Is it just me or are some people using overrated as 'I didn't like the show but yet others do' instead of 'I think the show is of a lower quality then people claim it to be' I mena plenty of people love 'the room' but I am sure no one thinks its good so even if you don't like it and think its bad you can't call it overrated as people will agree its bad.
I agree with this post... well most people aren't explaining overrated as much as why they disliked something.

For stuff like Adventure Time, the best thing I hear people say is that it is stupid, funny and random. That's not exactly setting the bar high. I like it, I get the occasional chuckle, but I have no idea when it's on and wouldn't really care to find out.

Futurama being overrated I might give a yes to. I love it, I know others who love it, but it receives a lot of hype. "Godlike" was one description, so definitely overrated. As for it being a copy of the Simpsons in space, I'd really have to doubt if that person had even watched an episode at all. I mean the character design and some humor is the same, but the group dynamics and relationships between the characters are vastly different. Also quite a lot of the humor is more adult oriented, where as the simpsons is usually geared towards children (and nostalgic references).

Catdog? I've never heard anyone say anything nice about it, so how could it be overrated? lol.

Neo Genesis Evangelion - Sooo much this. I've been told to re-watch it like a million times because I didn't like it. Apparently liking Tsundere style characters is a large part of it...? But yeah... no... It's not as good as people thing.

Bleach/Naruto - both seem promising, receive a lot of praise but are spoiled by large amounts of filler. I read the manga for both and things are just so much more concise. Bleach suffers from pacing issues. Naruto, while I like character development I know that not everyone does.

Uhhh... Yeah Seth Mcfarlane, some people love it to death, but I don't think it lives up to their praise. I'd also like to mention "Ted" and how much praise it got when it was just such a boring and formulaic movie, even just outright copying Family Guy jokes.

I watch a lot of anime, so I'd like to give special mentions to...
Freezing - Called groundbreaking, but was essentially a generic ecchi superpower anime.

One Piece - Loved by many, I just didn't get it. I like the main character but was just meh about each ep I watched.

Highschool of the Dead - Called Amazing, but was essentially ecchi focused. The zombie invasion was an interesting idea for an anime at the time, but the execution was so much about the ecchi that it really spoilt the whole thing.

Maburaho - Roomate loved it, I wouldn't let him anywhere near my future children.

Adventure Time. Obviously to each their own, and the show doesnt bother me or anything, but I cannot see why people love it as much as they do. Aside from the nostalgic animation style, I don't see it.
The humor just seems random and spazzy - no real depth. The plots are just as sporadic, usually. A fine show, I suppose. But not great.

Don't know if I like the term "overrated" though. It's just a minority opinion.
I've always thought Adventure Time was about a blossoming friendship set against a strange post-apocalyptic world, more focused on character interactions and the way they overcome craziness than the craziness itself. I put it mentally next to The Simpsons and Futurama, not Ren & Stimpy or... I dunno, Regular Show? Its spazziness - the cartoony nature of it - is in service of very interesting character plots.

I could be digging too deep though. It might not actually be the show's intention, though it certainly wouldn't surprise me.

Frankly I'm going to cut out the middleman and just say ANY cartoon that suddenly explodes into popularity. Nothing, no matter HOW creative or original, stays fresh after it's been spammed at you by a horde of literally rabid fantards running the jokes into the ground and gushing breathlessly about how kickass it is and bullying anyone who criticizes it in the slightest.

Some of these bear repeating - My Little Pony. Skyrim and Portal put together shrivels in comparison to the staggering overrated-ness of something that's demonstrably targetted at pre-teen girls, and don't get me started on the cult-like behavior of the bronies. They're by definition furries, yet they ceaselessly deny it until they're blue in the face, then run around and deface other properties with ponies (like Pinkie Pie Shepard or whatever).

SpongeBob is a big fucking contender. I'm doubly offended because whoever is in charge of the Norwegian dubbing decided to ditch the original actor (I can't remember his name but he's kinda like Robin Atkin Downes - good with "psychotic" characters) in favor for the guy who played Aladdin (typecast in action roles). It's a rape to the ears to listen to.

The Simpsons/South Park/Family Guy - The unholy trinity of "comedy" that have all overstayed their welcome. I swear their current staff of writers are just trying to see what they can get away with now. Gone is the genuine comedy, "offensive humor" is apparently the trend now. Fuck these shows, I sincerely wish they were cancelled a decade ago.

Yeah, I hate to be that person again but MLP:FIM. I mean, I've watched the show. It's alright, I'll admit. But it's not THAT great. How could it have such a big fanbase AND how could guys like it so much? I'm not being sexist but it's just a mystery to me.

Also, Chowder. I had a lot of friends who loved the show and I just didn't get why. It felt like a Spongebob ripoff.

And I guess Spongebob too. I like Spongebob but I see it everywhere nowadays. The show is fun but there's only so much he can do in the show. His popularity is forcing the producers to come up with stupid episodes more often than necessary.

And...South Park and Family Guy. I dunno, they're both pretty childish and...gross? And I'm not saying I want to watch a show about bureaucrats drinking red wine all day and talking about taxes. But half of the time, the show spends its time making ass and shit jokes in order to hide its lack of a better plot. Hey, at least The Simpsons has managed to not sink to that level. So I don't get why everyone is so into those shows!
I guess it's more of a personal opinion.

And...not to play Devil's Advocate but Adventure Time is horribly overrated but it's still a good show. It's dumb and silly fun, yes, but there's a plot in there and that's something that most cartoons seem to forget about after a while. There are small hints here and there about something bigger: the Mushroom war, Marceline and Ice King, Peebles' age, Finn being the last human, etc. but that's just me.

Let me go ahead and drop my vote in for MLP:FiM.

Yes I love the show.

Yes it's the only show I have fanfics backed up for and write stories for. But IT isn't that good. The world they live in and the characters are interesting.

my brother loves MLP and tries to make me watch all episodes, i have watched a few episodes and a few funny moments, but i just cant invest in a story that's meant for young girls, i don't need the life lessons it teaches. the story is not relevant to me.

Having only seen a handful of episodes, my personal vote goes to Adventure Time, with the first runner up of DragonBall Z. I don't like most of the former, with the exception being some snazzy characters, and I honestly don't understand the appeal of the latter.

Any anime that most people recommend to me is a sour point for me. Case in point: Sword Art Online. I hate Sword Art Online. Now Kirito, stop being inconsistent. Asuna, stop being cliched. The list goes on...

South Park. It has the occasional entertaining episode, but it?s much less intelligent than the creators think it is. I mean, it?s tolerable, and I?ll watch it if there?s nothing else to, but?it?s not as good as The Simpsons, or even Family Guy. I mean, I ?get it?, but there?s not all that much humour to be found in the increasingly ridiculous storylines.

Naruto. All I can remember from the couple of manga volumes my friend lent to me was an annoying smart-ass protagonist, an emo sidekick-of-sorts, a stereotypical tsundere teenage girl with a stupid crush on said emo, and about a million flashbacks.

Seconding Teen Titans. Not only does the theme song annoy the absolute fuck out of me, but it was made during that period when American cartoons were ripping off anime. Except that rather than taking what was good, such as interesting character dynamics or arcing storylines, they took the stuff that makes anime shit. Mainly the ridiculous overreaction faces, random graphical effects and emphasis lines that completely draw you out of the show.

It also doesn't fit with the DC animated universe shows, which I find much superior. Hell, even Static Shock, with it's rather lame music and less than threatening villains was a better show. At least in it Harley Quinn showed up once.
Static Shock was a show that tackled some real-world issues.

No, it's not just you. That's how threads like this about books/music/movies/games/comics/television always go around here.

OT: New Spongebob.

Now, to be fair, I haven't really seen anybody talk about Spongebob in a long while, but it's still going strong so somebody has to think it's good. To me, though, ever since the film was made the characters have progressively gotten more flat and the jokes have been increasingly simplified. The first few seasons of Spongebob are littered with subtext and small, subtle jokes, which is something that seems to have been completely thrown out the window now.
YES. spongebob if you have seen the newer episodes is only still being artificially alive due to the fact that it's nicks biggest franchise and cant let go of it. they only crank out like maybe 10 episodes a year (just a guess no real proof for this number), and with most of the new episodes its just the same basic problem from a previus one with a new reason why said problem is happening and new unfunny jokes, it slaps you in the face with staleness

Naruto does tend to grow stale after awhile, and it does suffer from some anime stereotypes that hold it back. However, when the series does something right, it does shine. There are moments from that series that still resonate with me (deaths of prominent characters, convictions and ideologies, and the "Balboa Syndrome")

I am not overrated, thank you very much.
So, you pretty much got mad enough to RP as said character whose show I don't like? Wow. Keep being mad, bro.
Barton, it was a joke.
Hard to tell when certain fans of fandoms are joking when most of them I come across are rabid and do actually get mad about it. Of course, I apologize for not realizing it was a joke.

I'll agree Teen Titans is overrated. Good show, but not THAT good.

Spongebob - it's kinda of just dumb.

Invader Zim - it's okay.

Tom & Jerry - Like Roadrunner cartoons...except boring.

Southpark - When it's good, it's REALLY good....but most of the time it's actually just annoying.

Family Guy - Fairly good across the board, and occasionally really great, but still nowhere near as good as people seem to think.

The Simpsons - Good, but just waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay beyond its expiration date. It's just pointless now.

Transformers (kinda all of them) - I fucking LOVE Transformers (in the sense of characters, concepts, designs, story, etc) but the shows have never lived up to their potential.
-----------

-----------

-----------
Avatar:The Legend Of Korra - NOT overrated. The first season had room to be a LOT better if Amon's identity was different, but (disregarding that I had come up with a far better conclusion) it was nonetheless FANTASTIC. It is COMPLETELY on track to be better than The Legend Of Aang in the coming seasons. The Last Airbender wasn't at its best in the first season either.

Young Justice - A hell of a lot better than every other DC cartoon ever made that wasn't part of the DCAU, and actually much better than MOST of the DCAU. Young Justice is outright one of the best superhero cartoons ever made.

Ultimate Spider-Man - It's actually a really good show. You just have to accept that it's the first cartoon to take on Spider-Man as an impetuous teenager (more self-obsessed and focused on having fun) than the more serious and responsible versions of Spider-Man from Spider-Man TAS, Spectactular Spider-Man, Spider-Man TNAS, Spider-Man Unlimited, etc, etc.
He hasn't yet learned to be a responsible hero, and the full weight of what his responsibilities actually are haven't fully settled in his mind yet.
He's getting there though....slowly.

My Little Pony:Friendship Is Magic - It's not overrated. It really is a GREAT show. BUT...it's simply not for everyone, as a lot of the most avid fans would like to believe.
I love the show, but I recognize that it simply doesn't mesh with some people.

Now, I'm going to throw you all a curveball:

MLP:FIM.

Now, just wait a minute. Yes, I love that show, but "overrated" does not mean bad. It just means that it gets far too much attention. Overall, I don't think it is overrated, it's just some of the more vocal fans tend to push it so much, that it makes me think if I just heard about the show from some of those fans today, I would be sorely disappointed when I finally watched the show.

That's what "overrated" should be, not just talking about something you don't like.
I second this answer. I've actually enjoyed the show much more now because I've lowered my standards of it to that of any other cartoon (like, for example, Spongebob). That way, I can always enjoy at it's standard level, and when it ramps up for the big finales/premieres, I enjoy it even more than I would have.

I get why it's New Sincerity message can have a profound effect on people, but I think if bronies toned down how "awesome" and "epic" the show was, newcomers wouldn't feel so disappointed on their first experience (especially with the first 2 episodes being nigh-exclusively for kids).

Oh yes, because we can all be relied upon to be objective arbiters of quality...

Give me a break and let me like something because it appeals to me; don't call me an idiot for liking Adventure Time because I find it fun, don't call me a **** for liking Aqua Teen Hunger Force because (actually I can't really isolate why I do like ATHF, but I do).

All this 'overrated' crap is bullshit, and down to annoying people rather than the shows themselves.
