I cannot recommend Beyond Good and Evil highly enough, then. Seriously, go play it now.

I agree in some cases, but I think this is only because most male archetypes have been done to death in video games. There's no reason a female character is inherently more interesting than a male one, but female leads are rare enough in video games that it's always refreshing to see a female lead, assuming they're a complex character that is developed well (I hate it when a game has a female lead for the sole purpose of sex appeal).
Well said, good sir. Lara Croft was a breath of fresh air when she came out.

It's doesn't make me feel less manly, but I don't enjoy the game is much, because I cannot re;at to the character as much as I could a male character. I, however, love the option to play as a female, or having the secondary character be a strong female.

Anyway, the point is, I love video game girls. My personal favorites are Cammy, Psylocke, Jill Valentine, Lara Croft, Felicia, Rikku, Princess Ashe, C. Viper, Kitana, and Tali.
Rikku from FFX or X-2? Kitana is the most vicious from that list.

Female characters do have a lot of potential and I personally find it more interesting when I am playing as a female character and trying to compare their views to mine. Video games always seem to miss the target by a mile, considering 8/10 of my favorite novels involve female protagonists, but I can't remember the last female character I enjoyed in a game.

That being said, Alyx from HL2 is probably my favorite female character of all time and in the top 5 of Greatest Sidekicks.

It depends.

If the character is just eyecandy (I'M LOOKING AT YOU IVY FROM SOUL CALIBUR), I dunno, it feels weird. I feel like I'm taking some sort of advantage over my teammate with those tig ol bitties.

*Deadpan* Yes, I feel horribly emasculated whenever I play a female character. :|

The only reason I prefer male leads over female is because I project myself onto whatever character I'm playing. If they're female, then it's hard for me to do that, lol. I do occasionally make female characters in games that allow you to pick gender (like Dynasty Warriors) and I have a pool of female characters that I choose from. Now in Street Fighter, I originally chose Ken because he had a green fireball, and because my brother chose Ryu. Now I just like him.

If you have SFIV, whenever my PS3 gets fixed, we can have a match online.
Actually, pretty much this. I'll usually play a male character (especially in RPGs), but I'm not against playing a female. Especially if its a fighting game and I like the moveset. Like Taki or Tira or Setsuka or Amy or Ivy or ... what? I play some male characters too. It just usually happens that the female characters have the faster attack styles (which I usually like).

I love video game girls. I think a game with a female lead is exponentially more interesting than a game with a male lead. There is just something so awesome about a girl who can kick ass. That being said, I don't like female mages. They're so cliche and boring to me. A female healer...riveting. Aeris was ok, though. Sorry, now I'm just rambling. Not really, and I honestly don't see how it should. For example, when I play Naruto: Ninja Storm 2, I usually choose to fight as Hinata, simply because I can play as that character well. There isn't another reason, and no real reason to feel non-manly or whatever.

Entrari#'s and Thaius:

Both have some valid things to say.

Relating to a character can be important to a playable experience, but a good story can be it's own unique thing. In this, I can see gender as being an obstacle. In some games, I play fully for the story, but when I'm the one who can _be_ the character, I very much do pick (or even modify) the character to look as much as I do.

I guess the difference is; are you playing the role as provided, or do you role-play the story?

You know what I like to see in RPGs? Male clerics. There's something about a man who is kind to everyone that makes me want to...violate him.

But that's just me.
Especially if he's celibate?
Oh, God yes.
Is it wrong I find that incredibly sexy?
Then we're both incredibly wrong.
and thats how the yaoi/rape fanfics are born. I ame actually a male but as of late i prefer playing as a female character because i'm tired of the typical female stereotype. The being female is to overly sensitive or perky. I try to play as what i picture a normal female to be like. I am completely comfortable with my sexuality. Also when playing mmo or team shooters females tend to get better teamwork with everyone trying their best to protect her. Then again the go make me a sandwich gag and other bad flirting gets old

Well I prefer FFX more, so I guess FFX Rikku. And yeah Kitana is pretty vicious, but I think overall Cammy is the the nastiest...at least when she was brainwashed and working for Shadaloo. She murdered innocent people without batting an eye.

No especially if your good with them.
I wonder if that's changed at all over the years. I was only 7 when Street Fighter 2 came out, so I'm not really sure how the gaming scene was back then. Were guys made fun of for picking Chun Li? Hmmm I wonder.
Only a touch. Generally, when guys were getting beat by a friend who was good at playing her, it turned to analysis of her abilities and a respect for the skills of the player. For a gamer, skill/ability of the player or the character comes first.

It doesn't make you less many if they rule. I always liked Chun Li the best, but Jill Valentine ain't bad. Storm can really bring the noise in the Marvel Ultimate Alliance games.

O.O

Reminded me of Storm ... back in the days of X-men vs Street Fighter, everyone thought it was so very cool to do infinite combos.
Uhh ... by definition infinite combo = not a game.

So I devised an anti-infinite strategy with Storm ... do a super jump, back into the corner, hold up so she floats down slowly, then mash HP while watching your opponent's hands.
Your super meter builds up really fast, and if they try anything, just react ('cos you're watching their hands) ... from punishing a silly attack to block/backthrow/super, it was quite possibly the trolliest tactic I brought into the video arcades.

The funny part is, PEOPLE WHO DID INFINITE COMBOS WERE RAGING.
Oh, the irony.

If given the choice, I usually will play a female character at least on one playthrough. Generally I prefer it, not because theyre "action girls" though, just because its interesting roleplaying from a female point of view.

Also, please dont take that last sentence out of context.

I suggest you play Iji [http://www.remar.se/daniel/iji.php]. Now. Noooooooow.

Really, it's free. There's no excuse.

My favourite fighting game ever (beating Brawl and some Gundam games) is Touhou Hisoutensoku, of which Youtube has many videos.

I'd say no. And as my playing that game, Kirby and a bunch of others may tell you, I honestly don't care.
This too, is my favorite fighting game. Do I feel less manly playing it? No. do the female fighting animations look better than what a male model would?(in my opinion yes)
Personally, I'm indifferent. The characters are awesome in a mildly psychotic sort of way, fancy moves are had, things go boom, I am content.

Also, I would challenge you to a 'net round of the game, but I'm in Japan, so lag would probably reach Matrix-esque proportions.

the ONLY time i had a problem playing a female is in nightfire, some woman i was was wearing nail polish. now i really hate nail polish in general but to see fucking nail polish wielding a heat-seeking rocket launcher or a laserbeam shooting death machine just kills me. but yeah, game chicks are usually pretty cool.

I'm pretty sure that it's only men that are secure in their masculinity that don't have issues with playing as girls in a game, fighting or otherwise.
This. It was always weird for me, as whenever my friends and I would play a fighting game and I picked a female character, they'd give me odd looks. Usually it would end with me being called a pervert.

Silly people.

I always play as a female when given the option. Fighting games its more about move sets than anything, but with everything else I always play the opposite sex. Why? Because female characters, though increasingly more common, are still a risk to developers because of the legion of idiots who wont play as a girl because they cant 'relate' to them. I like to think Im rewarding gutsy developers for taking a chance, but also because the voice acting is usually better, the character models are more dynamic, and because its just fun to escape your own gender sometimes. I like being a man, but games allow me to experiment, so i will.

Well ... my sort of response to people who thinks it's weird:

"You're playing Ryu, really? He punches cars, jumps 20 feet in the air, and throws plasma out of his hands. How is that any less weird than playing Chun Li?"
