Alright, so I know that most of you guys here on the Escapist hate rap. And for the most part I agree with you; however, Eminem seems to have changed that for me. Some of his new and recent songs dont seem like rap and they are extremely addicting.

For example:

So basically I am asking for everybodys opinion on the song and if it's a kind of rap that you will tolerate, or not.

The general rule is that if they're rapping, it's rap.

If they're not rapping but it has similar beats/instrumentation, then it is probably hip-hop or r&b.

So... this is rap.

Rap is merely a selection of beats and rhythms with lyrics set to it. Rap does not specifically entail...

Abuse of women, glorification of violence, glorification of mass consumption, preoccupation of wealth, generally being a douchewad fuck bag.

That's gangster rap. Which is bullshit.

So yes, its rap, because rap is actually a really enjoyable form of music. Sadly people don't realize rap and gangster rap are two separate things.

Yes it is still rap. Just because you like the girl that is a serial rapist/killer, doesn't change the fact that she is a serial rapist/killer.

i miss the likes of the 90's where a band had awesome drumming and voices and guitar but would break into a rap in the middle and then go back to tehir awesomeness. I thought it was cool.

Typical Cats are pretty awesome. Those Eminem songs aren't rap though. For it to be Rap, you need a beat, and lyrics in the form of a rap. Those two are missing the first condition. They have melodies etc. instead.

Yeah, people tend to forget about Missy Eliot, M.I.A., The BEASTIE Boys, Eric B and Rakim, Afrika Bambaataa, Mos Def, and countless other great non-gangsta rappers when they dismiss rap as a musical genre.

hmm... I was thinking moreso Linkin Park, specifically In The End, but alright, 80's definitely got there first. I can't decide if I like your cited song or not... It opens so in a pretty crappy way and has stupid lyrics, in my opinion. I am sad that I wasn't around to enjoy 80's dancing though, it's definitely my style.

My thoughts when I saw the title: "Don't just have forgotten an E, please don't have forgotten an E".

OT: Those aren't really rap, not my type of music, but I don't hate it as much as rap.

I miss when he was trying to get into the rap scene by being funny and facetious. Slim Shady, anyone?

Music industry guy in a rap thread, woo!

It is rap. He is rapping, therefore it is rap.

I don't mind some rap but I'm not really a fan of Eminem I must admit. While he certanly has undeniable vocal skill, I find the tone of his voice annoying to listen to for extended periods, and for a rapper, that's a deal-breaker as far as I'm concerned. More power to you if you like it, though.
