I'm still flabbergasted that they 'didn't anticipate' the volume. They're releasing a free service that allows users of gamings largest franchise (one who's community is notoriously standoffish/douchy/trolls/etc.) to more effectively wave their e-peens at one another. What did they think was going to happen?

And they can't claim ignorance of the technical aspects of running such a system. This is Activision were talking about here. The company ultimately responsible for WoW, which probably has a larger server overhead than the rest of the gaming industry combined.

The "they just don't understand" mentality must be some kind of virus.

The PC version of the game has its share of rank hackers, and the occasional wall / headshot script hacker. It's equal parts sad and pathetic, but that's what you roll with when you play on PC.
Personally, that game is fun, but also frustrating. It's getting to the stage where people are forgoing aiming down the sights, as hipfire spraying with SMGs is just so powerful and effective. Yawn :(

The issue with such a service on the PC is that it's essentially advanced stat-tracking on a platform where people are notorious for being able to easily hack their stats.
*Thinks back to the xbox live MW2 leader boards*

Yeah, I guess that guy who had 70.000.000 kills before release and stayed at the top of the leaderboards for months (he may still be there now) was completely legit. I mean hey, its xbox, how could anyone hack that?!?!
I wasn't trying to claim that the other platforms were perfect, I'm just trying to say that hacking on the PC is still a hell of a lot easier than on the other platforms. The hacked kills on the leaderbords of the 360 version were more to do with the laziness of Infinity Ward (and the incredible inability of CoD developers to fix issues which have been with their engine for a long time) than the innate 'hackability' of the console.

Does that mean that people are actually buying into this crap? I dread to live in a world where we pay for such a useless service as the norm

I don't give a crap about Elite. I just want real weapons stats.

Damage Multipliers per weapon
Precise damage amounts
Precise range cutoff
recoil profile
Centre speed
hipfire size
Proficiencies effect
raise time, drop time and ADS time.

These have been the bread and butter of anyone who wants to play COD withotu scrabbling around in the dark with no god damn clue what is going on. You cannot follow logic. It's already established that guns with smaller calibre do more damage or that guns firing heavier bullets have less recoil.

Den Kirson delivered for previous COD games but he is apparently engrossed in Skyrim at the moment and nobody else knows how to hack out the game stats. The in game stats are worse than useless, they outright lie.

Eh, whatever. MW3 isn't even at the top of Steam sales.

Go Skyrim!

It's just plain stupid that they wouldn't be ready. But that shows how little faith they had in it. And now the experience is soured for a lot of people. Activision and Beachhead are just plain fail. They can't make a competent game experience in the first place, then they can't get their extra money maker going.
Yes, because if there's anyone who needs to think about their profit margins, it's Activision.

OT: That's a pathetic professional standard they're maintaining. Sounds like they've released a dysfunctional product.

Sorry, but hacking the stats before the game is even released and it not being fixed for months is precisely: "notorious for being able to easily hack".

"more to do with the laziness of Infinity Ward"

Riiiight. So when console stats get hacked, blame the developer. But when PC stats get hacked in any way PCs are all of a sudden "notoriously easy to hack" as if they are any easier to hack than consoles and the developers have every right to give up. It is painfully obvious how easy it is to hack consoles! An xbox 360 is nothing but a PC of a locked-down standard plugged into a network, the network is just as easy to hack whether it is plugged into a PC, 360, PS3 or Wii or whatever. It's a network.

Consoles are a lot of things to a lot of people, one thing they are not is a magic bullet against cheating and hacking. Modding 360s is so well established now and even PS3 is broken open. Any system can be hacked and console networks are in so many ways more vulnerable than PC for dependence on the assumption of limited capability on the client side. But if the clients side - the console - is modded and isn't playing by the rules. Then the system of fairness fails catastrophically.

What really bugs me is not the fact that they wont release it for PC, its the fact that they always say that they are "committed as ever to the PC".
But they are committed as ever to the PC. They have kept the exact same dont give a flying fuck attitude that they have always had.
frankly I'd prefer a lot LESS commitment, stop trying to control everything and just give us the game, open it up to use dedicated servers, and really the only thing they have to do is tie into Steamworks for authentication/joining-friends.

Sometimes less is more.

COD4 had pretty much no support on PC and it was great. You could have insane things like 50 players in Chinatown. And custom maps as well even. You didn't need an ongoing service, just give us the options. Minecraft is a very hands off game and as been hugely successful on PC.

PC does best without support, when you let the fans do their own thing. The problem came in MW2 when they thought they'd give us the "great gift" of IWNET and matchmaking. A poison chalice. All the shit Activision tries to give PC, they can't seem to fathom how inferior it is to what we PC gamers already did for ourselves, I think they are so blinded by the brown-nosing they get for Xbox 360 PS3 (where COD really is some of the best gaming you can get on console) they seem to assume that's universal.

We don't want elite. No one gives a crap about leaderboards. Everyone knows the top of the leaderboards is not the best player, just the most obsessive. Or at least on PC we know. If they didn't hack the game, or glich the game, or prey on the weakest players for just the high score. PC gaming has always valued tournaments more, that is where the best compete with the best and only the best of the best can win, and what's more important is HOW they win not just a raw score on a leaderboard.

If you look at the player stats, Counter Strike 1.6 isn't too far behind for peak players compared to MW3. I love how a 12 year old game is still more appealing than a current gen one. I wouldn't be surprised if MW3 player numbers plummet after about a month.

Just give pc ranked dedicated servers. That will make up for no elite.
Pretty much this. Nobody I know gives a damn about MW3, let alone Elite, because of this missing feature.

Pc doesn't need elite anyway, clans have done fine for a long time without help from within the game.

Yeah, there have never been glitches/hacks in the console version.

Oh wait, I quit playing MW2 because of infinite supply drop on the PS3. That and I'd already had enough CoD4.

It's people like you that contribute to the mindset of "LOL ONLY PC HAS THIS PROBLEM" even if you are slightly more eloquent about it. It's saying the same thing.
