or what if its the same thing but they express it in a different way? less emphasis on the graphic nature and more on the emotions and romance of the thing...I suspect why eroitca *may*? be more popular amonst women? I know when I look at women in that way I don't think I do it the way a straight guy does

interestingly I read an article on Autostraddle about why there wasn't more femslash in the fanfic comunity and could it be something to do with disdain for female charachters and our dismissal of female sexuality? I would have thourght its because it doesn't appeal to hetero women? but I don't know...wish I could link but I can't

anyway I find it hard to condemn shipping when I do it all the time in my head (between female charachters)
Yeah, I'm... pretty sure it just doesn't really appeal to heterosexual women, and the fanworks scene is undoubtedly dominated by women. I mean, if it was because we demonize female sexuality or whatever, then wouldn't het not even be a thing? Het fanfic has plenty of sexually aggressive women in it. Slash fic's just more popular because it's double the attractive hot dudes.

Short answer: No

Long answer: No, because they're a hive of people who pin hordes of adjectives onto themselves in order to appear cool and/or accepted, regardless of weather they're telling the truth or not, they flaunt said adjectives like medals of honour and bash anyone who tells them to sit down and shut up about it. And then there's the SJWs, suffice to say Tumblr is their headquarters, and anywhere that's a breeding ground for their ilk is nowhere I approve of. And let's not forget the overreactions. A species of penguin is declining slightly? someone came out as believing they're really a wolf? organic food becoming unpopular? MADDAFUGGING RIOT ALL UP IN THIS , it's constant, somebody is always throwing a fit about some pointless twaddle that few other people would bat an eye at. And there's the people who perpetuate a set of pointless oppression olympics, leading to such showers of stupidity as people dig for how straight white men or whoever the hell else oppress them simply be virtue of existing. And there's the self diagnosers, who will label themselves with autism, OCD or any other conditions because they read a symptom list on wikipedia.

So no, I will keep disliking them for what they are.

First we have all the shipping, which in at least 87% of cases focuses on treating two hot male characters as gay sex objects.
.
is that really any different to straight guys obsession with lesbains?

EDIT: sorry "lesbains"
Yep; straight guys like yours truly don't pretend that there's anything socially acceptable about it, while the people who ship two canonically straight guys don't seem to understand why sex fantasies are a private thing, or why it's actually anti-gay to reduce them to fantasy objects.
Am I the only one to raise an eyebrow at this? Guys are mostly private with their fantasies?
C'mon, that's just silly. Almost all of my friends are guys and that's pretty much all they wanna talk about. Then again my friends are a bunch of assholes, so there's that.

I don't think it's anti anything to `ship`. It's pretty harmless fantasising. Obviously if you see some people as nothing but sexual it's not healthy, but I find it a bit ridiculous to be finger-wagging at some people's preferences- especially when it comes to made-up characters.

OT: I do find the tumblr hate weird, mostly because I never see the stuff people bang on about. It's pretty easy to avoid stuff you don't want to see on there. Tumblr being made out to be some theatrical super villain is just funny to me.

"SJW" is an almost meaningless pejorative, but I'm pretty sure one of the defining characteristics of the "SJW" pejorative is that they are really vocal. That's sort of like saying "I have a problem with Houston because of all the white kids listening to rap."
Yea, I suppose I was being redundant then.

I don't consider SJW's "people I disagree with", especially since, by the standards of this site, I am pretty much Pro-Political Correctness. I suppose its just an issue of definition.

What I tend to think are SJWs are basically people of the PC movement who tend to be overzealous at time, hence the warrior part of the title. They exist everywhere on the internet but the most visible group exists on tumblr for reasons others have pointed out.

While I think the "threat" and number of this group is way overstated, they still end up being a bit of an annoyance at times. For the most part, I tend to agree with most of their core ideas just not the way most go about spreading it. Nothing worse than seeing a message you agree with being argued badly for you.

But hey, at the end of the day, I have no stake in this. I just watch the fights these guys get into with the anti-PC brigade the same way I watch a football match: I may support a side but I really don't care about either teams. I'm just waiting for the inevitable violence that springs up after the match.

Demisexuality actually illustrates my main beef really well. It's supposed to be people who only feel sexual desire to pople they've got an emotional connection to, or something like that.
It was also made up by a 15 year old too. Either on the Gaia-online forums or her livejournal. I can't remember which.

Tumblr is where the bullied become bullies. Treat others as you wish to be treated. Don't expect me to care about your problems if you are going to act like that.

You're not a special snowflake. You are a human being like everyone else.

It speaks volumes about the state of society that people have developed a derogatory term, "social justice warrior", for people who voice their moral conscious.

And in direct response to that comic (demisexual isn't even a gender, smh...), here is a neat post about the history of demisexuality and how that term came about, largely through discussion on the AVEN (Asexual Visibility and Education Network) forums. Not, you will note, on roleplay forums.

http://pianycist.wordpress.com/2013/05/08/the-development-of-gray-asexuality-and-demisexuality-as-identity-terms/

And to be honest, the "it's not a real word" argument has never really held water for me. It's a perfectly respectable mashup of a common prefix with a defined root word. Where are words supposed to come from, exactly, if not through means like the above described? Maybe from a word tree in the deep exotic Amazon where linguists must go on pilgrimage to harvest only the ripest fruits which they slice open with a ceremonial knife and then listen to very carefully for a little whisper of the new word from the squashy insides of the giant fruit? I know compared to other languages English is bonkers, but it's not quite THAT bonkers.

You don't have to subscribe to the same label or whatever, just recognize that some people find it a really useful term to use to identify what they're feeling AND to find a community of similar people. Again, a lot of asexual or, really, anything-but-the-hypersexuality-sold-to-us-in-the-media folk find it very comforting to know they aren't broken, defective, or even alone in having feelings like this. It is a very useful term to them. And that's something that's pretty easy to respect - after all, they get to decide what's important to themselves, right?

All it takes is accepting that maybe something is more important to them than it is to you, and being cool with the idea that they know more about their sexual orientation than you do. Or, more generally, as the gospel from the great sages says... 'Be excellent to one another.' /sweet guitar riff
But here's the problem, why do people need to bond with gender/sexuality labels when their gender/sexuality is pretty much the same as the norm? I know plenty of people that are demisexual, it's basically only having a sexual attraction to people you form an emotional bond with first which is pretty much the idea behind majority of romance movies. "Media" as you call it isn't such a hivemind that they all try to sell hypersexuality, I've seen plenty of examples that refutes this. It does happen of course, but it's not nearly as pervasive and all encompassing as you would think. I'm all for people feeling ok about themselves, but making up bullshit in order to feel special is simply not the way to go with it.
It's not the same as the norm, the norm is that people find each other attractive through appearance, and if you don't have that you will feel marginalised and strange, thus, labels are created so people can better understand who they are and meet other who feel the same, so feel more 'normal' and accepted.

And if they want to feel special, who care? What about that gets your panties in a twist, Alek? Is there not enough special to go around?

If people want to identify as demi to feel better about themselves and their place in the world, who cares? Why are you standing gatekeeper over this? How is it hurting you?

tumblr is pretty much reverse 4chan. Full of random people who, instead of offending everyone and getting outraged at the drop of a hat, gets offended by everything and gets outraged at the drop of a hat.

Tumblr is loaded with scores of dumb, loud, passionate and yet uninformed teenagers that have not yet exhausted their energy for the things they will end up caring about much less within ten years. That of course describes a lot of the internet, but Tumblr is especially visible in this regard.

It's a lot more complicated then that.

Change "Social justice warrior" with "Klansman" and the argument holds about as much weight.

It isn't thrown at people who voice their moral conscious (hell, more people who speak out against the movement are doing the exact same thing when addressing it), it's a specific brand of (usually) left wing group-think that real feminists hate (the ones who aren't under 30 "fight the patriarchy that doesn't actually exists but who cares" brand which is more interested in yelling about why you should feel like a piece of shit for existing then making any argument or change. Assuming change is wanted since that would take away from things to complain about).

Like it or not, the public face of social justice is an ugly one, which is probably why there's been a sudden rise in the number of people calling themselves Egalitarians over the past few years and why the term has been take to mean equality for all instead of its former connotations as a part of the Libertarian philosophy.

What's wrong? Have we triggered you?

Right, low hanging jokes aside, I can kinda get behind this sentiment. Every site has its bad element and that's no reason to demonise the whole entity (hell just look at our very own slice of interweb). It's just that Tumblr's is just so vocal and fun to take the piss out of.

Surprisingly there's a decent amount of well informed people on this thread who must've created a Tumblr account at some point and found that it is literally whatever you want it to be. And then there's people who spend their time writing essays on why someone else is defining their sexuality wrong, that's dumb.

I have a tumblr account, I follow a guy who posts all these vintage comic book covers, because I like comics and seeing how they change over the years. I follow a bunch of food porn blogs, because I cook professionally and the sight of a well toasted creme brûlée gets me hard (kidding). I follow my sister in law because she's an incredibly talented graphic artist and a wonderful, empathetic person, so I know whenever she posts anything social justice related that it matters and I should probably educate myself on it. I follow a blog about being a sexual assault survivor, because it helps knowing that you've got (unfortunately) lots of other people who know what you're going through. Oh and I follow a few regular porn blogs, because as far as I'm concerned Tumblr is one of the best porn platforms on the internet; precise and descriptive tags, blogs for any conceivable fetish, no bullshit lead up, just whatever you're into, and lots of it. Seriously I would've thought the Tumblr hate might've lessened a bit just because of that.

I've seen way more radicalism and dumb, ignorant hatred in these forums then on my tumblr dash, because I don't follow people like that. And It's frankly worrying that we've come to a point where feminism and caring about social justice have become bad things, sure armchair activists are annoying, but at least they don't think they're too cool to give a shit. I'm honestly curious how many people here who say that tumblr hates all white men or whatever have actually created an account and seen any evidence of that. Because you have to SEARCH for that shit, like it's not even in the normal feminism tags because the people who moderate those tags don't want that toxic shit mixing with their reasonable message of equality. I've used tumblr for years and I'm a white, straight, Aryan-looking dude. Surely I should've been burned in effigy before now by the hordes of radical feminist other kin? No of course not, I've never even received an unkind anon message, and those are all over the fucking place, on any site like this.

And I'll say this for the large majority of the Tumblr user base, they wouldn't consider posting a bunch of gore porn and rape media on tags meant specifically for survivors of sexual assault and domestic abuse. You want to make a counter argument to that go ahead, rape is real, flashbacks are real, and dragging people back to the worst experience of their lives is unforgivable. Shame on whatever human offal in /b/ thought that was a good idea. Notice I didn't indict an entire user base of a popular website. Because that's fucking stupid.
