reference point)

Ah man, it's jinxed now... someone said the company/game could be a "WoW killer" and that means it will fail... LoL I wouldn't say that Bungie would go with a shooter MMO but you can't put it by them since they did make Halo.

Like a said in a similar thread, I love Bungie but not a big fan of MMOs, and I have no idea where I stand on this. I only hope Bungie can do a great job at this and end up like several other MMOs and quickly die off.

I also have a felling this news post is going to generate some hate so I'm leaving this thread now.

The WoW Killer phrase will never become true, if anything, it would be a WoW Contender and possibly take a small chunk of subscriptions. They would have to spend about 7+ years of Development time in a year to even Match WoW with how far it has come along. Which is impossible....

Oh, that's pretty cool. Way too early to actully have an opinion about it though. Not that people will care about that. No, they will scream out their hatred untill they have to stop and breath. Then continue.

Well... since it's an MMO I assume there is going to be a monthly fee...

Hopefully not, but if so then I won't be getting this.

Come on Bungie, I want something good to come of this.

Edit: Also why is it still news/comment worthy that they're not working on a Halo game?

Didn't we all know this about 5 months ago when they announced that they weren't working on a Halo game and pretty much haven't changed that stance since?

Maybe I'm missing something...

AHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHHA. heh. You crack me up. Another mediocre game that will get blown out of a proportion because all of the other mediocre games that they've made before were blown out of proportion. Hype breeds Hype.

I'm going to guess it's a game where you play as a "Super Sergeant" fighting the forces of the "pontificate" which controls the "Not-Halos" relics from an ancient space-faring race of "Plot devices".

Yep all those mediocre [http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox/halo-combat-evolved] games [http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox/halo-2] that [http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/halo-3] scored [http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/halo-reach] 90s [http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/myth-the-fallen-lords]... totally blown out of proportion cause, hey, it's popular but that doesn't mean it could possibly be... good?

Subjective opinions are subjective. An industry based upon buying add space and selling subscriptions can skew from truth to something a bit less "inflammatory." Couple that with the grotesque funds provided by blind brand loyalty, and you have yourself an excuse, and disguise, for mediocrity.

All of my assumptions aside, I simply found the health and weapon mechanics to be abhorrent. It should never take more than one shot in the head to kill someone that isn't miles tall. The fact that there was always a best weapon and that not using said weapon gimped you severely also did not hold water with me.

Something being popular doesn't make something bad, and though I do love to be contrarian, but being popular doesn't make something good either.

Besides, even tasteless paste is better than shit.

could it be a Marathon MMO?

please, be

I found Marathon to be a pretty interesting universe, would be kinda cool like a Doom MMO or a System Shock MMO

I mean, the universe of those games was never all that explored, would be nice doing it ^-^

I don't think we can call it a possible WoW killer when we don't know anything about it. Personally I think there won't be a WoW killer unless/until Nintendo get around to commisioning a Pokemon MMO. Come on Nintendo; this is one way of milking a franchise I would support!

Normally I'd go into the balancing of Halos multiplayer and how it all works out pretty damn well... but I have an early start tomorrow and I'm too tired to go into it.

Instead I'll just say that because a game has features you disapprove of or a balancing system you personally find unfair doesn't make it mediocre. Halo is popular and has brand loyalty, because the titles were good.

I always wonder how Halo would be regarded in its current state if it wasn't popular and the 'other mainstream' choice.

I'll just go on enjoying my Big Team Slayer...

I hate MMOs but I love Bungie, sci-fi and (here hoping) space sim games (god that is one DEAD genre).

I'm also really interested to see if they will release this on the 360 -- currently the only one of the three (proper*) platforms not to have an MMO on it -- and I really feel that is one BIG market they're missing out on...
