Yeah its not only classics.

For example, a used copy of Shadowhearts is running well over 30$
A used Copy of Xenosaga 3 is well over 20$ and Xenosaga was one of the most hated franchises on the PS2

I was sort of dissapointed because I just bought a replacement PS2 and wanted to relive some of the gems I missed out on over the last 6 years, but im finding the prices being a lot more than they should be at this point.

Thank god for emulators for the older classics.
emulators that work and don't require you to know ungodly amounts about coding to make work you mean?
In other words, most emulators.(NES, SNES, GAMECUBE, N64, PSX etc)
I have yet to use an emulator that doesn't suck, or works properly 100% of the time

That's insane. There's this retro game store in Austin called Game Over Games and I saw the original Final Fantasy for the NES priced at about $50-60. This is a game made before I was even born priced at what a modern game would be.

If this has changed since then I'm not sure, but then again they also had SNES cult classic Earthbound for about $90-100. It just really depends greatly on what you're buying. Some games are incredibly rare and found by chance, some not so much.

Now for Final Fantasy VII being $80? You can find a better price elsewhere, but keep in mind that if you found someone selling it at Otakon that it's probably in very good condition and that they want to make some amount of profit off it or you could be getting conned through your teeth.

Shit, no one tell Sony! It's only about £9 on the classics store at the minute.

Actually that said, look at how much old games go for as collectors items. You think that's a lot, check out this fucker! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Legend-Zelda-Oracle-Seasons-New-Sealed-VGA-90-/130557567242?pt=Video_Games_Games&hash=item1e65d6610a#ht_631wt_1139

Harvest Moon for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System anyone? They're so rare I barely see them for sale, let alone see them with expensive price tags...

With a little bit of careful timing and sensible bidding on ebay you can get FF VII for pretty cheap on ebay.

Maybe it's a PC related issue since the success varies from computer to computer. Or maybe it's just a PEBKAC situation.
Don't be so quick on blaming the program faulty.

I went though a retro gaming kick a while back, pulled out the SNES and the Sega Mega Drive. Shoped around on eBay, picked up some good old cheap games for around $5 each. Then a friend told me of a local chain store called "Game Traders". I went in had a look around and i was honestly shocked by what i saw.

"Secrets of Mana" for SNES: $168AU! WTF!? "Starfox" for SNES: $65AU. and this one almost made me throw up in disgust Starcraft 64: $89AU. (<~~ worst port ever)

I recall most of these games didn't cost this much new, i get they are collectors items now and Game Traders has a business to support and run but i was unsurprised when they had to move to another mall because they couldn't afford the rent on the old one. balance in all things guys, eBay not only had better prices but better service as well.

I now stick to my Wii and 3DS for all my retro gaming needs because it is the best i can afford.

I recently have returned from Otakon 2011, an experience that was wonderful and full of wonder for me and mine. However, while I was strolling around the Dealer's Room (a place chock full of vendors, for those of you not in the know), I happened upon a booth that is there every year. They are known for buying and selling old video games, all the way back to the original Atari games. Their prices are normally decent, and you can find good old classics for relatively cheap.

However, they were selling a coppy of Final Fantasy 7 for the orignal Playstation, marked at $79.99. Is it that classics are expensive, or was it simply a fluke? Anybody run into similar situations?
the grandest irony is FF7 isn't worth that much :p

but yeah, its pretty common for older games that where good to ether maintain or go up in value
last time i looked though and mind you its been a while so feel free to correct me

Lunar 1 an 2 (PS1)
Valkyrie Profile (PS1)
went for more, used
Lunar 2 was like $120

Just try and find a copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga under $100. =p It doesn't help that Europe and America only got about ten thousand copies each. (I was smart and bought my copy at launch)
I picked up a copy a couple years back at a yard sale for 5 dollars and I still don't even have a Saturn to play it on. umad? :D

On the topic of FF7 it depends on the packaging. The original black boxed version is kinda looked at like the original LoZ gold case. Its considered collectible. The green PS classic version you can find cheap just about anywhere..or you know...digital copy on ur console of choice.

Only if you don't get a Saturn so you can enjoy this masterpiece of JRPGs. Not to mention I know someone who will be very cross if you don't play Sega Saturn.
