My cat was pretty smart. He figured out how doors with handles work, and to look both ways before crossing the street. My cat seemed to be destined for a long life span, but then a MOTHER FUCKING COUGAR came out of nowhere and ate him!!!
Well, it is a dog eat dog world out there, or should that be cat eat cat!
OHOHOHOHOHOHOHOHO, Me so witty!

Yes, Cats are fucking dumb as hell. Dogs do dumb shit too, but generally only as puppies. Cats will continue to chase laser pointers forever. Cats are entertaining because they're stupid. They don't really have any other use other than entertainment in a modern, mouse free house.

I'm a dog person, all the way. I like my possessions, a pet is just a glorified possession, to have a use. Every dog I've had has, at least, been an early warning alarm for anyone coming home, if not an actual guard dog.
Dogs kill small children. Cats do not.
wow thats such an overgeneralization of dogs
also
pets are pets, not objects

They're stupid, compared to humans. But they're evil and use what intelligence they have for plotting how to get what they want. Personally, I would never want a pet, and if I had to get one, a cat would be at the bottom of the list.

As with all animals (including humans), cats are as intelligent they need to be to survive. Considering generations of domestications has "lowered the bar" for the mental capacity needed for cats to survive, then it's easy to see how this is misunderstood (But it's not like our family constantly claims that our cat is: "not the brightest/dumb/stupid". not even we, who know better can help ourselves to pass judgement on these cute little creatures)

...I take it you don't live in a place with many bobcats or cougars...

On topic: yes. Cats are generally terrible at problem solving, and even the clever ones only tend to learn escape artist tricks. My cat is a particularly clever hunter, but he still can't seem to wrap his head around the "don't piss in the house" concept. Yes, he's a predominately outdoor cat.

I've generally had better luck with smart dogs throughout my life... but most of those have been labradors or guard breeds such as rottweilers...
my current dog is a half-breed coon hound/blood hound, though... and she's dumb as a rock. Makes my cat look like a goddamn genius. Still, she has a loud howl, and she'll direct it at anyone she doesn't know, so she's a great alarm system.

I'd say the biggest reason people have stupid or violent pets is due to a lack of care taken by the owner. I firmly believe that no one who lives in a place smaller than a suburban house with a fair-sized yard should own a pet that doesn't live in an aquarium.

Never owned a cat, so I can't say anything about them, but that video was adorable. Reminds me very much of my dogs, to be honest.

Love the stereotypes that surround pets more than anything else. Love my pets rats to death, I have had rats in my life for 10 years now. Love the false information people have about domesticated pet rats.
I am looking into getting some pet rats at some point. Currently have 2 dogs though (terriers, specifically) so I can only see that causing problems. They are cute though.

Bad owners are to blame, not dogs.

Cats are bastards, and we love them for it.

Except for ginger toms, they're a cut above, and if you share a mindset, it makes for some serious camaraderie.

Stupid is a relative term. Simplified you could call it being less intelligent than the norm.

Cats aren't stupid. Look at the world as a whole. Most species are far inferior to cats in terms of intellect.
It's not all the animals who are stupid, it's us humans who are exceptionally intelligent.

And I use the term 'us humans' loosely, I've certainly met people who are less intelligent than a cat. Sure, they can speak, but that doesn't make them intelligent.

Of course they are. All pets are stupid; that's part of the reason why we have them. If they were sentient, they'd be people, not pets.
...All animals are sentient. But I think I understand what you meant.
He meant sapient!
:3.

Also, I think cats are dumb.
I also think that too many people talk about their cats too much.
I don't care about your cat, or how it's being needy right now.

I'm pretty discouraged by the vast amount of ignorance, generalizations and plain stupidity in this thread.

They aren't stupid, they're animals. I subscribe to the school of thought that all sentient lifeforms are pretty much programmed via their experiences (sort of like the most advanced computer you can think of), thus nothing is actually stupid.

Yes, they're all stupid by nature.
And Ducks are trying to kill me.
And Americans are fat, warmongering ignorami.

To what comparison are we calling them stupid?
Compared to humans? Just becuase we don't understand cats and they don't build things whilst we're out of the house, doesn't mean they're stupid.

Someone once told me dolphins aren't so great, since they haven't built things or tools to help them. You try building things without thumbs.
What about people born with 5 fingers on each hand, a finger where each thumb normally would/should have been.

Those people are able to build things, I've met someone who has 10 fingers, and she is able to build things.
Well, fingers are still long enough to curl around stuff. Animals don't even have that. Even if they did, they wouldn't have many tools to work with that would suit them. A dolphin would have like...rocks to work with.

It's more of a matter of misunderstanding than being stupid. The reason bees and birds bump into windows is probably because they have trouble comprehending them and become confused when confronted with this reality. As for the whole laser pointer thing cats will probably chase the pointer fully aware that they can ever actually grab onto it just so that they can practise hunting.

I've often thought cats were playing a sneaky double bluff. It's like, what do they do all day? Nothing. What do they give back? Little. But they get fed by us, they get their poop cleaned by us. They get looked after by us and they live in our warm houses. Maybe it is we who are stupid? After all, we're basically their slaves.

...but then they start chewing on furniture and roll around on the carpet with a soft toy and my opinion of them crashes down. Fuck, what a bunch of morons.

Don't let them fool you.

They're just pretending to be stupid to make us put our guards down. And once we do...

BAM!

All of humanity falls before the glorious feline overlords and is put to work as slaves in the yarn factories.

More colourful balls of yarn for the masters to play with and/or get tangled up in! More, I say!

Nah cats aren't that dumb. But they are animals and animals are just generally stupid. But in comparison to other animals, no. My cats can all open doors. They understand that pulling the handle down opens up the doorway. That's intelligence. For an animal at least :p
