Definitely my Commander Shepard. Whenever I see trailers featuring the default face or any of my friends versions, I can't help but think 'that's not Shepard. My Shepard is the real Shepard'. That says a lot about Bioware being able to create and let the player create rich and interesting worlds with great characters. Fuck, I love Mass Effect and I love my Commander Shepard

Ezio Auditore from AC II.

He really grew on me, he has a great storyline and he actually has a personality.

Probably Viola from Eternal sonata. Fairly sensible, only a few years from my own age, and when she realises the guy she has romantic feelings for is into someone else, she rather sensibly (if sadly) accepts she should move on, instead of going 'OMG RELATIONSHIP TRIANGLE BS NOW!'

Zell Dincht and Seifer Almasy.

Zell is the cocksure, but struggling for confidence confused young man. Seifer is the ambitious, vulnerable and romantic man. Both at their cores decent men, run through the wringer. I think all in all, each of the character's of FFVIII I became/am attached to - each is really well fleshed out with genuine depth.

Bizarrely Kafei and Anju of Majora's Mask as well, mainly for how involved their quest was and the final moments waiting for Kafei to return, the eleventh hour playing and the moon staring me out. Only for all to come together and then having to race to go back three days.

No character from any video game I've played even compares to characters I've read about.

I recently finished reading The Talisman, almost 2 years since I first picked up the book. Finally picking that book back up and just racing to the finish felt amazing, Jack and Wolf reserved a special place in my memory.

John Marston
Atlas/Fontaine from Bioshock
Cloud FF VII

John- He would seem like a cool guy, tons of interesting stories
Atlas/Fontaine- A crazy madman with any power you could imagine, whats not to like?
Cloud- He seems like a battle-hardened warrior that could protect you no matter what, awesome experiences with this guy

Back when I played World at War, on Veteran, I spent an immense amount of time trying to complete it, and thus did become attached to the characters I played throughout the story. Especially the character you played in the final couple of missions, which took the longest to complete.

Also, for the short time I played Heavy Rain, I became attached to some of the characters in that game. I never even went far into the story before I started to feel sorry for them.

I've always had a fondness, and a bit of a thing, for psycho characters who appear all sweet and innocent, and yet beyond the cute exterior are manipulative sadists underneath. Hell, that's why half my original characters in my stories are that kind of person, both good and evil...

So for games, I'd have to go with Rena Ryugu, Alice (American McGee version), and Eleanor Lamb. For anything else, certainly Lucy (Elfen Lied), and Seras Victoria...

I never understood how much I cared for Alyx Vance from Half Life before her father died. I felt so sad watching her crying over her fathers corpse.

Pretty much all the characters from NieR. It was a pretty depressing game so the situations they were all in made me feel sympathy for them.

Morrigan from DA:O, I don't even know why. I suppose I just want to know MOAR about what happens with her and Flemeth.

When I've thought long and hard it boils down to three people, Snake from Metal Gear Solid for that series being one of the first to show me games can have REALLY good plots. Link from LOZ for just being a series I've played since a kid, or Ico from well.. Ico as that games atmosphere really makes you care about him.

In the second though, they really did make you care about him, especially the scene near the end with him simply hanging out with Zeke, which I think really helped the ending.
This was excellent, just a very simple way for you to bond with the character (tho I still like Zeke more!)

others
Ezio from AC, he's a character with a decent back story (for once)
Atton from KotOR II, I love Atton!
Shepherd from ME (I really care about who he dates?!?)

-PORTAL 2 SPOILERS (I'm sorry, I don't know how to make a little "spoiler" box) -

I loved Wheatley throughout the whole first half of Portal 2, he quickly became embedded in my heart the more I played ... but after he became evil, I did find myself growing more and more attached to GLaDOS. Wheatley really broke me heart though.
