made my best 'online friend' in a forza2 room.
however, the more popular the game is, the greater the chance of meeting jerkasses in my expirence.
That's a good point - more players more douchebags.

I'll have to give the Horde mode of Gears 2 a go. Not really tried it that much.

Sometimes, yeah, I've made some decent online friends that way, including a couple who came down to my city for a weekend for my mate's birthday. It's always nice to find people on XBL who aren't dicks.

Yup! I try to give every new room the benefit of the doubt.
I usually start with a "Hey guys, what's goin' on?" type of greeting.
The guy(s) who starts swearing a ton gets muted, and everyone else is usually silent, or normal people.
I've met some great guys online that way!

Nah, I'm pretty much silent all the time, IRL and online.

But obviously there is justification for not talking on XBL.

Besides I tried to in the past in team games on Halo 3 and CoD4, no one ever answered so I just stopped caring.

I hardly talk while playing that game(Left 4 dead you have to) I usually plug in my mic and set it on the floor just so I wont hear their voices. However I have played Search and Destroy for 3 hours before with the same people in the game and we were all having a blast we were raggin on each other had shield wars and it was probly the most fun that game has ever been for me because no one was glitching, or being over competitive, it was just fun

Yeah, sometimes. It's nice to communicate with your team.

If they're douchebags I'll just mute em or have a bit of fun winding them up.

Everytime i go on L4D its populated by 3 /b/tards so conversations are often funny and a good chat. GTA4 has its good topic now and then. I rmeeber i was drunk, my friend was drunk and a randomer was high and we ended up talking about the man while we did drive bys on other players.

It's not easy getting a decent chat on Live. One reason is pretty well represented by this Encyclopedia Dramatica's picture found in the Halo article:

"DUDE U SUK"

It's even worse when you're playing GTA IV. Everyone seems to believe they're Playboy X or something.
"Yuzzi you mothafucka. Imma kill yo ass next time."

Not really. Mainly because my english doesn't seem to be good enough to understand what is said most of the time. Funny really, since I don't have any problem talking to people in english in real life.

It is maybe 1 out of every 20 people I meet on XBL that is not a total tard and will talk/be helpful in MP games. What I have found more helpful is you friend the people who are talkative in a good way and play with them. I've got 20+ friends for MW2 now and I can always game with them. The biggest problem we have no is having too many people who want to play together. And this goes for any MP game, play if for a week or so and friend the people who talk and are helpful.

And it may seem like common sense, but just mute the idiots (and there are plenty of them) and be polite to everyone else.

When I had "Live Gold" I did, but only with friends I think.

I do talk to people over the PSN mind...

Give Left 4 Dead a try. You need to play that with a mic otherwise you aint getting your moneys worth.
You meet some really cool people online.
Yeah, like the people who join an expert game to teamkill everyone and laugh in a super high pitched tone and then leaves? I prefer the PC community for that game.

Gears of War 2 has a very... different community. One game it could be silent, another could be a bunch of kids screaming "YOUR MOM!" over the mic, and another could be a group of people willing to cooperate and use teamwork.

But the best conversation I ever had (and I've told this story on these forums before) is on Counter-Strike: Source (notice that it wasn't on Xbox Live) I used to play on this killer server where people would just have nice conversations and play a little game of Counter-Strike. Once we had a 2-3 hour long conversation about politics that involved no flaming. I think that is proof of miracles.

I like to chat but if no one else is I wont because most of the time people are on party or private chat, I did make 3 friends on xbox live once when playing cod4 after someone had said something really silly and we started joking about

i usually talk to people in GTA IV, but GTA IV has some of the most annoying and idiotic people I've ever heard in a game. I don't even want to describe some of things I've heard in that game.
