You seem to be assuming that once one owns the guide, one follows it with slavish devotion. And some folks do, certainly. I don't know, I'm just not sure why people would want to dilute the coveted first play through experience. The play through where things can actually surprise you and there are still discoveries to be made.

I, for example, have a really hard time finding my way around. (I have this problem in real life, too. Something in my brain just doesn't process direction very well.) So for me, it's helpful to have a physical map that I can lay out in front of me and refer to. Granted, for a game like Fallout 3, it's a bit tricky, as you don't want to learn about locations unnaturally, but having the guide can still be a big help.
