Clue is the Latest in a String of Upcoming Remakes

//cdn.themis-media.com/media/global/images/library/deriv/1343/1343396.jpg

After a prior attempt at remaking the adaptation Clue failed, 20th Century Fox and Hasbro are taking another stab at the classic whodunit.

remake [http://www.tracking-board.com/20th-century-fox-gets-a-clue-and-will-produce-classic-board-game-remake-with-hasbro-exclusive/] of the 1985 cult classic boardgame adaptation Clue is in the works, courtesy of 20th Century Fox and Hasbro Studios. The remake will be produced by Josh Feldman, with the plan of telling the story of a "worldwide mystery" with "action-adventure elements." The long term goal appears to include setting the stage for an ongoing international franchise.

An earlier attempt to remake the film was dropped by Universal in 2011. Director Gore Verbinski was to direct then, and it's unclear if he will be involved in the upcoming remake.

The original film featured a brilliant ensemble, including Tim Curry, Christopher Lloyd, Madeline Kahn, Michael McKean, Lesley Ann Warren, Martin Mull, and Eileen Brennan. No cast has been announced for the new project, and it's unclear whether Curry will be making an appearance. The film was seen as a flop in theaters, but ultimately developed a large audience and cult following.

This is something that could work but...you know. It's gonna be hard to top the original. Maybe they'll have multiple endings that change by theater again.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
On one hand there is no way remaking Clue could be good, on the other, there was no reason the original should have been as great as it was, but it was great.

No doubt. The whole idea of a boardgame movie has worked like, twice? An international franchise though? Ugh...

Yeah no. It was a comedy in a mansion. It was good. It was actually faithful to the boardgame in that regards. It had Tim Curry. I can confidently say it will probably not have any of these things.

Just make the movie you want to make, and don't drag down an IP with it. Fucking seriously. Originality isn't dead, but it is a bane to IPs since they waste (poor) originality on things we want to be like something else that already exists.

Id be down for a new Clue movie. Personally, Id make the first "canon" to it, as much as that matters, get a bunch of decent comedians and classier actors who have a sense of humor, and make a wacky, but more adult-oriented (ie not aimed at tweens) black-comedy.

While I wouldn't say I'm burned out on it - I've just only seen one example of people doing a decent job of it - I am on board with the rest of your post. Clue is not a thing that needs to be a franchise. It can sustain one, and probably only one, good movie with its set-up. And they'll probably screw it up from the get-go.
Hollywood needs to re-learn that you should make sure you can put on your pants before you try to run a marathon.

Is this part of that 5-movie deal that produced Ouiji and Battleship? It's... it's just that this is so inexplicable that my brain is trying to stuff it into one moment of coke-induced madness in Hollywood since that would prevent me from knowing multiple groups and multiple times thought board game movies were the hot new IP mine

Between this and It I'm very unhappy. Without Tim Curry (to say the least), all of these movie remakes will be sad.

...

Why not remake The Langoliers? It was almost completely unwatchable (the best character was Balki from Perfect Strangers and he played a phoned-in psycho), but the story is still pretty good, and some modern sensibilities combined with advances in CGI should sell the rest quite well.

Or, you know, better.

Ever since they announced a reboot of Stargate, freaking Stargate, I realized yeah I'm officially putting cinematic universes along with Superhero movies and Alvin and the Chipmunks-style corporate sellouts, on a genre I'm genuinely sick of. Nevermind that it's something new out of a old franchise, there would be no Fury Road of Rogue Nation if there was no dedication or interest, but everybody else must throw their hat into the ring should mean an increase in quality of movies, not get a half-assed movie with so much it wants to set-up that it doesn't bother to do anything good or interesting.

'Pointless 2010s remake' is gonna be an actual, recognized category in the future, isn't it.

No no no no no...

You would do better to just start showing the actual movie that exists already in theaters. It already has the plot, the great acting, the wonderful comedy, and so on. No remake is going to top it.

Okay I'll bite what was the second one? Rather than google/imdb I tried to used the gray matter to recall the other game to movie adaptation. That aside I share in the disdain that a rather functional movie is getting a face lift, a tuck, some botox. Sure they COULD do a better job, but point me to one remake that left people saying "Screw the original!" I'm sure there are ones that are visually better, but some just have you hankering for the first one. Therein lies the rub, our interest (and disinterest) are sparked from our fondness of the original.

Don't worry, the terrorism is just a red herring.

Yeah no. Just... just no.

The current crop of "comedy" actors don't have the range to do something like Clue. Most of them are funny, but only in one specific way and always succeed in the same "kind" of character. In other words "comic" actors of the last decade only play "themselves" well. Like Will Ferrell as the oblivious dipshit or Steve Carrell as the awkward clueless moron or Seth Rogen as a stoner doofus. (By the way that's all of those actors' characters and I've never found a single one actually funny)

There was a scene in Clue where Tim Curry, Colleen Camp, Madeline Kahn, and Michael McKean do a 4-way comedy pratfall. And I remember thinking, "there's more comedy talent in that one pratfall than in any other I've ever seen."

So my suggestion for doing a remake that would be successful. Get an ensemble cast of relatively unknown young actors and one veteran comedy actor that delivers a good performance but dies early on. Put them in a limited space (like the Clue mansion) but make it something different. Like a porn McMansion or a high-rise penthouse. Make sure your script was put together by someone who can do "smart" humor and don't stifle him with notes about how he has to "dumb it down so everyone can 'get it'."

Oh don't give the characters the names from Clue, make the murder about the only thing that the movie has in common with Clue...

And then call it something else and don't give it any connections at all to the previous movie or the board game.

To be fair, you might consider my second pick cheating but I'd say Jumanji. While it's true (I think) that the board game came out after the movie, I'm not sure that really matters. It's a movie based on a board game and it was pretty damned great!

On your other point I tend to agree, though off the top of my head the 1980's remake of The Blob is a much better movie all around than the original. If you're looking for remakes that surpass their originals, horror movies are likely to be your best place to look. There still aren't many but on the whole I'd say you can probably find at least a handful.
