I was the leader of a clan during the days of Modern Warfare 2, amongst personal friends and a few guys who I knew pretty well from playing with them for a while. I've always had a sort of bad impression of clans in general. I was always a big fan of OpTic Gaming, but as time goes on, I'm slowly realizing that I'm a fan of a few of their individual players, not the clan as a whole. I know that all clans are started with the intentions of being a tight knit team who play well together, but there are always some events that will occur that sour the whole idea for me. Two of the biggest examples are A) Internal strife between players. This will inevitably happen in a clan that is not made up of personal friends. Over time people will take sides and effectively divide the clan, which will cause it to disband. and B) If they get big they will eventually become a bureaucracy, which is all fine and dandy if your running a government or a company, but this is a team for a video game for god sakes, it's not necessary. So basically my opinions on clans are they need to be between personal friends and, generally speaking, getting too big a following and too many sponsorships, will in the end, be the downfall of the clan.
