Buy Wasteland 2, Get Wasteland 1

The upcoming Wasteland 2 will include a copy of the original end-of-the-world RPG classic from 1988.

There's a reason that a small but very dedicated segment of the gaming population is so excited about inXile's upcoming end-of-the-world RPG Wasteland 2. That reason would be the original Wasteland, the brilliant 1988 post-apocalyptic epic that inspired the far more well-known Fallout [http://www.amazon.com/Fallout-Vegas-Ultimate-Edition-Xbox-360/dp/B0065NP6NC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1341897803&sr=8-2&keywords=Fallout+New+vegas] franchise and, for many of those lucky enough to have played it, made an impression that lasts to this day. Alas, the challenges of making a quarter-century-old DOS game run on modern PCs meant that those who missed it were likely stuck in that state forever.

Until tonight, that is. Because tonight, inXile chief Brian Fargo revealed that Wasteland 2 will include a copy of the game that started it all. "The number one request we had during our Kickstarter campaign was to have the ability to play the first game. Fortunately EA has continued to support us on this project and has granted us the ability to bring the original to the players," he said. "It certainly will not be a pre-requisite to understand Wasteland 2, but it adds some extra flavor if you did play the prequel."

Fargo said on Twitter [https://twitter.com/BrianFargo] that EA's terms for allowing the inclusion of Wasteland were "very fair," but clarified that it cannot be released prior to, or separately from, Wasteland 2. How exactly the game will be made to run on current system is also still being hashed out. "It's too early for me to know all the detailed issues with including the original Wasteland," he said.

Wasteland 2 [http://wasteland.inxile-entertainment.com/] is being developed for the PC and Mac, and is currently targeted for launch in October 2013.

EA offered 90 days of free distribution on Origin to all kickstarter funded games that is the only thing EA have to do with the project but obviously they had to make sure EA were willing to let the original wasteland be distributed through the service.

...Um, there's nothing that says that EA is publishing Wasteland 2, nor has any part in its development. Merely that the inXile team has succeeded in licensing the rights to include the original Wasteland, much like they secured the rights to actually create a "Wasteland 2".

If you do a scouring search of the Kickstarter page, you will be hard pressed to find more than a passing mention of EA in any of the videos, and near as I can tell, you will find none at all in print.

...So, expecting EA to screw this up seems a little like expecting AT&T to screw up your Verizon Wireless call because of Alexander Graham Bell.

1988? Bloody hell. I was 8 years old then, didn't even have a computer. I have no idea how good Wasteland is/was, should I be excited for this sequel?

Also I think EA own the rights to Wasteland 1, the Wasteland name was sold off to Konami and then bought up by the Wasteland 2 guys, so I'm assuming they would be unable to release Wasteland 1 outside of EA's blessing.

OT: I'm a bit disappointed Wasteland 1 will only be released when Wasteland 2 comes out, it would be nice for people who already purchased a copy of 2, to be able to play it ahead of time in prep for 2

well if they broker the deal well enough they could make it like a preorder bonus situation as these situations have precedents

Fallout was created because Fargo couldn't get the rights to Wasteland. It was the original post-apoc game, although without the whole retro-50s sci fi setup. Think 80's sci-fi with a cold war origin story, mutant bunny rabbits and vegetables that throw bits of themselves at you. Less darkness and more wackiness. Same amount of ultra-violence though.
Aaaaaand, I have never played ANY of the Fallout games either. I looked at the new Fallout games, but giant sandbox games scare me. I get lost easily. >.>

The rights to actually make the game aren't with EA oddly enough. EA sold the trademark sometime in the 90s, to another company, forget who, and they later opted not to renew the trademark, at which point Fargo refiled for Wasteland.

Yes, yes you should.

Consider it this way, you're two years older than me, you played the original Fallout or Fallout 2? You liked them? If not, then change your mind! :p Otherwise, if yes, then absolutely. This is where Fallout originally came from.

Oh god, skip the new ones, go dig up the original games, they're not really sandboxes at all.

Yes please, loved Wasteland! Man, I just wish it would come with Fountain of Dreams as well, it being the spiritual successor! But I guess that's a bit much to ask. And I think I just lost every person on this thread. "What you talkin' aboot, Willis?"

Alrighty, I got my shovel and creditcard, let the shovelling begin! If Fallout turns out to suck, prepare for my tears piling up in your inbox.
