Can Zombies exist or not?

Depends on your definition of "zombie." The thing is, in the Voodoo world, there are zombies.

Personally, I think they're people drugged out of their senses who undergo a zombie-like state out of some kind of quasi-religious fervor - not unlike certain Christian derivatives which go along with the idea of convulsing or speaking in tongues as a sign of divine influence.

As far as real life zombies go, it might go so far as having somebody who was mistaken for dead discovered by a Voodoo witchdoctor who "brings them back" and keeps them drugged up as their zombie slave in order to cow some followers.

Well, the 'living' zombies are made by a virus, which is basically rabies, so that type is possible, the undead is pretty much impossible though.

Once you die your brain stops working, therefore, there is nothing to stimulate your muscles to move.
unless it was like 28 days later and it was a virus.

they could, but the possibility vs say, a black hole killing us all, is very low. I think the robot apocalsype has a higher chance of happing.

I do not have any article saying they cannot exist or that they can. You see zombies have a lot of types these days, theres the classic reanimated dead who hunger for brains. Some who are the undead who hunger for flesh. Then theres the crazy people hungry for flesh but aren't technically dead.

The thing is although unlikely it is possible to make zombies exist in the non undead flesh eater variety. However the undead ones aren't really possible as you see being dead causes decay of muscles, now of course the undead wouldn't worry about organs failing or pain but without working muscles you can't do anything. They would just be some flesh and organs with very little muscle and couldn't even work their jaw.

Yes I put a lot of thought into this but I have never written a paper on it, perhaps I should what does the escapist think?

Undead are obviously out, but it is theoretically possible for a parasite to take over the host's brain, effectively producing zombies similar to those in 28 Days Later. I don'tthink tere are any that affect humans, at least not in a true zombie fashion, but it is posisble, if unlikely.

Apparently there is a disease affecting mice that causes them to attack anything around them, even natural predators like cats. If that disease makes the leap to humans... 28 Days Later happens.

As has been stated, you need to more clearly define "zombie".

Using drugs and hypnotism to produce obedient servants with little to no will of their own? Sure.
Disease induced unthinking berserker state? Well documented.
Ambulatory corpses with no vital functions? Biochemically impossible.

I hope that there is a zombie apocalypse.
I hope that every zombie fanboy out there that has ever spouted crap saying that "A Zombie Apocalypse would be so awsome!!!!1!!!ZOMGLOLZ!!1!" realizes how stupid they were for saying it, gets devoured by a zombie, and realizes the error of their ways.

How would a zombie apocalypse be anything other than completely terrible and horrifying?
Everyone you ever knew or loved now becoming a mindless enemy with no hope of a cure? The entire world and society crumbling? You spending the rest of your days simply struggling to survive, to find water, electricity, shelter, safety?

Sorry just so sick of Zombie Fanboys.
I know that's not what the thread was about but couldn't help myself :D
if its like *this* its in *demon voice*

but it WOULD be awesome!

even if you die, *IT WOULD SCHTILL BE AWRESOMME*

and yea, 28-days style is probably the only way, provided demonic possesion doesn't prove to be real (personally evil-dead-like zombies are the coolest way to do zombies).

whats worse with 28-days style is there is a chance it'll go left 4 dead style: SPECIAL INFECTED OH SHIT RUN.

Definition of zombies?

If you want to know about voodoo zombies, as in, actual zombies, then yes. And they do... or at the very least have.

The priest would utilize Tetrodotoxin (Puffer-fish poison) to paralyse their chosen target, at which point they would usually be declared dead, and buried. Once this is done, the priest will go to their grave, remove the "corpse", and revive it. Oxygen deprivation usually leads to brain damage, causing the zombie-like state.

The individual isn't dead, but superstition and a lack of medical understanding has lead to a lot of people believing that they are.

As for the more recent "zombies" (Ghouls), to the best of my knowledge no such condition exists in humans. There are a few examples of similar diseases in the animal kingdom (I can't remeber the exact details, but a sort of parasite that infects snails and causing them to commit suicide).

there is several parasites that work like that.

sadly Thankfully they have a habit of getting the host killed far too quickly, or kiling the host themselves.

I don't think the survival sounds fun, but I would enjoy the world without so many people. I think it would be a therapeuthic experience, actually getting to fight all the idiots of the world, instead of being told to try to communicate with them. It may not be so fun at a long term though.

Depending on your beliefs, cursed and/or magical and/or voodoo-created zombies may or may not exist.

Scientifically, actual "undead" zombies are impossible, because even a recently deceased body isn't going to move anywhere, no matter how powerful the FotM supervirus is.

Parasite zombies are well possible though, all you need to do is override neural impulses and there you go. Same goes for extremely powerful viral infections, I suppose. But in any case the victim needs to be alive when it gets zombified.

And all of this depends, of course, on how you define a zombie. For example, would a slimy, mindless, mutant made in a bioweapons program count as a zombie? Or does it have to be a walking corpse that rose from the grave?

see but the thing is i need SCIENCE! I need legit scientific reasons to argue against and disprove the side that thinks that zombies can exist. I need to present both sides of the question equally...
Then a fucking VIDEO GAME WEBSITE won´t do you any good, Mister.
If you need science, go to the nearest biology lab, and talk to a scientist.
There are likely no scientists here!

Also, un-dead is Impossible, once your brain took significant damage, revival is impossible.
The Brain is all that matters, if something like a parasite or a tumor or a virus blocks the self regeneration and breaks up concious thought to rely on primal instinct, It would be possible.
But these "Zombies" would look normal and just go into a rage over prolonged exposure, and only after enough time whould it look "Undead" because of it´s body rotting due to non-functioning self regeneration. But that would also mean it has a limited lifetime before the Body is so damaged, that it cannot function anymore.
And they could pretty much get killed by anything a normal human can be killed by...they probably just shrugg off bullets to the arms and legs due to lost pain recognation, but they won´t ever recover from it, and the bleeding won´t stop, so if it is so much as punctured, a "Zombie" of that kind would die within days, hours or minutes.
