the mass amount of killings in COD.
PETA got that covered when they tried to ban COD 5 for having the "dogs" kill streak

peta also targeted wow for VR seal clubbing which IMO is much better than real seal clubbing and really doesn't encourage anyone to take up clubbing seals as a career
Don't forget Cooking Mama.

Seriously...out of all the games PETA wants to shame.

Not Metal Gear Solid 3, nor the countless Cabela games, but fucking COOKING MAMA!?

Guys and gals of PETA...I love animals just as much you do and God knows how much I hate puppy mills and animal cruelty in general, but holy shit you people can be just as big as douche bags as the people you keep pointing fingers at.
I...Im sorry did you just say that PETA targeted games that depict the simulated production of food? not even in a factory but a small kitchen? you know food right? that pestersom thing that we need to live? that our ansestors have survived on since before PETA even considered using its arse as a place to store its head?

I think that it is reasonable to point out that this game is probably symptomatic of their generally misogynist culture, but what they choose to create is their business.

Not that we are that much better in the West, but I've never been completely comfortable with relativism either. In any case, it is just a game, so the harm it is doing is probably minimal.

Is it proper to criticize foreign gameplay elements?

Hell to the yes. My standards are always the same, foreign game or not. They can't pull the culture-card and claim that it makes them immune to my criticism.
Because your God and what you say goes right?

Way to fail, CNN. The world already knows and has decided that they don't really care.
Everybody knows except for the people who watch CNN seriously...I was in Paris late at night with only one English channel and it was CNN. Was quite bearable if I didn't take it seriously at all.

Should Japan ban RapeLay because a bunch of stupid gaijin threw a ***** fit? No.

Should Americans collectively shut our fucking mouths and realize that the rest of the world views us the way the other kids on the playground view the asshole rich kid, as nothing but a source of cool toys to play with and otherwise not worthy of friendship?

HELL FUCKING YES.
Well put sir... well put.

We have no say in what they do. If they must ban adult games then they must ban adult movies because it is just as easy for someone to get ahold of those.
Exactly, whats worse people stimulating themselves by clicking a button for rape or going out buying and watching obsessively a video of a girl being raped?

OT: Well it seems that CNN has decided that we know all and we're going to stare down Japan until it becomes less dirty minded....Or when these games go out of print either one. Frankly CNN has no right to judge another countries policy on pornography.

"The rest of the world would call pornographic?" Nooooo really? Thanks CNN, perhaps if you would look up "hentai" you would understand. It's just another form of porn, calm the hell down.

HELL FUCKING YES.

At least we don't marry videogame characters and pillows shaped as female anime characters. And then rationalize it to others as if it's a sane idea.

OT: In all honesty I really don't care, if the Japanese don't care then neither do I. Even though Japan is...different, and they are the kings of odd fetishes, let them do whatever they want.

CNN probably had a slow news day. Which just means that CNN journalists should get off their asses and do a better job. A lot of 'news' these days is nothing more then sensation to get higher rathings.
If it's legal in Japan, then let em and STFU about it. I wonder what CNN would do if the rest of the world started whining about all 'non-items' that are wrong with the US but are legal there.

Woo for the american morality police to the rescue! And they were surprised when officials didn't return their calls?
It's sold and played exclusively in japan, if people download it online, that's their problem. Actually just downloading the game would probably be illegal, ironically. It's not a game I have any interest in (unless it's more hilarious than creepy), but the repression of simulated media is always more harmful than good. There's no correlation at all between simulated acts of violence and real violence.

I don't think we have much of a right to force our opinions on them unless it's causing problems, like if they made a racist game.
Also, if they try importing it over here I think we have a right to stop it.

That's pretty much the gist of the situation.

I'd have to agree with your opinion, we really shouldn't be criticizing the way Japan does things. Until we have the exact same culture as them we have no right to do so.

This was THE front-page story on CNN's homepage for most of today. If you actually read the article it implied that these kinds of games are a part of mainstream gaming culture, as is evidenced by this quote:

A spokeswoman would only say over the telephone that the Japanese government was aware that the games were a problem and it was checking to see if self-policing by the gaming industry was enough.

The "gaming industry" at large has nothing to do with this kind of sh**.

I guess they just ran out of stuff to talk about, idk, I guess most of the CNN audience hasn't heard of this game so it will be news to them, lol.

Its their culture, their population has a very small number of females and havent gotten the urge to turn to their fellow man for *company* like many Americans. That aside no its not Americas job to butt into this, let them handle their own country. Also its freedom of speech and press.

Do not try to bring logic into a game with bleeding non-fetus carrying eggs ever again! =P

Also, I'm pleased at all the thoughtful responses this thread is getting.

calling it a game is like calling "backdoor sluts 9" cinema
You're right, it's really more of an 'Interactive Storytelling Experience'.

So it should get put in the same sort of area as Heavy Rain which is...

Hmm *checks*

A game!

Odd that.

I only read the first page of comments. Has anyone pointed out yet the obvious that the Japanese disapprove of the game, as well?

I mean, surely someone has. Surely people wouldn't have the blithering idiocy to assume that rape is an acceptable part of Japanese culture, and would realize that they only turn a blind eye to stuff like this because they'd prefer to forget that the people who enjoy this stuff exist.

I find this intriguing. Honestly, I'm slightly offended that someone would even ask this question. I don't feel like we, as Westerners, have the right to say that Japan shouldn't release media with content such as this, especially considering how much we are supposed to respect freedom of speech. It just comes of as if people are judging a culture they don't know very well harshly because they find something in it, which they are unwilling to look at through the eyes of the place from which it emerged, objectionable. Granted, this is not to say that rape is approved of in Japan, but rather to state that the game itself may not be considered strange there, at least by some portion of the population, and that we don't really have a right to impede upon their culture with our own.
I'm pretty sure voilent rape isn't part of Japanese culture.

Umm...I know. Did you read the part of my post in which I acknowledge that? Basically, I know that it's obviously not a part of the culture, but these games, this media based around the concept, are, at least for a subsection of it.
