All of these stories seem to be linked to the social problems of gaming in these nations, but I don't know that games are the root cause. Sure, MMOs use mechanics that can can be addictive, but perhaps the economic conditions and lack of civil liberties make these poor souls more susceptible to poor choices when it comes to gaming.

I'm very suspicious of these stories. They never seem to happen in the West. Rather, they always seem to happen in countries looking for excuses to try and shut down or limit their populace's freedom of assembly. And also, rather mysteriously, these stories never seem to be verified.
To be fair, the most notorious Asian nation in that respect is South Korea, which is a democracy...

It think you may have a good insight there. They lack true control and freedom in their lives with the exception of their virtual lives. This hypothesis works for totalitarian places like China and Vietnam, but fails to explain such behavior in places like Korea and Japan.
Well in South Korea it could be to forget about North Korea, there's kinda a lack of control there too I mean there's a guy sitting there who wants to take your home and there's nothing you can really do about it.

With Japan I have no idea though.

Funny, I can't bear standard MMOs for more than ten minutes, and Asian MMOs are the worst of the worst.

Assuming it's an MMO, anyways.

Nail, Hammer, Head, Greg. I think you've found the problem. Their lives are fucked up in a way we can't begin to understand. Personally, despite how arrogant it sounds, I think what is happening is the weaker willed folks among them are snapping and just ending it because they are basically peons in a real life city/nation sim.

... Ya, that would depress the shit out of me too. :/

Wow....Just Wow

i blame the gamer first but second blame goes to the internet cafe not noticing that some psycho has been there for 3 friggen days and not saying anything about it....

my suspicions for his death lead me to think he might have had a blood clot build up, i hear thats something that can happen if you stick yourself in one position for too long, why on long flights flight attendants are required to wake you up if you sleep through 2 meals.

Operant Conditioning and Grind have killed a human being?
Eh. This isn't the first time this has happened, nor will it be the last.

Fair enough but I think Joe gave an idea. Their lives aren't that peachy either, not as bad as China but there are probably factors we don't know about or ones we don't consider like the whole NK wanting to eat your country and probably stole a few of your relatives thing.

Japan, well, Hmmm... It is hard to get a bead on a society like Japan. We only see the crazy/funny side but seem to miss all the social pressure to succeed and conservative undertones. However, I lack proper information sources so I'll not get into that aspect.

What, again? When will people in Asia learn... You would think that at 30 he would have had some sense. Unless... He chose to commit suicide through gaming?!

We lost a moron.

Having said that, whose more stupid? The person who kills when playing video games by ignoring basic human needs like food and sleep, or the people who own the cafe and just let him do it?
Its not their job to watch you. They're a business, you paid them, they dont care anymore. Should McDonalds take care of you if you have a stroke from deciding to sit and eat their food all the time?

First off, I've never been in an internet cafe... but I'm under the impression they don't serve food/drink? Though a water fountain would not have been too hard to find I'm sure (maybe, never been to China either). But don't those places... I don't know... close? Why didn't they call someone sooner or, like it's been said, cut him off? I'm somewhat amazed that the cafe is in business at 3 in the morning... he must've been the only on in there....

I don't know the prices in there for 1 hour of gaming in internet cafe, but considering he spent ~1500$ it must have not been his first all nighter there, thus it is possible that it was just those 3 days too much after wrecking his organism for whole month with very little sleep over the course of his playing.

It is possible that he played in chunks for 1-2 days with as little as 1-2 hours of sleep in between his trips to the cafe. Over longer period of time i can see how it could be quite deadly especially if he also didn't eat, drink or pee.

Even as a person with sleeping disorder, every time i have few sleepless nights my organism will sooner or later will want to catch up and force me into longer sleep during day, efficiently knocking me out for those few hours to get things straight.

WHO CARES.

You know what anyone spending 1500 bucks on games in three months? Just games? Sounds like he knew he was dying and instead of getting a valve in his heart replaced...he well bought everything on Steam.

WHO CARES.
IT IS NOT NEWS.

It's pathetic silliness. Here is the news title then

Korean/Chinese gamers need to be baby sat while playing games. Ignore basic life functions like food, drink, using the toilet, and sleep.

What next we have to add O2 tents to the internet cafes?

Sheesh. I wish I could add a troll face to this, but if someones life sucks that hard and means so little... let um die.

Damn, these Asian gamers are crazy. Every now and again we hear about someone dying from over-gaming. But the truth is, whatever he did for 3 whole days without sleeping, eating, drinking and going to the bathroom it's gonna end up with death. It's natural. He was an idiot.

In the last month of his life he spent $1,500 in that cafe and not even a complimentary donut or cup of coffee! What the hell and they didn't even think to try and persuade him to leave at all. But that would mean they wouldn't get more money, forgot about that.

Man whats up with the folks in the asian part of the world? I played for 4 days straight with obvious bathroom breaks and food and you know water...and while at the end of that I was quite delusional infact reported that I asked my mommy where the goblin cave was *was playing oblivion mind you* I didn't die... Do these folks over there not eat, drink or use the bathroom or something?

I'm not so sure. Granted, Japan isn't repressing it's citizens in the way China is, but it's still very repressed culturally.

You get put under a lot of stress to perform and conform to society's expectations...
Ever wonder where those crazy Japanese game shows come from? It almost seems like a way to deal with the stifling nature of their day-to-day life...

I'm starting to believe this is just a new way of suicide. How could one possibly play for 72 hours straight? They're on the internet, they should know what happens. Also doesn't their own bodies oh I don't know demand food/water/sleep?

It's been mentioned a couple times, but where were the Cafe employees in this? Okay, sure, it's not like bars in Canada where we have a legal responsibility to care about our customers well being, but how could you let someone sit at a computer for THREE DAYS and not think "Hmm, maybe we should cut him off?"

Admittedly I know precious little about the culture on that side of the pond, but I would think that someone clearly showing signs of addiction would warrant concern even from a bystander, could you imagine how badly he must have smelt after the second day?

Really makes you wonder...

What can I say? There are people who die because of addictions all the time. Video games are no different.
Hehe, now that made my night! ^^

OT: Again? Something is really fucking wrong with something over there for people to act like this!

Those of you making these "natural-selection" and "Darwinism" comments and laughing at this man's death, I'm not sure I can even call you human-beings any more. These are vile, despicable, reprehensible attitudes and represent the absolute worst component of the gaming community, in my opinion. It is these kinds of attitudes that are the reason the gaming community is not taken seriously by the rest of the world. Why should others have respect for you when you show no respect for others? You may think you're just being funny, but you're not realizing how seriously others may look upon the matter.
Seconded.

But people in this forum just love shouting "Darwinism".
