I HATE these things!

I understand some system like that is necessary, but sometimes I can't tell what the bloody text is saying, and in some sites if you fail you have to do the whole form again...

The system here at the Escapist has annoyed me so far, but not stopped me from actually posting, which it has done on some other sites.

And if you have a bad eyesight (like my best friend does) it's even worse. It's good Escapist has the option to listen to it, although I don't know well it works.

My friend can't read the texts, so he can't use several sites because of that, or he has to get someone else to help him.

No, just blind. His computer has programs that read the text and either turn it to audio or Braille he can read with his fingers using this http://www.nkl.fi/fi/etusivu/kuntoutus/atk/index.php?__file_display_id=4749

So anything designed so it can't be understood by bots he can't read either.

Thats my issues also, its so bloody hard to read... and if the system "helps" with scanned material, how does it know when I wrote the word wrong? if it already knew the words, why am I "helping"in the transcribing?

At least Umlats are easier to deal with than the asian char set. Just takes learning alt codes.

The Captcha system has its uses, but overall, I'm not a fan of it, simply because it doesn't always work as intended.

It doesn't matter that you can type anything at the unreadable ones. There are instructions there telling you to type the "two words", there should be 2 somewhat readable words there, not some captcha designers personal and unreadable joke. The Lost one is cool and usable, that I could take more of, the others are just a bother on top of an inconvenience.

Well not really, 4chan uses a Captcha system as well and one can't really call that place an ivory tower. Granted there is a sense of isolation with such procedures but at least it keeps out the spambots.

I'd like to hope its the LPC. That would end all spammers anyhow if they sign up to try and enlarge parts of your body or whatever. <3

Well not really, 4chan uses a Captcha system as well and one can't really call that place an ivory tower.

On a site that takes a stance against DRM, it's a little disheartening to see a similar form used on the site.

Especially one that makes it harder for legitimate users....oh we've been here before.

But pub/clubs are safe because they KNOW they're not bots. And we always promised to treat them no differently from non-pub/clubs.

Also, it totally doesn't block people with dyslexia, sight dysfunctions or others. In the same way it really hurts all those bots that are already around it.

That's why you write something and/or offensive instead of what's displayed for one of the words.

What is your opinion on the Captcha system here?

I don't hate it, but I don't like it either.

But luckily it has almost never appeared when I've posted. It always appears in a thread after I've posted.

I once got a Captcha that wanted me to type "Troll here". I thought it was hilarious and I did as it told me and trolled that site for a few hours.

On many occasions, Captcha's have lead to hilarity. Just today, going through the forums, I ran across this gem:

and this says "chang fang" or "zhang fang" which means "long house" or "growing house" (probably long house because that sounds less stupid).

both are written in old style Chinese, most commonly used by Taiwan.

You don't need to type the symbols. So if you get a weird Y, just type Y. Works for me. Fitting I get a captcha for this post.
