As many of you know, a lot of people had problems with the witcher 2 on realse, because of DRM, well just under a week after release CD Projekt RED decided to remove the DRM for all the right reasons, I wish more devs would follow this and understand.

all i have to say is bravo CD Projekt RED, bravo!
Discuss, whether or not you think this should be the right course of action on all future PC games

Of course. These guys don't just see PC gamers as wallets; they see us as PC gamers. It's stuff like this that make me hate the people putting in intrusive DRM that does nothing short of punish legitimate customers.

How the hell can I possibly mimic this captcha?

The GoG version had no DRM, the retail had a single disc check with SecuRom; it seems that CDP didn't even like that and so they removed it

Retail version still had DRM. OT: Pretty damn sweet news. These guys are so ahead of the curve it's not even funny.

I can't decide if CDprojekt are just behind on the news and doing things the old fashioned way ..you know aiming to please the costumers(gamers).

Or just ahead of the rest of the companies and realising that more and more gamers are feed up being treated like shit by the greedy bean counters.

Well The Witcher 1 was one of those games that was notorious for having been purchased multiple times by the same people.
Just by CDPR not being assholes.

There's actually profit to be made from not treating customers like criminals.

Taking myself as an example, I buy a lot of games a year.
Some years, this number is in the hundreds.
However, since Ubisoft DRM is so freakin' annoying, I'll only buy Ubisoft games that are really impressive, such as a few assassin's creed titles, rather than everything.

They definetely have my respect that is for sure, but I'm not one to throw around arbitrary titles of "best/worst" dev ever and such. Every developer has their good and bad games and such, but so far CDP have done nothing but good in my eyes by releasing 2 of my favorite RPGs hands down.

The only thing I can say bad about CDPR is that they did get my hopes back a while ago with Witcher Rise of the White Wolf. That is probably one of the reasons why they haven't made an official announcement for Witcher 2 to be consoles or not. they don't want to repeat the same mistake...

With the power of ponies!

OT:

I thought it was a good (perhaps, even a well calculated) move as it should inspire consumer trust in the developers.

Hm, I do really appreciate their approach. Minimal DRM, providing a way to bypass regional crap... good stuff. Also, it seems clear to me that they have a certain passion for the business. One gets the impression that they genuinely want to make good game.

However, at the end of the day, I don't think their games are that great. CD Projekt have a long way to go before I start rating them alongside the likes of Valve and Bioware.

Witcher 2 isn't bad though, so there's still hope.

It's not just "didn't like that", the SecuROM version they used was quite a resource hog. Removing it improves performance by up to 30%, according to the patch notes.

I know that, I was just giving the bare bones of it, as an owner of that version I know how much the DRM affected the game

They noticed how DRM hurts the game's performance. Imagine how much better other PC games would run without DRM then, especially console ports. It hurts to even think about it.

I appreciate the DRM nod, for sure, but their game are not the greatest games ever. I'm currently playing W2 right now and while I think it is painfully brilliant the technical quabbles I have with the game are a little frustrating. Not offputting though.

If I remember correctly, the guys who run Good old Games are drinkin' buddies with the leads of CD Projekt, which is why Witcher 2 got a day 1 release with them. One would think that they'd have similar outlooks on how to treat their customers. (And GOG has the most WTF-seriously-are-you-jesus trust in their customers I have seen from any distributor ever.) They are the kind of guys I think I would gladly buy a round for down the pub.

Best dev though? Ehhhh, obviously they didn't learn much from Witcher 1, control issues are still there, minimal QA from first-look playthrough, severe lack of documentation on essential mechanics and lots of redundancies due to archaic RPG conventions. They make a good park but it's kinda hard to play in it.

What DRM and why would anyone buy TW2 through anyone else but GOG?

GOG version gets more extras and/or is cheaper depending on your location and ofcourse no DRM.

CDPR has created a couple PHENOMENAL games. Still, I can't bestow upon them the title of greatest developer ever just because it has only been a couple games. And regardless of their quality, quality + quantity beats quality every time. Which is why I'd have to say the greatest dev ever is a three-way tie between Valve, Blizzard, and Nintendo.
Valve? Its not like they have a bazillion games in their catalogue either :p

One word (usually the clear one) is a paid word. There are companies translating books and other texts into a comprehensible format. One word is a real captcha (the blurry one) and the other is just $$ for the escapist. This allowes them to get hundreds of thousands of words translated "unknowingly" by everyday internet users. I always put "******" there as I don't like being used as a cheap labor WITHOUT my consent.
