Hmmm, it's probably easier for me to say characters I like that others don't, seeing as there aren't many characters I particularly dislike, even less so that are popular.

Is Miranda from Mass Effect popular? Because I am not too fond of her. She keeps trying to pretend Cerberus are actually puppy loving activists. Despite her claims of being perfect she seems to be hopelessly naive when it comes to The Illusive Man and the company that she works for. Plus all of the pathetic, unnecessary ass shots, although I guess that's not a character trait, so much as a camera angle they decide to use.

Cole from Gears of War is the most popular team member, but personally I find really loud and boisterous people to be really irritating. Although in the books it does explain why that is, and it is a good reason it doesn't change the fact that the dialogue in the games that he has is just horrible, clichéd and childish.

I don't "hate" these characters, but I am not a fan.

I have to agree, Merril from DA2. She just annoyed the hell out of me, I hate it when girls act cute and stupid. Grow some fucking balls, girls.
While I don't hate Merrill, they definitely overplayed the "cute but ditzy and naive" card. In some cases it worked, but it did get a little grating. Then again, I felt a lot of characters in DA2 were a little too confined into boxes, there was very little character development, even among my favourite characters such as Varric.

And in Game of Thrones: Arya. There, I admit it. To me she doesn't have a personality of her own, you can see how George just pushes her along the path he's decided for her instead of letting the character develop naturally.
Blasphemy! On a more serious note, again while I don't hate her I do feel her character arc feels a little... out of place. I spent most of the later books wondering how she ended up in this place and where it was going, because it didn't really seem to fit in with what it felt "should" happen.

2 common fan favorites;

River Tam from Firefly. I tend to defend Firefly whenever I call it a boring self-congratulatory pile of garbage by adding that at least the characters were fun and interesting. River is, however, the nail in that show's coffin. She's got all that "quirky" that makes her insufferable, she's got a mental illness that doubles as a superpower (which is ridiculous and insulting) and serves mainly to feed Whedon's bizarrly specific fetishes. I mean ew, guys. Just ew.

Second would have to be Wolverine. He's the definition of "Boring invincible hero" to me as he is invulnerable and, unlike Superman, doesn't have a "No killing" rule to keep him in check. Instead "badass" is his only character trait, hammered over and over again 'til we're all exhausted and bored. Maybe with some "oh no it sucks to be immortal" angst. Great.

Han Solo.

Arrogant, cheesy, misogynistic, big headed. Just an all around jerk, I don't understand the love for the 'bad boy' persona.
A large part of Han Solo's character is the subversion of the bad boy alpha male douchebag, though. That's why he comes back at the end of ANH to save the day, after all.

Scott Pilgrim. I thought the game was fun until I read the story now I just feel like he's an oblivious douche that unwittingly hurts his friends. Plus the hipster influence really grinds my teeth.

I perfectly understand what you mean but I think we shouldn't see Kratos as a hero, fallen hero or even anti-hero. He was a bit of an asshole before the events of God of War 1, but I think Kratos is a shining example of a very aggressive (with a lean towards being a boss in a different game) man who became a god and then went absolutely totally fucking insane. His antics are the events you personally play in the (too many) games.

To be honest? I really like it. I hate the opinion that people have on Spec Ops: The Line: "If you like that game, you're a bad person." which is such an amazingly giant pile of bullshit. I play games to be entertained first, and experience a fictional world and storyline second. I don't mind my characters being antagonistic. I'm up for change.

Tony Stark (Iron Man).

I just really don't care for this character and think he is overhyped. Big headed too often, egotistical and I just can't relate to him in anyway. I love the suits but the character I honestly don't care about.

Hitgirl from Kick-Ass (the movie, never read the comic).

I remember everyone losing their shit over Hitgirl when this movie first came out. And the reason was because she swore and killed people... That's it. That's all the character she has.

But the reason I really hate her is a) she's a little smartmouth, and b) the whole performance was nothing more than the usual "Look, it thinks it's grown-up." routine that every child actor gets lauded for. Oh yeah, she also says 'cunts' and 'cock' - That's so shocking for a little girl to say, it must cool and awesome, right?

Getting really sick of Batman. Everyone loves him, I know, but I've had more than enough of the guy.

More Green Lantern, though, please! Just...no Ryan Reynolds. He sucks too.

Kratos. I can't fucking stand Kratos from the God of War series.

Kratos is an idealized mad man who kills anyone he comes across if they happen to have something he wants. Or even if they don't. Sometimes they'll be willing to fucking GIVE him an item he needs if he'll help them out, and he'll still just kill them anyway. They try to paint this picture that he is a fallen hero who only became a monster after becoming the Ghost of Sparta, but he was a terrible person when he was serving Ares and he was a war mongering asshole even before that.

In God of War III, the world is slowly being destroyed by his actions and he doesn't seem to care. All that matters to him is his revenge for something that happened specifically to him. The first game is okay because I can at least buy into his back story about how Ares tricked him into killing his family in the hopes that without that attachment, he would become a more hardened warrior, but in the second game, he's just out for revenge against Zeus. Anyone that won't help him gets killed by him.

I guess I hate him most of all because so many people try to convince me that he's a tragic hero and that he does try to save people, but he only really tries to save people if they happen to have tits. If you ask me, Kratos brought all of the suffering he has endured upon himself.

I don't want all of my characters in video games to be shining examples of what it means to be a hero, but Kratos is just so contradictory that I can feel my left eye start to twitch whenever people try to convince me he isn't an asshole.

Well, yeah. David Jafee was the head of the 1st GoW development team and he was pretty much interested in making a good, well developed character. But the game became popular, Jafee left and one who came in charge after him decided to milk the game. But since the story in part 1 was completed, they had to give Kratos another reasons for being enraged. And we can see the results.

OT: Ellie from The Last of us. I don't HATE her, but I don't like her either. Someone at Naughty Dog decided that if Irrational and TellTale made female companion/escorted person and were successful, then they will be too.

As a result, we have a girl, that is a lot less useful than Elizabeth, a lot less lovable than Clementine, and she is also arrogant. Yeah, yeah, teenager, I get it. But that does not mean I am buying it.

I'll be frank, I didn't finish the game. I've stopped playing it after she started acting all tough and bossy towards the guy who could help them with the car(forgot his name, sorry).
I am watching a lets play of it, in order to maybe change my opinion about her (and because of story too, although it really feels like "Oscar-bait"). The guys are at that moment, when Joel gave Ellie his rifle, and I still have the same thoughts about her. Lets wait for the future episodes, then.

I always hated Merrill from DA2, mostly because I have a big issue with making deals with soul eating demons. Bioware tried to pull it's normal bull about nice people using bad powers for good, but for some reason when it comes to blood magic I refuse to buy it. Probably because of all the soul devouring demons.
But to be fair, not many people liked Merrill. It's just that the people who did like her wouldn't shut up.

Yosuke Hanamura from Persona 4.

The vast majority of Persona 4 fans are in love with this guy to the point where people call him Brosuke in a completely unironic matter (not nearly as bad as the people who say...*shudder* "Broswagonist" when talking about Yu, but still)

People treat him like he's this amazing friend because he sticks by Yu's side and never lets him down, but that really applies to all of the characters. The entire game is about these 8 people forming the Best Friends Forever club. Very little that Yosuke does throughout the course of the story makes him rise above any other character in terms of being a good friend. And even if he is a good friend to Yu, there are several cases where he's a pretty bad friend to the other people that are supposed to be his bestest friends. This takes the form of everything from small stuff like some playful ribbing, to bigger things like open insults or diving into subjects he knows makes people uncomfortable, to pretty big stuff like indicting public humiliation or even extortion.

And he does a lot of stupid stuff that often blows up in his face (and more often than not gets other people dragged into it) but does he ever apologize? Does he ever admit he was at fault? No. In fact, not only does he not take responsibility, but he usually complains about it more than the people who got dragged into the stupid mess he started.

I admit he's quite a bit more tolerable in his spin-off manga and in the sequel Persona 4 Arena, but in Persona 4 itself I just can't stand him. I think he's a pretty terrible person who I would not want to be around in real life.

Yet he's often ranked pretty high in character poles, and a lot of Persona fans really really like him.

I despise Elizabeth from BioShock: Infinite, half the time she acts incredibly emotional, being upset and being well characterised. However in gameplay she becomes an arrogant, sadistic and cold woman who gives little to no care for any life except characters with names. This odd and often fast change irritated me and yes, she's well written and I enjoy her voice acting, and the relationship between her and Booker is something I hardly see in gaming (although the "Call me Booker" thing happens far too often) but it mystifies me why everyone loves her.

Oh and there's also one thing that really put me off her,

After the final mission when Songbird is summoned to help and she's letting him destroy everything in his path, the Songbird goes to retrieve Elizabeth so her first reaction is to teleport the three to Rapture and brutally kill him by allowing the pressures of the ocean to crush him. While creative I was incredibly baffled by this, she says she hates Songbird but during that last level the way she exploits and just kills him in such a manner while going "It's alright, it's ok" made me believe that she's a psychotic *****.

Rick from the Walking Dead
Spiderman
Catelyn Stark (Game of Thrones)
Daenerys (Game of Thrones)

There are more, but these I can spout off the top of my head.

EDIT: You can lump most superheroes in that category. They are all terrible at life.

Oddly enough that is the point of the story, that he is a douche. The ending of it is about him realizing that hes not the perfect delicate flower he thinks he is and actually coming to terms that hes kind of a douche and becoming a better person.

As for my hated character, I'm gonna go with all the characters from Evenglion. I didn't like a single one of them, Shinji's dad is really the only vaguely entertaining one and he still deserves a punch in the face.

Ellie is far more useful then Elizebeth (I assume you mean Bioshock Infinite), and her arrogance tones down considerably once, you know - You make it further then 3 hours into the game.

You seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of what Stormbird actually is, and what 'It's alright, it's ok' typically means (Hint - It most common uttered small children when their in pain).

That being said, she really is a bit bipolar, isn't she?

I personally hate every character in the original Star Wars, minus Obi and Han. Luke is a stock character, Leia recovers from chronic ***** syndrome with just a little bit of the D (If you know what I mean), Chewbacca is an informed character, and I would personally destroy those robots with my bare hands if given a chance.

Also, Chewbacca spell checks as backache. Weird.

I know what the Songbird was, him being her "protector" of sorts and vowing to help her by bringing her food, books and stopping outsiders from getting to her. That's why he does what he does before well, erm, what I said after she orders him to ruin everything.

The whole scene might be a problem with the game's attitude to gore and brutality, but since it was Elizabeth that done it I either think that she's really broken in the head or she actually hated Songbird that much (which isn't really displayed in the game to be honest) to warrant it.

"How could you hate any one with those 'fuck me' eyes?" As my friend so... eloquently put it.

Not that I disagree with him, I just might have worded it a little different if my girlfriend was present (as his was).

OT: I don't think I do hate any popular characters. Hating a fictional character is too much effort, especially if I've stopped watching/reading/playing whatever they were in.

Duke Nukem - He's basically the ultimate misogynistic jerk in full power fantasy mode. I also don't get why he's liked by gamers considering if many of them met him in high school, he'd be the one stuffing their heads into toilets. It also doesn't help that many of his lines are stolen from other properties and he's claiming them as his own without irony.

Where's all the love for Ashley and Vega? I see far more hate for them than even tolerance.

Anyways, I'd have to go with Tywin Lannister. Well, not so much "love", but I see a lot of people pointing out the nice things he does to show that he's not that bad of a guy, but with what he did to Tyrion, and how he continues to treat Tyrion, I have nothing but contempt for him.
people think he does nice things? are you talking from book or tv perspective, because i can understand if from the TV, kind of, but the books make it damn clear that all he does is for power, for himself and the lannister house. nothing he does is out being nice or nasty.

OT: Daenerys Targaryen, because (Dance of Dragons spoilers coming up)

her damn obsession with being the mother just angers me. i get it, you have principles about slaves, but she is given so many opportunities to do something much better, like marry and then leave Hizdahr as king and continue on to westeros, or abandon meereen and marry quentyn martell and have all of dorne behind her, or just become an oppressive ruler with her dragons. but no, she's too nice and kind. plus she seems like such a little girl when she starts having sex with daario. i'm mainly bitter that she really doesn't do... anything in DoD, and it's frustrating to read.
