Oh man, I loved the Starfighter games for the PS2. Wonky stories and stereotypical characters aside, the space dogfights were fast-paced and intense, the ground-attack missions didn't feel like slow grinds, the missions were varied enough that they never got stale, and there was so much to do in each level. Not only that, but they created workable multiplayer modes that weren't straight deathmatches. Capture the Flag in a starfighter? Yes please!
If Bungie makes a space combat game, it could re-launch a whimsical genre in a time beset on all sides by realistic shooters. It wouldn't even have to be particularly good. The Bungie name would sell enough for it to get the exposure it needs. Then other devs will see its success, and more games will follow. Who knows? Maybe people will start caring about the space program again. I mean, who doesn't want to be a space fighter pilot?
