Computer engineers are a strange bunch. I should know, i'm becoming one.
SMBC got it right!

I love geeks. It's reasons like this why I am one. Geeks are re-defining the phrase "Waste of time." No longer are so many projects like this a waste of time. Putting doom on a computer that can BARELY play it? Not a waste of time. It just shows that a good programmer can make anything compatible with anything.

Making a giant re-creation of Kanto or Hyrule in minecraft? Not a waste of time. Making lego machine guns that shoot bricks and rubber bands at a rate that real guns can fire? Not a waste of time. Escapist? Not a waste of time. Putting Doom on a TI-83 calculator? You've just scored an 9.5 on my kickass-o-meter.

What no Linux? I though people installed Linux on everything.
But Doom, well... Lol? It has clearly been pointed out that old technology is not useless, it just need to be recycled as devices to play doom on.

I'm surprised - no one has yet jumped in and pointed out the superiority of the PC yet? Well, I'll have a go myself then.

Pffft! Your measly graphing calculator platform is no match for the PC! Bow before the master race!

Doom and Crysis are the twin jokes of gaming. One is impossible to run and the other will run on anything.
...including my cell phone.

It's not actually playable because of a lack of controls, but still...

Meh.
I only got a TI-83 with 96x64 pixels and no shades of gray and all Ive been able to code on that is PacMan and Minesweeper..
I'll try Multiplayer Bomberman next though, so that should be fun.

This is incredible! It looks so awesome too! Man, I don't even own a calculator (other then this computer) and yet someone's got theirs to run Doom!

I'm going to be a teacher and I think this is great. Another way to get students hooked on using the calculators. Personally, I hate working with the things because they have archaic technology in them

Heh. Pretty good.

Of course, it won't do much for math classes, except that all the math classes I ever took banned graphing/programmable calculators anyway.
... Something about actually needing to be able to do the math yourself? XD

MINERALS, NOT ENOUGH OF 'EM
I was going to say, I recall one of my friends having the demo to the original Wolfenstein on his graphing calculator in high school, and that was more than a decade ago. So this doesn't surprise me much.

Wait, what - hasn't this been done for at least a decade now? I remember hearing stories of people making Doom run (at very low FPS and resolutions even lower than the SNES port) on graphical calculators in the late 90's - or was it only the Wolfenstein 3D engine games?
No, you're completely right. DOOM for calculator goes back to 1995, so this isn't at all news. It's still nifty though!

That version of "Doom" isn't actually Doom at all. It's actually just a clone of Wolfenstein 3D with a few graphics from Doom.

What this news post is about is actually quite impressive, however. Unlike that shoddy excuse for a "Doom port" above, this new port is actually a full port of the original Doom engine running on a graphing calculator, something that to my knowledge has never been done before. Thus, what you see in the video in the OP is actually Doom on a graphing calculator, unlike the video above which is just a Wolfenstein 3D-style raycaster engine with Doom assets.
