I was kind of hoping they could release versions on the Xbox as well, to be honest, through XBL, but obviously that'll never be the case. Which is a shame since as an Xbox 360 and PS2 owner, I have to spend a very long time hunting down the now rare copies of FF VII, and indeed anything before FFX, that are for sale. And I don't have the time or energy to do so. Plus, Nintendo have more remakes and ports of the older games than any Sony consoles do, and it's unfair that us Xbox owners have to miss out because of the overwhelming lure of the colour green...
Well, if you want to get a copy of those games, all it'll really take is a few searches on Amazon. I find new copies of the US version for 8 and 9 for under $20 on the US site, and while you live in the UK, the UK site for Amazon has a copies of 7, 8, and 9 for what looks between 20-30 pounds each.

Now, I'm not sure what the conversion rates between the Dollars and Pounds is, so I'll have to leave it up to you to figure out if it's worth it or not.

Okay, someone more "knowledgeable" on the subject than me may have to correct me on this one. When Square remade Final Fantasy whatever the hell the number was (III?) for the DS a few years back I think they made completely new cinematic cutscenes. Granted, I honestly don't know if they just ported the NES version or if they remastered everything, so this may not exactly be a good frame of reference. Still, even knowing that will be a port of the original Playstation game, what would the chances of there being recreated cutscenes in the game?
Final Fantasy III for the DS was completely remade. This is most likely just going to be the PS1 version of VII distributed on the PSN as PSone Classic, considering that's how you (legally) play PS1 games on BOTH the PS3 and PSP. So chances aren't that great.

Now, if they had just mentioned the PSP, then there could've been the chance, like with the PSP Port of Final Fantasy Tactics.

Exactly. It's Aeris, not Aerith, no matter what Kingdom Hearts says.
Can someone please explain to the Kingdom Hearts player that never got a shot at Final Fantasy 7 what the hell you're all talking about?

To be on-topic: my friend can sell me a copy, so I'm cool regardless of remakes/repackaging.
Basically, the character Aeris of Final Fantasy VII has her name spelt as I've spelt it, Aeris. However, there was a translation error when the English language copies were produced during localisation and the spelling came out as Aerith. Ever since, Square Enix has actually said it's meant to be Aeris and that spelling is used in all official merchandise, including English copies of sequels and related media. Despite this, some idiots still like to use 'Aerith' as the spelling, which is petty but still annoying. In Kingdom Hearts they used the spelling 'Aerith', which grated on many people's nerves, mine included. I know it's petty, but still...

And don't worry, I never played FF VII either. Would like to though, very much...

A graphically updated remake would have sold better then a virtual copy.

In my opinion they should have re-released games like Vagrant Story or more obscure games that have grown in more cultish popularity that would be praised and bought probably in a larger number than FF7 copy will be.

I'm probably entirely wrong here but without any new content won't the people that already own the game have zero incentive to rebuy the virtual copy? What then they expect a graphic junkie age of gamers to appreciate and judge a game that at it's time was considered a pinnacle of gaming?

This is just going to cause another series of flame wars...

This could just be Wikipedia being stupid, but
Aerith's original Japanese name is エアリス (Earisu) [eaɺ̠is(ɯ)] Aerith (Japanese).ogg listen (help·info). This has been transliterated to "Aeris" in Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy Tactics, but later as "Aerith". Both transliterations have basis, as the Japanese "su" (ス) is used when transcribing "s" (/s/) and "th" (/θ/) to Japanese. However, official Japanese material uses the spelling "Aerith",[6][7][8] and developers have stated that "Aerith" is a near-anagram of the English word "Earth".[9]
If that's true, then Aeris came first and Aerith was the correction.

Unfortunately the PSP port of FFT turned out to be painfully slow and changed nothing.
Actually, while the port itself was painfully slow in a baffling display of stupidity, some plot important scenes were redone, this time as animated and voiced FMVs. Which is what I thought the guy I pointed this out to was asking about, not scenes that completely change the plot.

Actually, it's the other way around. "Aeris" was the translation error in the English language copy of Final Fantasy VII, while "Aerith" was what it was supposed to be.

I will find this extremely funny if FF7 does come to north america on the PSN because then all the coppies of FF7 that people charge an arm and a leg for should drastically decrease in price.
Good for me, I can finally buy the damn game!

I'm so happy right now! I bet a remake will still happen within 10 years though. Square has a history of re-releasing final fantasy games over and over again. If there's money to be made in a remake, they'll make it.

Why do I get the itchy feeling that Square Enix is trying to trick people into buying this, thinking it's a remake?

Wether or not it's a remake (I highly doubt it is as Square HAS stated that they will not be remaking FFVII, back when they did the PS3 unveiling at E3), I am excited about this. I may even consider buying a PS3 now, as there are a few games coming out that I do wish to play.

I would love to play this on my PSP. I can't see playing the original on the PS3 via PSN, but on the PS3, hell yes!
