I'll have to crack them into a cross, because last time I did that Resident Evil stomped them into the dirt.

And Konami is excited because of the money truck that just pulled up outside the offices. I'll hold my tongue because it seems promising, and it does seem like they are on the right track, but the last film that came out of development hell was DragonBall: Evolution. Just thought I'd put that out. That, and I've never seen a good videogame movie. Ever.
That's because gamers hold standards to ridiculous levels. I'm not gonna say that all video game movies have been great, but there have been a couple good ones. The problem with video game movies is less that they aren't good, and more that if they aren't the most fantastic movie you'll ever see in 10 lifetimes, then the gamers will rip it to shreds and label it as shit... even if it was a decent movie regardless.

Personally, I liked Spirits Within, and the Tomb Raider movie wasn't terrible (though the second one was), and the first Resident Evil was also fairly good (though like Tomb Raider, the rest weren't). I would also argue that the Street Fighter movie from the 90s wasn't bad when you consider that it was supposed to be campy. It takes a certain sense of humor to be able to enjoy it, I'll admit, but it was a good movie when you aren't trying to take it seriously (edit: Though, again, the second Street Fighter movie just recently was horrible... so frankly, I won't be worried until they announce a second Castlevania, because sequels to video game movies certainly aren't on a good track record).

The first Saw movie was actually of quality, and the second to some extent.

Let's hope he can channel that into Fantasy, and we're in the black.

Well, the animated Street fighter films were okay, especially when you consider that the source material is "racially diverse cast fights for some reason." As cheesey as they are, I compare them favorably to any other videogame film I've seen, ever. As long as Wan keeps in mind what makes Castlevania a good series, it shouldn't be horrible.

Also, the live action SF movie had that one good line where the villians are watching the security monitor as the truck gets closer and closer, and then Zahngeif shouts, "Quick, change the channel." That doesn't excuse anything else in the movie, but that one line was hilarious.
That single line was Gold, the only good thing about that entire film, but it had me in stitches.

Also animated movies don't count, they were all pretty good except for SFIV, which was just horrendous, and one of the worst animated movies I've seen in a while. I'm talking live action. The Legend of Chun Li showed that Hollywood just doesn't get it for the most part, and is fine with butchering mythos'. Some people try to give me crap about a 'fresh reboot' when fresh reboots aren't wanted, why the hell would it be wanted when your favourite game/anime/media is being made for the big screen? You want everything that was great about it in motion, not Irish M.Bison and RPG wielding balrog, or high school Goku, or any other crap.

That being said, this one sounds a lot more promising when compared to those abominations, but you know what they say, 51st time bitten...
Glad to see someone else shares my sense of humor.

"Fresh reboots" usually mean that the director has no clue what makes something popular and it's something to point back at when people say that it shares none of the attraction of the original material. Wan seems to have identified at least one aspect of what people like about the franchise, so, hopefullu, we will get something worth at least watching.

GASP! A serious attempt is being made at this? Well, will wonders never cease.

I honestly want more video game movies, because they're totally feasible. Just because the films of the past have been terrible doesn't mean that videogame movies aren't possible... and even if the producers screw up and make a terible flick, we all get to swarm them with our hatred. It's sort of a win-win situation in my eyes: if they do well/mediocre, we get a decent flick to watch. If they do it poorly, we get to scream a lot and write negative reviews. This can apply to all film adaptations, regardless of the medium being adapted.

Then again, I'm looking at this as a reviewer. I enjoy bad things when they come out because they let me unleash my inner fury.

The fandoms of the things being adapted might not be so pleased.
I agree with this statement completely. Given that only a few videogame movies are decent, and the majority are terrible, doesn't mean they shouldn't keep trying. Sure, it's fun to make fun of them and hate them, but, like any other entertainment medium/genre, it takes time to mature and develop into something that's actually of viable quality. That's why I'm being cautiously optimistic about the Warcraft adaptation.

After all, ten years ago, who would've thought that a comic-book movie could win an Oscar?

That being said, I have never played a Castlevania game, nor have I seen any of the Saw movies (save for the last five minutes of the first), so I can't judge whether there is much to look forward in this project or not.

Spirits Within is a fine film, but a terrible Final Fantasy film. That actually had no reason to hold the FF label besides the fact that it was done by Square Studios. Tomb Raider was decent enough to be honest, but most people don't tend to count it.

It's not just gamers, it's anyone who holds their source material dear to them. The fact is that studios butcher the mythos because they know that they will get fans of the original works in the cinema by name alone, now they are tweaking it to cater to the whims of average moviegoers. Look and DB: Evolution and tell me that the fans are wrong to voice their disdain for that vat of waste.

Same with Resident Evil, same with a lot of other works. The only reason they are calling it an adaptation is because of the extra couple million that it will rake in as a result of calling the name and making passing references to the original (Nemesis, Zombie Dogs, etc from Resident Evil).

The only one who got it right was Zak Snyder, and he got it wrong because he chose the wrong film to stay panel-to-panel faithful with.

I like this guy. At least he knows the whips name.

I think if you cut out the white haired pretty boys the rest would be fine.
re-read article, he's interested because of the pretty boy concept. Only thing slightly bothering me is the possible inclusion of a katana. now I don't really know my Castlevania but i'm sure no one ever used a Katana ever. but so long as it's there to attract the non-vania fans (the ones who would be like "What kind of weapon is a whip" and the whip is still the primary weapons then aces.

What do you think will be done with magic though? left out, or some really nice special effects.
Holy Water FTW. That is all.

Well okay, maybe it's not all. I like your Katana theory, but I can't help but be rather pessimistic and think that it might be the beginning of the end. We shall see.

I'm curious about this film. There are certain things about the games that, other than the gameplay, give them that distinct Castlevania feel for me such as the gothic atmosphere and especially the excellent music of each game. I hope that if nothing else they can integrate these elements (again especially the soundtrack) in to the film. As for story, well Castlevania hasn't really been known for being story driven and most often the story is just a second thought though some like Symphony and Aria were at least interesting if not enjoyable. So we'll see, personally I'm more interested in the Lords of Shadow than any film of the series.

Nay, you have it wrong friend! His madman lines at the end were gold. But this sums it up nicely for me:

I'm just throwing this out there that the reason they haven't succeeded with a Street Fighter Live Action movie (I mean besides just being bad movies) is that they never focus on a character someone cares about. Chun-Li and Guile are not the most charismatic characters that we would go see a movie about them for anything other than sex appeal or nerdiness (I'll let you choose which is which)

I mean the FACE of the fighting genre hasn't appeared in a movie, neither has Ken, or Akuma unless I missed something. Not to mention in the end all we really want too see is a live action rendition of Ryu fighting in the first street fighter tournament and then splitting Sagat's chest open with a Shoryuken. Is this too hard a concept for film makers to grasp? Ryu goes to tournament, cast of colorful characters brawl, Ryu does the Shoryuken and throws a Hadouken here or there.

THAT'S IT! How is this so hard to accomplish! I swear every time with a fighting movie this is what happens, I am to understand the Tekken movie is at least keeping the idea that "Winner gets the Mishima Zaibatsu" in ploy but they did... something to Jin thats apparently screwed him up, I dunno but it can't be as bad as Dragonball Evolution.
I see what you did there. Fair enough I'll say to that, but just so you know I'm an irrational Ken Masters fanboy, and in my world Ryu is a supporting character and nothing more.

Ryu and Ken were in the movie though, they started off as criminals then joined shadoloo for power and fortune, only to reform later. God I hat that film! I'm going to stop now lest there be 4 paragraphs of hate...

THEY MADE E.HONDA HAWAIIAN! I DON'T EVEN LIKE HIM, BUT THEY MADE HIM HAWAIIAN. FOR FUCK'S SAKE!

I mean as who they really are, bad ass martial artists who beat people up, not side characters for fucking GUILE. Who the hell cares about Guile I mean REALLY!
My. Thoughts. Exactly. But Guile is American, that probably explains everything. In retrospect I couldn't understand why Guild would be the protagonist for any other reason, so that's what helps me sleep at night. For fuck's sake I would have rather had Dhalsim as the protagonist!

It just becomes face smashing retarded when you realize that DAN has more importance to the plot of Street Fighter than Guile, hell i'm lucky that I only know about the movie from people telling me about it, but IIRC they had the street fighter cartoon before it which had Guile as the main character too, working for the government and the group of fighters were codenamed Street Fighters.

Again I haven't see this cartoon series but apparently Guile was bigger than everyone else (Probably SOLELY for being American) I mean SHIT Blanka had a more compelling backstory
IMHO, if Chun-Li is Interpol, SHE should be more important than everyone, let's be real. The only positives I can garner from all of this is that they got off of Ryu's dick for once, but Guile? Really? Oy...

Just give me a movie where Ken owns someone with a 10 hit combo followed by a well placed Shinryuken, and I'll be smiling like a Cheshire cat.

I'm happy to hear that it's back from the dead, but I'm still not going to get pumped up for it because it's still a video game movie and I'm sure you all know how hit or miss those tend to be.
