I'm an atheist and I want christmas to be churchy. I love singing christmas hymns and that's basically the only reason I ever go to church and why I will take my kids to church every christmas. It's nothing to do with faith, it's a cultural holiday that should be celebrated as it has been for years.

what you say here is very disrespectful.
I haven't seen a single atheist ever that takes "merry Christmas" as an insult.

Also, typos. typos everywhere.

yes I think Christmas should return to what it was before the first Roman(nationality) Christian(religion) king forced Christianity into the Christmas celebration which wear about rewarding the good and punishing the bad and had nothing to do with any religion so that all people may take part in the celebration.

Umm have people forgotten then the whole reason we have christmas is because of christianity? If you don't believe then that's fine, enjoy the non religious side of it but let those who do believe celebrate THEIR holiday their way.

Well at the end of the day Britain America and Ireland are all Christian countries, so if it offends you, man the fuck up! U dont go into a different country and tell them what they can and cant celebrate! Imagine if you went to the middle east and said that their religious holidays offended you and you demand they stop.

The War on Christmas?

NO. DOESN'T EXIST. Witness Christianity's cultural domination of the USA and much of Europe, and accept that some people view it as a cultural, rather than relgious holiday, with little effect on any particularly religious celebrations.

The parts of Christmas which may in rare cases have a toned-down Christian content are the parts of Christmas which arose from German and Dutch folk traditions, arising from earlier pagan beliefs. Are people marching into your church and telling you to keep it down? No. It's a religious holiday for you, and feel free to partake of that in whatever way you feel is fitting.

For a significant proportion of the population of the western world it's a cultural holiday, with its roots in Christianity, but not ultimately tied down to it.

A time of peace and goodwill to all men, a sentiment which extends beyond the people who attend the religious service or sing carols, but not necessarily everyone.

I'm just a little tired of people claiming they're being discriminated against by not having religio-cultural domination enforced by the state.

Enjoy the Christmas/Hannukah/Non-Denominational Opportunity to Get Roaring Drunk in Front of Granny/etc... season, and a happy new Gregorian calendar year.

Most people i know just have Christmas because its there not because of religion. my Fiancées Parents are Muslim and dont celebrate but all their children do (my fiancée her sis and bro) they also celebrate Ramadan.

Im an atheist but if you say merry christmas i'll say it right back with a smile, im not a particular fan of the holiday in general, not cause of the whole religion thing im just cynical that way :p But i do love giving gifts to friends and family :D so im just a mixed bag of crazy!

Merry Christmas all :D

(and Bah Humbug to all the others like me ;))

People still think Christmas has something to do with Christ?
how misguided.

I don't like how you say all agnostics and atheist should ''go eat acid''.
That's not very Christian of you.

Uh, I read the OP some three times or so and I'm still not sure what the problem addressed here is.

To me, Christmas has never been a religious holiday. It's a winter festival with pagan roots that nobody really gives a damn about as long as they get to do something merry in the middle of a dark, cold season. Apart from some Christmas songs and some church stuff shown on TV, you don't really even bump into mentions of Christian things on Christmas, not in my country anyway. Hell, in my language Christmas doesn't even have a name that implies Christian involvement, the name comes from Yule and Santa Claus is called the Yule Goat.

I don't care what religious people do/don't do on Christmas. I would be annoyed if people said something like "May God bless you!" upon wishing me a merry Christmas, but nobody does that here, so yeah.

Quoted for truth. Nobody is trying to make Christmas more secular than it already is. The whole "Happy Holidays" thing is actually pretty old, and simply an acknowledgment that, you know, there are quite a few holidays in the time frame; There's at least one major holiday per month from October through February, with as many of them being Christian in nature as secular or belonging to another religion. The only call for a more secular Christmas would be if a government entity decides to violate the Establishment Clause by holding some sort of Christmas celebration. They can celebrate Christmas without violating the clause, but to do so, they either have to do an all-encompassing thing with all of the religious holidays from the same period, or simply focus on the secular aspect. There's a reason we have a separation between Church and State.

As a Christian I say go ahead and remove all the religousness out of it. At the end of the day Christmas came about as a means to advertise Christianity to the Germanic and Norse tribes. It occurs on the winter solstice which was a very important day back then and the Holy Roman Empire wanted something to counter it. Nowadays it has no meaning neither for christian or pagan. It is a day to celebrate corperate money making schemes like santa claus and force people to feel obliged to spend money they don't have for people they don't like.

BAH HUMBUG!!!

It'd be great if you could add some punctuation, because it's a bit hard to read otherwise.

I'm a Jew and I don't care if Christmas is full of Christian themes. Why would I be offended if other people celebrate their faith? o_O

It's whatever you want it to be. For some, it's glory to the newborn king and to others its just a profit margin.

But one thing we can all agree on is that presents are awesome. Giving and receiving.
