People have gotten the RROD far before now. You might just be hearing about it, but I'm pretty sure it's been around since the birth of the console.

As for your question, no, it isn't a coincidence. This new rash of RROD is in part due to these newer games coming out that push the system to its limits and thus cause it to burn out. Unfortunately all of these top of the line games put quite a bit of stress on the 360 due their focus on graphics and extensive content (I'm not complaining, just saying), which is only serving to overheat and damage it at a more rapid rate. There's really nothing you can do but hope your 360 can handle the strain and try not to worry about it too much.

They're also looking to purposely risk what could potentially be the 360's best holiday season yet by willfully and maliciously bricking 360s across the world so that gamers will get fed up, buy a PS3/Wii, and not buy 360 games.
