Calling all people who can't draw

I can't even rip off XKCD---my stick figure skills are lacking.

When I was in fourth grade I had to take an art class---and the art teacher sent a letter home to my mother suggesting that she have me evaluated for mental retardation because when he looked at my art he thought I had the cognitive ability of an infant. (my mom flipped her shit and got the guy fired.)

Really? Because being on the alert for cognitive impairments seems like it'd be a positive quality in a teacher. Even if you were an intrepid boy genius, better you get evaluated and found to be fine than slip through the cracks because no one gave a rt's patootie, right?

It takes practice, just following a guide isn't going to get you results instantly. Drawing isn't assembling a desk there's more to it. Keep playing with it, keep a loose grip on your pencil and just make lighter looser shapes and then detail it up and eventually something will come out of it.

Have you tried to put together a desk? Mine is glass and metal, it was an art to make all that hold together and not drop the 60-80 lbs of glass on me.

I can't draw worth shit but I paint mini's so that counts for my artistic requirments right?

Bah that's art, my dad does something of that sort.

I can't draw at all. I can form grand detailed images in my mind, but my hands just can't translate it to paper. Also have horrible handwriting.

I have the same problem. I get these amazing images in my head, but my hands are incapable of translating them to paper.
I've found I have a similar problem with Mulitmedia projects. I get all these ideas in my head, but when I try and recreate them in say Flash or Photoshop, it never EVER turns out the way I have it in my head.

Yeah. It's true. My teachers always wondered what the hell was wrong with me. I am way too impatient when it comes to drawing and painting and such. I can't handle it.

I also have trouble communicating my story ideas into words...

I have these problems as well, minus the bad handwriting.

Those problems wouldn't be an issue if I wasn't so lazy...
I'll put more effort into it next week...

I can draw (kind of) and i can get ideas, but i can never visualize them and put them properly onto paper, so my drawings end up looking pretty bad.

Really the only advice I could give you is to practice your ass off. Set reasonable goals for yourself, and don't expect to be able to draw a live portrait within 2 hours on your third month. It takes many many years. I know that kinda sucks, but there really is no magic trick or shortcut to it.

But hey, if you can accept the fact that most things you draw will suck for the next year or two and still find the dedication to keep going at it, you can achieve great things. Just look at where I'm at now [http://artbyruben.blogspot.com] (the top post is ZBrush digital sculpting which may not interest you, but there's some good old pencil-and-paper anatomical study and a bunch of portraits further below).

I've never had any classes or lessons. It's all just practice, ever since I was able to hold a pencil.

My skills when it comes to drawing is very limited, though can say, i´m not that shitty when it comes to do a model in clay, or even carving something out of wood (or potatoes, wtf?). But my preferred way to show of my artistic skills is to blow someone's head of making the blood splatter on the wall behind them, I like to call myself the Van Gogh of headshots xD

I can draw frogs really well. And stick figures. Beyond that, I'm not great. But I feel artistic enough what with theater, photography and writing skills, so I also never really felt the need to pursue or cultivate my drawing skills.

To people saying they can think of the ideas amazingly in their head, but can't get it down on the paper.. Isn't that what drawing is ABOUT?
I mean, you can do anything in your mind.

But OT: Naah, my limit is a few stick figures. But I'm fine with that.

i really want to draw, and i keep trying, but i just suck at it, I'm left handed, and i keep rubbing the lines with my hand, and even more detrimental, I'm WAY too impatient to get everything to look just right.

My hand tends to disobey what my brain is saying. I can't even draw a straight line without a ruler, and even then it ends up crooked. I just can't keep my hand calm.

I can't draw, but I can paint. It's odd. I've actually had two paintings go to a "Spotlight on Youth" showing, and one of those went to a museum for a a few weeks. It was pretty cool.

Hmm,.. I guess the problem is the fact that other than the casual namewriting in first grade i've always written on a computer? Causes handwriting to be back at STARTING stage even when you get older. Havent bothered to train it because, HAI Technology.
