I personally can't navigate for shit.
A couple of years ago while we were on holiday in France, I decided for some unknown reason to cycle into the nearest town. We were up on a hill, and you basically just go down the road, turn right and carry straight on down the road; except for I cleverly turned left and ended up on an 11 mile round trip instead of about 6 :S And it was down either a dual carriageway or a 40/50mph speed limit road, which is pretty scary too.
Then just a couple of weeks ago I did the same thing; I decided to walk into Oxford from where I live, just for the hell of it, and the only way to do that really is to follow the river. I again cleverley took the wrong direction (though convinced it was the right one) and ended up in entirely the wrong town, not realising until I got there.
