Here is my theory of the uncanny valley: I'm not sure there is any particular increase in watchability as we move toward realism. R2D2, Mario, and Pokemon do not suffer any lack of popularity, and are all safely far away from the uncanny valley.
But there is a problem when we get to "close but not quite" realism, and I don't think that is in the appearance. I don't think screenshots can truly bring out uncanny valleys unless the image is deliberately created to look "off."
The uncanny valley I believe is in the animations. If a realistic character looks stiff, awkward, or leaden, or just incongruent for age appropriate movements of the character, it's just wierd. A mask of a real person is always going to look wierd because there is no facial motion at all, even if the mask is otherwise photo-realistic.

Good one. Well, at least the human baby wasn't dead last for me but tied for last with the alligator. Humans take so much nurturing and care that there may be an anti-cute impulse toward them, unless it is yours.
