Zack from Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core. I really liked him in that game.

Also John Marston from Red Dead Redemption. The ending of that game was a real boot in the balls.

I tried really hard to shoot that son of a ***** Edgar Ross during the last scene where you're gunned down.

I seem to like arrogant douchebags when I play games. I would never hang out with them in real life, but they are just written so well.

A list of the characters I like:
Ethan Thomas (Condemned 2 version)
John Marston (the only non-arrogant character I like, and I would so hang out with Mr. Marston)
Travis Touchdown
Garcia Hotspur
Augustus Sinclair Esq. (that Georgian accent makes it impossible for anyone to hate him.)

I really liked Leen from Grandia. A tragic and flawed character, but she is awesome nonetheless. And hella cute, too.

I tried to do the exact same thing, hoping, PRAYING that it might change the outcome. Nope.

And as far as favourite characters go, I'd have to say mine is Mr. Marston as well. His story is a sad one, indeed...

First of all of course Agro and Yorda, those were the characters I cared the most about, especially Yorda. Hardly anyone comes even close.

The ME2 crew deserves a mention as well. I remember becoming more and more attached to them over the course of the game, especially because of their personal missions.


edit: I'm the first to mention Yorda? I'm disappoint, Escapist.

I really didn't like Cole too much in the first game, he was too bland and grumpy. In the second though, they really did make you care about him, especially the scene near the end with him simply hanging out with Zeke, which I think really helped the ending.
Cole was alright, but Zeke ended up being, to me, one of the best characters in gaming of all time. Regardless of what morality Cole is, Zeke is an awesome buddy character and I really liked him by the time the game was over. Plus, even when the situation calls for him to be serious, Zeke stays the same character. A lot of times in games (or any type of written media for that matter) characters will kick into melodrama mode, where almost all their characteristics are thrown out the window and all of their dialog could fit any character with same objective regardless of personality. Almost everything Zeke says or does either enforces his character or reveals more about him.

There's a point where Zeke has the ray sphere, which Cole needs to destroy and Zeke needs to live. At this point there's no corny "you betrayed me!" or "I wish it didn't have to come to this!" bullshit. Zeke doesn't try to convince Cole that he's wrong. He doesn't angrily curse him for being such a selfish prick. All he says before trying in vain to stop Cole is "You know I gotta try." That's it. That one line in that context expresses so much about the character. He knows that Cole's made up his mind, and he knows Cole fully understands the situation so he knows there's no point in trying to spell it out for him or convince him to change his mind. He doesn't want to shoot his friend, and he knows it's not going to work, but he wants to at least go out like a man rather than just giving Cole the ray sphere and dieing later anyways. Even the way he phrases it "You know I gotta try" as if to say "we both know what's going to happen here, so let's just get it over with" speaks volumes about the character's personality.

Having to put him down was by far the closest I've ever come to crying from a game.

I've always had a fondness for Vanille and Hope from Final Fantasy XIII. Vanille because she's sweet and innocent, despite being horribly broken, and Hope, because we basically are the same (IE: Whiny, bored 14 year old.)

Rose of Sharon Cassidy from New Vegas.

While I think the rest of the game was rubbish, I loved what they did with the companions. I took all of them on their 'self-discovery' quests, and enjoyed the hell out of getting to know the developing characters, but Cass was easily my favorite.

Her story was genuinely sympathetic, and even after it I enjoyed her company. Almost every location came with a little commentary, she yelled at me for taking drugs due to her inherited heart problem, and her entire conversational repertoire was interesting.

That, and her total psychopathic nature is actually balanced with mercy and doing the right thing. I gave her the unique Hunting Shotgun and enjoyed watching her obliterate anything that dared stand in our way.

I don't play New Vegas anymore because I simply have more fun in Fallout3, and the DLC's are shit, and I miss the companions, especially Cass. That's what you'd call exceptional character design.

Too bad the rest of the game was a joke.

Captain Price, all the way from Call of Duty 2, Master Chief from Halo and My Warden and My Hawke from the Dragon Age series, for some odd timespace continium they are the same person (atleast thats how i like to imagine it)

From games, probably Wheatly from Portal 2 up until a certain point. . . sniff*

But from anything I'd have to say Scott Pilgrim, I can really get behind his character arc through the series.

For some reason, I became attached to Vincent from Final Fantasy VII without having met him in VII and without having played much of Dirge of Cerberus. I think this is due to my imagined relationship between Vincent and Lucrecia, and the sense of loss I perceive.

I don't know if I would say "most" attached to, but one stand-out attachment for me would be Alyx Vance from Half-Life 2.

She's the first video game woman that I would consider truly "attractive," and let me explain that. Yes, there are plenty of video game women that I could quality as "hot," but true attraction for me (and I would hope for most people) is a combination of respecting and appreciating a person's physical beauty, personality, and capabilities.

With her realistically-proportioned good looks, friendly and encouraging but down-to-earth personality, and her ability to take care of herself and others, I found myself genuinely caring about Alyx as the game progressed. I worried about her when bad things could happen to her, and I missed her when she wasn't around.

When her father makes a comment about her and I (I being in the role of the blank slate Gordan Freeman) propagating the human race, I realized that the thought of having and raising children with her sounded like a considerably good idea.

Alyx Vance is the fist and ONLY video game character that I can honestly say this about: If she were real and I were single, I would want her to be my girlfriend and I would be open to the possibility of marrying her and having children with her.
