Just got back from seeing it, and I am honestly surprised how much I fucking just loved it. Seriously, plus this movie does Star Wars, Star Trek, and even Superman better than Star Wars, Star Trek and Superman (the bad new ones).

Also yes, the movie about a hero made to appeal to feminists in the 70's tries (and I'd say succeeded) in appealing to feminists in Current Year.

I actually cried at the 'stands back up' scene.

Also loved that it was secretly also a Nick Fury movie, and basically a prequel to like, every other Marvel movie.

Anyways, MCU continues to be amazing to me. If you hate MCU well, its an MCU movie. I think if you liked Thor: Ragnarok, you will like this.

If you hate female empowerment though, you wont like the movie. ;P

Side note though, ugh, seeing the 90's so 'periodized' is really weird to me.

Well, they've got a good formula attached to a decent story and a massive amount of forward momentum.

The sideshow hilarity of weird nerds conspiring to review bomb it in plain sight is just icing on the cake.

My favorite is the dude that said, and I quote
If it [Captain Marvel] teaches women that they can be anything they want to be, specifically able to take on a 220 pound man in hand to hand combat and not get pummeled into the dirt, then it is a girl power movie and a cancer on our culture
Like, Captain Marvel literally has the standard suite of super powers. Super strength, speed, durability, flight, and energy absorption/projection. And this dude is mad that she can punch out a mook.

Black Panther and Ant Man and The Wasp were pretty dull and from what I'm hearing of Captain Marvel its just another generic Marvel movie. The "good" formula Marvel relies on is wearing thin and I'm not sure I'll bother seeing this in the cinema. If I do it'll be because nothing else is on and Avengers: Endgame will tie into it. Even that film I'm only really going to see to book end the last decade. I doubt I'm going to bother with Marvel after that.

It's a shame because I've been a Marvel fan all my life and I thought after Guardians, Thor: Ragnarok and Dr Stange they'd embrace the crazy side of their setting more and look to make films with a bit more of a unique feel to them. I feel like if they continue on this path their films numbers will drop after Endgame unless something big happens like they get the Fantastic Four or X-Men rights back.

Actually the movie literally says she cant without the powers. She fights Jude Law and can never beat him without the powers. She just eventually realizes she [doesn't have to prove anything to him]. The movie DID say to never stop getting up, no matter how many times you get knocked down though.

There are space aliens and a cat out of Men In Black. Watch the movie first maybe?

Can't say anything in the trailer made it look like anything other than another generic Marvel movie. Like with Black Panther I'm glad that a specific group that is underrepresented in these movies finally gets some representation, but that doesn't stop it from looking utterly bland. I'll just be over there waiting for Shazam and Brightburn.

My fifteen-year-old sister expressed interest in seeing this in the cinema, which surprised me as while she is a geek through-and-through, she's never really been into Marvel. An anecdotal example, perhaps, of how this film has the potential to reach out to new audiences.

No. I don't mean "why aren't there space aliens and a funny mascot" I mean there is no obvious distinct style or look to it. Thor: Ragnarok had a distinct style and look. Dr Strange had the trippy kaliedoscope look. Guardians went full comic scifi.

Captain Marvel looks "safe". Like the first few Marvel films when they weren't sure if the films would work so they didn't get too crazy so as not to alienate people and Thor was the most fantastic they were willing to get and even he was punted to Earth to have generic adventures.

Trailers spoil too much. I honestly had no idea Fury was going to be a main character in this, and honestly, maybe they are just learning from spoiling Hulk in Ragnarok.

But as I said, people who don't like MCU are probably never going to like MCU, so I really don't care if they still don't like MCU, cause MCU is why I even go to the movies most of the time.

I don't care about the movie but I want it to be succesful because of how annoying the people wanting it to flop are.

Y'know, I'm actually curious as to how that's going to turn out.

Like, any positive press for the film can be written off as "shills." But if the film makes big bucks (and projections say it will), how do you spin that? Brainwashing? Virtue signalling? I guess maybe "the film didn't make as much money as Disney would like" ala Last Jedi, but apart from that...

What sucks is that the film barely looks interesting enough to warrant such controversy, and as far as I can tell, none of the controversy stems from the film itself, but rather comments made by Brie Larson.

It doesn't make up for you thinking that empowering women is a negative though.
Somebody isn't going to go see the film --> they must be against empowering women. How nice of you to feed into that stereotype.

It's just Disney using the Us vs Them tactics that Sony invented for Ghostbusters to prop up a mediocre film.

It's nice that you'll just throw money at whatever mediocre crap gets shovelled towards you but I don't really want to reward Disney for making the least possible effort.

Oh please, you insinuated that is a criticism of the movie you have.

I think there are plenty of people who wont see it cause they just hate the MCU entirely. I dont think they are sexist.
