Good point. I never really thought about that. My parents used to be a bit dodgy about me playing games, especially my dad was always telling me to get outside. But now, since I've become good friends with another gamer and attended a couple of tournaments they're fine about it. They let me game in peace. They don't really understand it, but they let me get on with it. I should really be more grateful for that.
If only my brother was the same. Of course, he only doesn't let me play in peace because he always wants to play Guitar Hero.

Lucky people. Whenever anybody I live with comes in they will ***** and whine for me to stop playing. Gets quite annoying really. Even when I refuse they will sit next to me annoying me until I just turn it off.
That's what spurred me into saving up my pennies and buying my own awesome TV and sound system. I could lock myself away and immerse myself in gaming, without anyone bothering me, unless the house was shaking due to bass. After seeing the lengths I'd go to feed my addiction and create the perfect gaming experience, added to the fact that I'm employed and not living form paycheque to paycheque, they finally learned to live with it.

Also, when I bought my awesome TV, I also bought my mum a less awesome, but still pretty special TV. That kinda shut her up.

The moral of this story is, the best way to shut people up is expensive gifts.

I think my family tolerate my game playing in the same way I tolerate their watching the TV at 2am with the sound on full, or vaccuuming at 6am.

In other words, not very.

They've learned that nothing short of a crowbar gets me off if I don't want to be moved, so they just call me 'anti-social'. I can live with that.

my house mates are pretty good. none of them play much (they have had the odd go in the while growing up but it hasn't gone further than that) but they know i do play more than they do and they let me get on with it. a couple of times they have joined in and its been great fun

My parents use to bug me about gaming, saying it was a waste of time. Then I won $500 in a smash bros. tournament, they tend to bother me less now. (unless I'm playing rock Band really loud)
Seriously. Winning anything at any tournament really helps get everyone off your case. Just find a local gaming haven and try to convince them to host a tournament.

My parents, having been persuaded to actually attempt to play games before they pass judgment, now make sharp distinctions between "good" and "bad" categories of games. Talking loudly on Ventrilo instead of going to class? Bad. Having friends over for a little System Link action? Good. Desktop Tower Defense? Guilty pleasure.

When I purchased my copy of Oblivion, the GameStop salesman suggested I pick up the strategy guide as well, because the world was so large and complicated. It didn't help that my friend was there with me, had played it all before and has no concept of saving money. Basically it was a tag team. So, there I was spending forty bucks on a game with another forty for the damned guide. And I did buy it, which I've always regretted. Yes, maps are helpful, but then again, maps are included in the game...

And they overlooked the existence of Mr. Internet.

When I played Fallout 3 I did so without a strategy guide, except for the occasional foray onto the internet to check how to do something that I didn't want potentially screwing my game up for the long term. At that time, the Internet didn't have very much information, because the game was brand new. And I have to say, I'm glad that was so. It definitely made me enjoy my experience with the game a whole lot more. A lot more than my experience with Oblivion.

As to the case in hand, a woman totally anti-gaming refusing to buy it in order to not facilitate her husband's gaming, well, what the hell is she doing buying him Fallout 3? She ought to get him Scrabble or Monopoly or something like that that he'll get bored of after two days.

My girlfriend actually encourages me to play videogames, since she knows I'd rather spend time with her, and most of the time if she asks me to stop so we can do something, I will.

I live on my own and I support my gaming habits with my own money ... However in the past my parents have always been pretty cool with me playing games, but then again my "addiction" only kicked in when I could afford it myself.

About girlfriends none of my previous was really positive about it, including one I lived with for 3 years who made an effort to be ok with it, but it always proved to be against her nature to allow me to enjoy games in peace ...

I still long for the gamer girlfriend :(

My girlfriend is pretty good about games. She really doesn't like playing them (though I can get her to play Rock Band after a few drinks), but she likes watching them if there's a good story going on and she likes giving me suggestions on what to do. I don't think she's ever complained about me playing so I guess that makes me lucky.

Watching me play Resident Evil 4 scared the hell out of her. If a villager started to get close to me, she would yell, "SHOTGUN! SHOTGUN!" Good times :)

There are people who don't want others to be happy. They just want constant attention. Luckily my boyfriend is as bad as me. He just hints that he'd quite like some attention, every now and then.

If your computer has speakers, just put on some music they wouldn't like. Even if you hate it to, it's worth it to not deal with them.

My friend's girlfriend's father used to play a lot of games and somehow she associated the sound and visual as being a relaxant. Now, whenever she is stressed or sad, she asks him to play Call of Duty 4. I wish some day I find a super hot girl friend who lets me relax her by shooting nazis...some dudes have all the luck...

I married a girl who's not just a gamer but a World of Warcraft player. The net effect is that I get to enjoy my singleplayer games in peace since her favorite thing to do after dinner is shut herself in her gaming sanctuary (we separated our computers because her Vent chat drove me insane) and work on her character and my favorite thing is to fire up my game-of-the-moment and tinker with it for that same time frame.

I'm lucky to be able to play games in peace in less it's online where it's not family that bugs me it's other players who find it fun to not play the game but just screw with others

Amen, Susan.

But let's all remember to return the favour: I sit and watch trashy TV with my girlfriend (often with a DS) because that's what she enjoys. It's all entertainment, it's all good.

Using a strategy guide, especially on these types of open games, just takes things one more step towards the "I know this game like the back of my hand now and never want to play it again" phase.
I don't know, I'm just not sure why people would want to dilute the coveted first play through experience. The play through where things can actually surprise you and there are still discoveries to be made.

Oh well.
