Civ IV was a piece of junk in my eyes, i hope they make this one a lot better, i might take a look at it.
Care to expand on that? I'm pretty curious about Civ4.

I've always been very curious about the whole Civ series actually, because I really want a true strategy game for once, not a tactical war game. I tried getting into that genre by buying The Settlers: Rise of an Empire (shush, I'm new to this ok?) and whilst being very enjoyable it was also extremely simple.

I thought Civ4 would be better, more complicated, but you don't seem to hold a very high opinion about Civ4. Care to explain why?
Uh to tell you the truth its not that much of a strategy game. People will tell me otherwise but that was one of the most boring hours of my life. Started off with Egypt bordering Russia and having 5 city sized savages hit each other with clubs on the head which i guess represented a battle, and with so many time periods you cant really make a good well rounded game. If you want a strategy game get Empire total war. The campaign map is very challenging and fun, and you also have full on destruction in real time battles.
So you don't think it is a strategy game because why? You didn't like the graphical representation of the units??? I don't get it.

I didn't like the combat, the inaccuracy, and the dullness. It just didn't ring my bells like the total war series for example.
Err, but you said that it wasn't much of a strategy game. How does the game being dull make it any less of a strategy game? The best you can say is you don't like this particularly strategy game, but you said it wasn't a strategy game.

I think Civ4 is a great game and very strategic. You have alot of possible paths and strategies to take and have to constantly set priorities and manage tradeoffs, such as:
- Work more land, or hire specialists?
- Build a city on the better land, or near the strategic resource?
- Improve infrastructure or build units for defense?
- Invest in a risky long-term wonder or focus on smaller improvements?
- Go for the religion technology or for the advancement that will give you a military edge?
- play nice with a neighbour or prepare for an invasion?

This is just scratching the top. You can win in alot of different ways: cultural victory, military victory, diplomatic victory, technological victory and highest score. And once you get bored, there are so many excellent mods out there (WW2 Mod, Fall From Heaven Fantasy Mod, Rhyes and Fall of Civilization...) to keep you occupied for years.

Seriously, if you think there isn't much strategy to Civ IV, you didn't get into the game much.

Uh. My machine is not up to this challenge. Which is good, because my wife already lived through being a Civ IV widow.

In addition to what Tiamat666 said, one of the great things about the Civ series and what keeps you playing for so long is it's customizability. As much as I love the total war series this is where it falls short: each game you start on the same map with the same opponents. You can mix it up by starting at different ends of the map, but eventually you're going to be conquering the same opponents. They basically do this to maintain historic accuracy, one of my pet peeves about the series.

With the Civilization series, so much if it is customizable that you can get what seems like an endless amount of game experiencs. With Civ IV you can set the speed of the game so it lasts at the quickest 2-4 hours, or the longest 20-40 hours. Choose how many opponents you want, randomize it or pick specific ones. You can crowd the map with other Civilizations or keep it light and give everyone lots of space. Map sizes range from tiny to huge. Play on a world with one super contintent, multiple contintents, or a series of islands, and dozens of other map types. Make the climate to be ice age, temperate, or arid. Adjust the sea level to give more/less land space. Etc etc etc. A world map is always there as an option too, and while that's fun it can't compare to the endless versatility Civ's flexible world creator gives you.

And that's not even touching on all the mods available (my favorite is the Total Realism mod), or the ease of use to tinker with things yourself. Starting with Civ IV the entire game is made through scripts and XML. You can find an open these XML documents with all the gameplay variables and tinker away to your hearts content.
