A two-weapon limit causes you to be more resourceful and thoughtful in your gameplay decisions.
We can argue over the pros and cons of regenerative health versus health packs until we're blue in the face. Seriously guys, I thought we were over this. Regenerating health causes you to need to be more cautious in your approach of every room while health packs let you take way more damage. Regenerating health just means you don't have to go fishing for health packs. If regenerating health is so casual, why don't all of you have all of the Legendary achievements on every installment of Halo?
AM I REALLY HEARING GAMERS COMPLAIN ABOUT PUZZLES? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

These things are minor characteristics of a game, as you should all know by now, or else Halo and Call of Duty may as well be considered the same game. Duke Nukem is going to be awesome for all the reasons Duke Nukem has always been awesome. Its skeleton is your generic shooter, but the real meat and tits of the game is going to be its hilariously over-the-top camp and goofiness. I doubt most of you are even old enough to have played Duke Nukem 3D before it hit the XBLA with the way you're arguing over this.

If they put their name to it then they are bloody well responsible for the quality of the product. It's a poor defense to claim that they received a poorly-implemented IP, and then in lieu of actually improving it did nothing but kick it out the door as fast as possible.

It was gearbox's choice to implement a two weapon limit.
It was gearbox's choice to switch to regenerative health.
It was gearbox's choice to add in puzzle elements.
It is gearbox's fault the game sucks.
And these have worked in other games, so why not in this one?
I'm going to chalk it up to Gearbox being terrible developers.

There were puzzles in the original Duke Nukem 3D, what's the big deal about that?

Perhaps a cooperation of terrible work on both developers' parts.

i think many of us were expecting an old fashioned fps game, a game that had the features of the old games, having all the guns ,healthpacks which do influenciate the game, yes i agree that they can make the game easier but can easly make it much harder if they aren't many and you are not careful.

"we" wanted a oldschool game with the sound, graphic and story quality that is available today.

im still intrigued why puzzles made it bad, Half Life had it and let me tell you it helped the game to take a break from the series of gun fights.

...just my opinion but letting this game 12 years in teh oven really affected it, specially if you kept switching it from oven to oven

That's fair enough, but it's a little unrealistic to expect that the game was put on hold for so long and just left in a time capsule.

Yes, puzzles are a lovely addition to any game if they're done properly. Not to mention the fact Duke Nukem 3D had such poorly designed levels that some of them FELT like puzzles. :p

We know. The level headed among us tend not to panic about videogames and videogame companies, nor do we tend to level insults at anyone regarding their choices in videogaming.

(I'm convinced that the noisiest and most insulting people tend to be either 14 years old, or, must be the type of folk that gravitate towards fringe political rallies and carry signs while screaming about "babykilling abortionists" or "corporationy corporate corpses" depending on the side of the fence they're on)
No, I think it's more that the people who are being so vocal against it are the ones who made the most jokes about it being vaporware for so long. They can't believe it's coming out, and now that it has or is about to, best to make fun of it as though it was in development only two years instead of being in developmental hell for 12.

I'm looking forward to this game. Very much so. I think it will be worth the Balls of Steel price, and I also think that Gearbox may patch the console versions to allow us to carry all the weapons at once later.

You know, maybe instead of constantly spamming your opinion on something you could let people form their own opinions.

The best I heard about this is that BBC did a report on it and interviewed the creator (good ol' Randy) and 2 guys from a game shop (labelled as a 21 year old gamer and a 28 year old gamer). The question of the topic is whether it will compare with modern day titles and what was brilliant about the matter was how they treated it like a game made 14 years ago, not a game that took 14 years to make. This was incredibly relevant when they were wondering whether the graphics would still consist of obvious polygons...it was quite spectacular. What was also brilliant was how the gamer's were deemed professionals on the matter...the equivalent would be going to the museum, picking a 5 year old and ask him what he thought about the rapid decline in malachite production.

Also, the 21 year old gamer's response on the matter was "I dunno, I haven't heard about this game, I only play CoD and Fifa"...yeah brilliant reporting skills there mate...

The only thing that's bothering me about DNF is the fact that it's horribly optimized.

Twelve years of hype and constant trading between shitty developers means lots of angry, disappointed gamers saying how disappointed and/or angry they are.
+1

The sad thing is that the game, as flawed as it is, is still better entertainment than a lot of the other big shooters out on the market.

Alrighty, I've played the game... And the NUMBER ONE thing I hate about it is that it was optimised for consoles....

Eg. you're only allowed two weapons at a time...

If only for that, I really don't like the game....

Gearbox actually got the F**king game finished and released!
I don't care if the game sucks, Gearbox were actually able to put it on the market which was something 3D realms failed to do for 10 F**king YEARS!
Also, Gearbox didn't implement those design decisions, 3D realms did.
The game was Brown when Gearbox got it, so stop complaining about the company that got your damn game released and maybe aim some of that distaste to the company that kept you in the dark for a decade.
Basically, you can polish a turd to perfection but at the end of the day, it's just a shinier turd! Which is a shame because I loved Duke Nukem 3D.

Really? 3D realms, the old-skool developers, were chiefly responsible for going for a Rebounding HP meter and a 2-weapon-limit? And all the alterations to weapons, pacing and items motivations that come with that?

But these are the facts: Gearbox attained the project after 3d Realms worked on it for almost a decade. Frankly, I wouldn't be suprised if all Gearbox was able to do were a few touches and basically finishing levels and such. Basically, most of the bad design decisions were 3D Realms. We knew this was coming. It's pretty much your fault for holding out hope. Just Saiyan.

Nice DBZ pun.

Anyways, I agree.

It's clear that Gearbox has no issue with having more than two weapons or non regen health, as seen in borderlands.

Who says there isn't an element of long-term strategy in a multi-weapon scenario?
Hell, I recall saving up rounds for the rocket launcher back in Doom for really nasty fights, or saving my pipebombs in Duke 3D to open potential secret walls up. Sometimes, I had to improvise even when I *did* have all the weapons, simply due to different weapons being more effective on different enemies, or in different environments.

Recognizing how and when the situation has changed is no less relevant than when you have 2 weapons as when you have 10 (assuming the game isn't horribly skewed for difficulty).

See, there isn't a strictly-superior version for gameplay mechanics; just what is appropriate for your game at that given time. Trends change, but that doesn't mean you won't come back to an older gameplay mechanic just for the sake of nostalgia.

Left 4 Dead was one of the only solid health-bar-n-pack shooters released mainstream in the last 4 years. Was it for nostalgia? Of course not! Would it have been better with regenerating health? Definitely not!

People seem to get stuck in thinking that Old Gameplay Mechanic = Inferior just because it is bad. Graphics scale with time. Audio scales with time. But whats big in mechanical design comes and goes; it doesn't ever become "better" or "worse" except when it is applied in a new way (which may or may not suck. Compare the games Geist and Mindjack to see this in action.)

Gearbox is not known for half-assing projects. They did there best. All your doing is making baseless assumptions out of your determination to not like it.
aka "Stop liking what I don't like."
"Just sayin'"
are you kidding? they sure as hell are known for halfassing, the pc version of borderlands was half assed out the ass, the multiplayer didnt work for most people till a few months after the release then they finally fixed it and the interface was shit, they did nothing to take any advantage of a mouse wheel or give the game a better interface for a pc
