I am absolutely talking about the Old English Epic. I hate that so much, I never even remotely entertained the idea of seeing the movie. See, the reason Grendel's Mother is, in my opinion, the best character in the story is because she is the only one that isn't either a spineless sycophant or a glory hound, murderous, braggart, all around fucking douche bag that is Beowulf. Seriously, everything that Beowulf says is entirely focused on how awesome he is. There is nothing there beyond that. There's no honor to him, he didn't come Heorot to protect anyone, his motivations are entirely selfish (glory and riches).Dwarfman said:Ummm. Are we talking about the movie or the original Old English Epic. Cause there ain't nothing nice or sexy about Grendel's mom in the original tale. That being said if you are talking about the movie I thoroughly agree with you as Beowulf is a braggart and liar in the movie.Furbyz said:OT: Beowulf. I loathe Beowulf with the kind of rage that rivals an entire Religion and Politics forum. How in the hell is the only remotely excusable character in that 1200-year-old piece of garbage Grendel's Mother? I understand that story telling conventions have massively changed in the last millenia or so, I do not care. I hate it and specifically him far too much to use reason. I especially hate how he's in this really annoying Protagonist/Mary Sue bubble that makes everyone and thing around him worship him on sight. Literally, when the watchman on the coast sees Beowulf's ship filled with potential invaders his first reaction is, "LOOK AT THAT HUNK OF MAN!!!" and proceeds to verbally fellate him.
I hate Beowulf.
Like alot.
Compare that to Grendel's Mother. The biggest evil in the land, lets her son wander off at night to get himself dinner (Giant marauding demon's have to eat too) like he always does, all of a sudden he gets back to the lake with his arm has been torn off, and he's bleeding to death in front of her. It is now officially murdering time. She shows up at Heorot to get her dead boy's arm back, and they've mounted it on the wall like a trophy. She takes it back after only killing like a dozen people, then goes home. Beowulf shows up to kill her, she does a much better job of trying to kill him, then dies to the sword of deux ex machina.
So yeah, Grendel's old lady is the best character in that story. And she doesn't even get a name. Over the centuries story telling conventions and culture in general have changed such that nearly every positive quality Beowulf had can now be construed as negative. It's not the story's fault, time changes everything.
