I don't suffer effects of the Uncanny Valley. The "hilariously bad" faces in Oblivion didn't break the immersion for me at all.

I feel... so alone...
I felt the same way. I didn't notice anything wrong with the faces.
Same. It takes a lot more then faces to break immersion in a game for me.

[sub]Though I think the oldest son is an excellent example of a truely hideous child.[/sub]

It's so easy to dip into the uncanny valley.

It can be avoided though, even with ultrarealistic characters. Good character design, animations and a slight cartoony sheen can do wonders. It's been so long since Half Life 2 release, but still no video game character has a face quite as good as Alyx Vance. Though even she can slip a little when outside a scripted event.
Fully agree. Even MASS EFFECT 2, a game completely dependant on its characters, suffered so many facial flaws.

One of HL2's advantages is they individually modelled each character, even the "random people" (citizens) have about 7 or 8 facial versions.
Also, I'll note that UNLIKE many modern game developers who use motion capture to get a real-live performance, Valve actually scripts out all their expressions. They built the original facial system off muscles from live actors, but after that they manually control individual muscles for their scenes. (this is actually the sort of work I do for BM, a mod of HL2)

Random factoid, thought some people might find it interesting.

You know even if it was a joke I still agree, the characters can be downright hideous sometimes.

The kitten definatly comes first.

OT: I never really noticed that the children had freaky faces in Heavy Rain. Maybe next time i play it now that it's been brought up i'll notice.

So, Marcus and Dom are the epitomes of "ruggedly handsome"? People who live in glass houses, yadda yadda yadda.
I think it is less of the whole "good looks" quality of the characters that CliffyB sees as the problem, more the fact that the characters in Heavy rain do not look human at all, children especially.

I mentioned in one of my articles back when my old website was up that if you want your characters to look believable and realistic, make them old, IE: Admiral Kobel (RFG), Theophile (Alone in the Dark) Captain Cutter (Halo Wars) old. Simply, making the characters have more facial features and signs of wear goes a long way towards making the characters actually look human, as far as I am aware, there are few game characters that look more human than John Forge and Captain Cutter of Halo Wars, but this is almost entirely down to the fact that their age gives their characters some facial and body embellishments that you wouldn't see on a younger character, the only situation in which this rule does not seem to apply is when dealing with Doctor Kliener, that old sumbitch looks like an alien no matter what light you put him under.

What do you guys reckon, is it easier to recognise old characters in games as "near human" in terms of appearance or not?

It wasn't so much how they looked so much as how they sounded.

I swear, the people who voice-acted the kids made my ears bleed every time I heard them.

Still loved the game though, and the "uncanny valley" effect didn't really do much to me personally.

My point is, the characters he makes are fuck-ugly, and he is in no position to call any other company's characters hideous.
You missed the point completely. He's not necessarily talking about the physical appearance of the textures/model (though that is important), but to the quality of the animation. A bad animation can immediately ruin the best model, and I notice Heavy Rain has a lot of animation flaws.

So yes, Marcus and Dom may not be the most handsome devils around, but the animation quality is consistently high caliber. Couple that with the stylistically exaggerated design of Gears of War's universe and you have characters that fall into the uncanny valley much less often than the attempted hyper-realism in Heavy Rain.

The characters in the series all seemed to have weird, and very unique...quips. I think it was one thing I did like about them, all very different

Before you label the comment a bash on Heavy Rain, Bleszinski later tweeted: "This was a JOKE people. Some gaming "press" is becoming *very* tabloid these days. I LOVE Heavy Rain."
Haha, he totally called it. A lot of the gaming press (including this site) are always twisting industry folks' words, and creating false sensational headlines. The press needs to be called out on it. +5 respect for Cliffy B.
For what exactly? He gets mad that people take his words and make articles based on them? There's a simple solution to that problem, Cliffy, and that is to stop talking.

Course that's not going to happen given how much he seems to love the sound of his own voice.

I agree to an extent. Call me unhuman but Marcus looked a bit more natural then some of the Heavy Rain faces.

Well when your loading screens are of the character's faces in extreme close-up while they stare into your soul you shouldn't be surprised if you're suddenly riding a dune buggy over the Valley's edge.

I wouldn't call that being angry, it's pretty clear he was just making sure that people understood him correctly. All he's saying are his thoughts on the game, he's not insulted by the articles, he just wants to point out that they do have the habit of jumping on every negative comment and using it as a punchline. Good to see the Escapist is not one of those publishers though.

Not only are they hideous, they act like they've had their frontal lobes removed. Even five-year-olds know not to wander away and then run out into the street.

I loved Heavy Rain but it did have indeed problems not just with the uncanny valley but characters that looked off kilter (Not in a realistic way but in the way they didn't meet the standards) and line delivery. The children did were indeed freaky as hell.

I was having a debate with my friend wondering whether Jason and Shaun had autism or some sort of disorder. My friend brought it up as a joke on the game's hit or miss animations and voice acting but I seriously thought we could be on to something. The way Jason and Shaun's faces shifted was extremely peculiar, looking familiar to someone with autism, down syndrome or bell palsy. How they talked was very peculiar. And lastly a child as old as Jason should have known not to stray off in a crowd, let alone leave a large building in a trance like way to cross a street and run across traffic.

Actually I did too. So either you are perfectly sane or we are both crazy!

I just want to say that stop overreacting to Cliffy's statement. All he said was that he experienced them to be uncanny. Gears of war's characters are hilariously disproportionate and never get close enough to realism to fall into the uncanny valley.
