I find it funny how no news story ever reports on the mans recent history. The couple who let their baby die had just lost their jobs and were going through a state of depression. Could you guys try to find out more about him?

One can live in a democracy and still have curtailments of civil liberties. We have all sorts of democracies around the world that are...unpleasant to live in.

There are all sorts of things not mentioned...including the man's name. I'm skeptical about the whole thing.

Don't you have a better picture to use than the Chinese flag? Should we use the American flag whenever we post a story based in the US?

(South) Korea and Japan may not be totalitarian, but their societies still put a lot of pressure on people. Just regarding Japan, I've read articles about people bailing out on the society by moving to the US (illegally, even) or just never, ever leaving their rooms.

I'm not so sure. Granted, Japan isn't repressing it's citizens in the way China is, but it's still very repressed culturally.
You get put under a lot of stress to perform and conform to society's expectations...
Ever wonder where those crazy Japanese game shows come from? It almost seems like a way to deal with the stifling nature of their day-to-day life...
You both make a decent argument there. I don't know their culture intimately or personally so I wasn't willing to extend the hypothesis to the culture. It the culture is as repressive and controlling as you say I could easily see how the members would look for a way to get out and control something by their own choice. I'd be interested in looking at suicide stats for those countries. Suicide is often a reaction to an overwhelming feeling of no control. Everyman is responsible for their own choices, but the culture needs to change if it exerts such a negative influence.

And the cafe workers did nothing for those 3 days?

They didn't kick him out? Tell him to sleep & eat? Anything?
And they should care why? As long as the sucker was paying he could of died 4 deaths for all they cared.

At least he died doing what he liked.

You're right, it is unreal how old it is... because it isn't old, it happened yesterday, which makes it new, not old.

Those of you making these "natural-selection" and "Darwinism" comments and laughing at this man's death, I'm not sure I can even call you human-beings any more. These are vile, despicable, reprehensible attitudes and represent the absolute worst component of the gaming community, in my opinion. It is these kinds of attitudes that are the reason the gaming community is not taken seriously by the rest of the world. Why should others have respect for you when you show no respect for others? You may think you're just being funny, but you're not realizing how seriously others may look upon the matter.
Seconded.

But people in this forum just love shouting "Darwinism".
Third...ed.

No human is inherently evil or moronic or idiotic or stupid. Something is wrong in the environment he lives and grew up for him to die like this.

At least he died doing what he loved, like Mickey Rourke at the end of the Wrestler, his heard just couldn't take it.

But seriously, I've gamed for 24 hours straight, me and my buddies went as long as we could. I could probably do 3 days, but I kind of don't want to die.

Another poor soul falls victim to losing their life to a game, and so another story is made that will make nutters who say that games are evil bolder in their arguments. In any event, it always makes me sad to hear when something like this happens. On some level, it is a story of a personal tragedy, since I don't know anybody who is doing well in their life who would willingly play games for that long in one sitting.

Surely he had some pre-existing medical condition? I've gamed for 72+ hours before and suffered nothing more than vague hallucinations.

DUDE. The people who run the "Darwin Awards" website would like a word. It's so rare that they actually get interviews with their subjects.

If you're failed out of college and have nothing left except enough money to play video games till you die, it's not a bad way to go.
Otherwise, that really sucks.

God I've heard this story a thousand times over. IT IS DANGEROUS TO PLAY GAMES FOR OVER 24 HOURS STRAIGHT! THE SLEEP DEPRIVED MIND CAN'T STAND WHAT IT INTEREPTS AS THE GAME REALITY ATTACKING IT REPEATEDLY!

Think it's kinda odd this only seems to happen in Eastern Cultures. Maybe they play harder then americans do?
