Their faces? For me, it was their voices that I found hideous. The adults were alright most of the time, but the kids? Some of the worst voice acting I've heard in gaming. Kids do not sound like that... That part where Jason asks for a balloon, "Please dad, I would really love to have one" is stuck in my brain for all eternity as one of the most poorly voiced lines I've ever heard.

That was exactly what I was thinking. The way their faces were animated creeped me out the most.

I didn't find much wrong with the kids, but then again I didn't play it for long.

I was more concerned by the fact the kids were French despite coming from an American family.
it could have been worst they could have British accents instead
British jokes are only good when they're funny. Also, "British" accents don't exist. You mean posh, stereotypical English.

Heavy Rain's best looking character for me, was ironically the one with the least screen time. Did anyone remember the ***SPOILERS shopkeeper that Shelby encounters early on? I thought he looked fantastic! SPOILERS***
I agree, the children were a little disconcerting. Nothing terrible though, compared with some of the other games I've played.

I loved Heavy Rain but it did have indeed problems not just with the uncanny valley but characters that looked off kilter (Not in a realistic way but in the way they didn't meet the standards) and line delivery. The children did were indeed freaky as hell.

I was having a debate with my friend wondering whether Jason and Shaun had autism or some sort of disorder. My friend brought it up as a joke on the game's hit or miss animations and voice acting but I seriously thought we could be on to something. The way Jason and Shaun's faces shifted was extremely peculiar, looking familiar to someone with autism, down syndrome or bell palsy. How they talked was very peculiar. And lastly a child as old as Jason should have known not to stray off in a crowd, let alone leave a large building in a trance like way to cross a street and run across traffic.
I've not played Heavy Rain (no PS3, for good or for bad), but just going off the "Press X to Jason" video linked above, I have to agree with your last points. That kid looked too old to be running off and be excited by those balloons that much.

Or it could just be poor writing.

Here is my theory of the uncanny valley: I'm not sure there is any particular increase in watchability as we move toward realism. R2D2, Mario, and Pokemon do not suffer any lack of popularity, and are all safely far away from the uncanny valley.

But there is a problem when we get to "close but not quite" realism, and I don't think that is in the appearance. I don't think screenshots can truly bring out uncanny valleys unless the image is deliberately created to look "off."

The uncanny valley I believe is in the animations. If a realistic character looks stiff, awkward, or leaden, or just incongruent for age appropriate movements of the character, it's just wierd. A mask of a real person is always going to look wierd because there is no facial motion at all, even if the mask is otherwise photo-realistic.

Nature is a cruel mistress.

Please rate the following babies in order of cuteness:
Good one. Well, at least the human baby wasn't dead last for me but tied for last with the alligator. Humans take so much nurturing and care that there may be an anti-cute impulse toward them, unless it is yours.

This holds true for as long as the object/robot/virtual character in question remains obviously not human, but possesses human-like qualities. The uncanny valley kicks in when the similarities with humans are almost perfect, but not quite - when the virtual being has more points of similarity with us than it has differences.

Isn't that cute, Cliffy B. thinks people give a crap about his opinion.
As much as the reasonable side of me was tryi to form a cherent, non abusive yet solid opinion about this thing, somewhere in teh back of my head the real me was saying just that.

More OT: Um, yeah, I honestly didn't really pay attention to the children's looks. What did bother me was how fucking stupid they were though. Shit, how hard is it to not walk in front of a car? Seriously?
I think I know a little of how my parents felt now. Geez, if HR taught me anything, it's that 1) Marriage sucks and 2) children ruin your lives.

You're goddamn right I did! Fuck babies man, kitties are so much much cuter.
You might actually find that that's illegal. I'm not sure, you'll have to look up the law where you live.

But you're right about kitties being > anything else.

When I wanting to throttle Jason, it wasn't because his face. It was because he is a whiny BRAT. Hate that kid.
