[HEADING=1]Cheat Codes...[/HEADING]

...which are usually associated with games like Contra and Grand Theft Auto are very unusual in this day and age of unlimited lives and Super Easy difficulties present in games today. In my opinion, the last truly great game for cheating was Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and that game came out in 2004. There are very few games that allow you to perform a drive-by shooting in a hovercraft in 2009-2010, wouldn't you agree? I mean, sure, a lot of games such as Half-Life 2 (+Ep. 1 and 2) allow you to get some more HP by Konami-Coding your way through a difficult section. But think about it, the only mainstream or mainstream-ish games that encourage cheating is the Grand Theft Auto series! The GTA IV Liberty City saga saved your recently activated cheat codes in your phone, for easy access.

So, what I'd like for you to do here is discuss the dying race of cheat codes and/or name any recent games that have loads of cheats to enter.

Bayonetta had cheat codes...

But yes, I miss the cheat codes. I only used them after beating the main story anyway so they just made succesive playthrough more enjoyable.

Most of all, I miss Big Head mode. Damn you developers, give me my giant heads!

Dammit!

I could've used them T.T
Well, maybe not. You need a nice amount of halos in order to use any of the good cheats... Halos in the millions. It's easy to farm halos but still, you'd likely already beatin the game before you could use the cheats.

i love cheat codes like in Jedi Knight 3, also known as Jedi Academy; where you could add a platoon of Stormtroopers vs a Rancor, or jedis vs sith battles !!!
or that one time, playing Gothic 3 once again with Cheats was very entertaining once you understand how to put the Console and adding warring faction npc's

also somebody said that Red Faction 3/guerilla was better to play with cheats from the beginning because the game itself restrains the player from doing whatever he wants...

oh! i remember Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction, which had some funny cheats! like being Indiana Jones or Han Solo in North Korea! XD

wow strangely the last 2 games i mentioned are GTA-like games...

It would be good if it was unlocked after you beat the game, like what uncharted did. Otherwise there is no challenge/point.

So what was the best game that had cheats?

As I said, the best game in my own opinion is Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

I think as games get better, cheat codes are less needed. We used to get them because you could get stuck in a game easily.

If you beat the game, what good is a cheat? You want it to be easier to beat it the next time? That really seems to be pointless.

I'm too lazy to fight my way through most games, so I loved cheats.

i'd tend to disagree! age of empires had some good original cheats! like the viperlasercar or the Astronaut guy with a Jamesbond laserthingy!

It used to be that almost all games were single-player or were at least limited to a single console/computer even if multiple people were using it at once. Sure there are plenty of games out there that supported internet multiplayer and had cheat codes but as multiplayer became more common I think cheat codes started to become less desirable.

Surprisingly, it was a best kept secret, but the Kingdom Hearts series had cheat codes

I thought the same thing when i read that.

OP: yeah, i think it's pretty much dead. there are titles that allow it every now and then, but GTA is about the only series that keeps it true.

Not sure if the Tony hawk games still allow it or not. the THPS series were, in my eyes, one of the most fun games to cheat in. the second one even let you fly around the levels, and it was awesome. haven't played a tony hawk game since the first underground though, so i wouldn't know.

Games these days are starting to have less and less cheat codes. I used my Gameshark a lot with my PS2 but now they aren't even being made for the PS3. Kinda nice the PC has developer console cheats though.

I don't like cheat codes, so the less games with cheats the better. Although, in Saint's Row the cheat were all cars try to chase you down and kill you is pretty cool.

Maybe, but there are still trainers, :) not saying that I use them.

Anyways, Age of Empires, W:RoC, and SC I, had some pretty good cheat codes, especially AoE. Also Ratchet an Clank had "Secrets". Good times. Good times.

Also F3 and L4D2 had Command Console inputs, which was sorta like cheats. especially TGM.
