The appeal is that you can appear to be funny without putting forth the effort to actually be funny. That is the appeal of all memes that have ever existed. Also whoever suggested changing all of the avatars to grumpy cat has my undying despisal.

The only explanation I have (and I mean this in the nicest possible way) is that the internet is full of retards who will mindlessly buy anything or do anything to cash in on the current 'Meme flavour of the month'. The best you can do is just ignore it until the well dries up and the next meme takes its place.
