Sultan Al Jaber claims there's "no science" supporting the idea that a phase-out of fossil fuels is necessary to keep warming at or below 1.5c. Also repeats the old nonsense trope that phasing out fossil fuels would take us "back into caves".

Well, he does seem like someone we should listen to, with no personal motives for such a stance.

There's one teeny-tiny problem with his argument: The world's supply of coal, oil and gas are limited. So not weaning ourselves off of them while we can will "send us back to the caves", permanently.

What a surprise! It was sheer aburdity to put a guy running a massive oil firm in charge of Cop. How else did anyone think this was going to turn out? The thing is, I think this suited a great deal of international leaders, because why not subvert and embarrass Cop from the inside by simply installing a fossil fuel stooge to run it? Western leaders would have done it themselves, were it not for the fact it would be a little too publicly embarrassing.

Oil producers can earn vast billions from fossil fuels, spend a thousandth of that on PR campaigns to mitigate the reputational damage, and a hundredth of it on a "loss and damage fund" that will never come close to compensating countries for the actual loss and damage they experience from climate change.

So, COP28 will be kicking off, hosted by the UAE. ADNOC, the UAE's state oil company, is the company with the single most harmful expansion plan in the world to the net-zero goal. It was also leaked that the hosts had planned to use COP28 to promote oil deals-- it's unclear if those deals will still receive promotion now the hosts have been pressured into denials.

...but another big polluting industry aiming to have a huge presence is meat & dairy. JBS, the largest food processing company in the world, aims to lobby hard on behalf of meat & dairy. The dairy industry remains one of the biggest polluters, above even aviation.

No wonder people have dwindling faith in the political initiatives to tackle climate change. The UAE hosting COP28 strikes me as a bit like appointing Harold Shipman as Chief Medical Officer.
WEF politics as usual.

Switching from fossil fuel to solar and wind power in the EU has reduced the power generation section's emission by 24 % since 2022. At least some positive news.

We are so fucked.

How is climate change not above gun violence, if you want to see real deaths, and horror imagine millions dead every summer at a bare minimum.

I appreciate the acknowledgement that your doomsday scenario is imaginary.

The WHO estimates an additional 250 000 deaths per year due to climate change, from 2030 to 2050. Where did you get "millions" from?

Are you talking of effects that the WHO did not account for? Like the polar ice melting and the resulting additional climate refugees or if failing harvests lead to war?

Yes I am geopolitics is a thing. And I am basing it on the Hansen report/the worst case scenario.

Well, you have to imagine. We aren't seeing deaths that we can point at and say this is due to climate change. Sure, the numbers of people dying from various things will increase, but mostly in the future, and difficult to say this person died from climate change, this person would have died anyway.

Gun violence is a more obvious, more now problem.

But yeah, climate change will be much worse.

Also at this point, most individuals cannot see or feel the impact of climate change in a way which something like gun violence or cost of living impacts them.

It's still a bit abstract.
