Comic book/graphic novel recommendation?

I'll recommend what I'm currently reading:

Hellboy! Always Hellboy, it's too good not to check it out.

Also for the slightly nerdier aspect: The Flash Volume 3 (currently ongoing)

oh, and I have to throw in traditional recommendations for these BEASTS of graphic novels:

You won't regret Hellboy. It's what got me into comics. I never read them before Hellboy (well, I'd read V for Vendetta before that, but nothing else).

To be honest, it's my opinion that Mignola is right up there with Moore and to a slightly lesser extend Johns (writer of the current Flash comics) in terms of comic-book story-writing ability. Hellboy is just...amazing. Interesting, well-written AND an amazing art style to it.

Wow I sound like a fanboy now...I'll just slink back to my cave.

haha I have quite often ended up sounding like a fanboy, I just roll with it in the end

In the vein of superheroes, I'd wager a VERY tentative recommendation of Moon Knight (2006 onwards) cause I kind of liked it but it's not everyone's cup of tea by far.

Also, a slightly less tentative one for something I haven't read anything of, but have heard good things about: Invincible Iron Man.

Ah yea good old iron man, or new I dunno I lose track with them all with all the reboots and what not.

for marvel comics, i'd recommend Planet Hulk and then World War Hulk trades IF you're wanting to jump into reading comics. For DC, maybe Blackest Night? Or one of the batman n robin/ red robin trades. Both are pretty good (pre return of bruce wayne).

If you're just wanting to stick to graphic novels then... um... V for Vendetta? One or 2 of the Superman trades? I hear All Star Superman is one of the best out there (i havn't read it, just heard from numerous review sites. You could always just play it safe and get Watchmen, shouldn't be too difficult to find.

I will probably make a total ass out of myself but didn't they made a film or an animation at least of planet hulk?

Yeah they all sound good, I will look into them, Watchmen a few people have said so I will try and get that.

It is pretty good, yeah. Not my favorite by any means, but still good. Weirdly brutal too, which I didn't expect from a Marvel superhero.

I liked the kick-ass film so I am going on a blind assumption that I will like the book.

I have just completed Arkham Asylum (the game, yeah I am that far behind the times) that is what got my thinking about reading comics/graphic novels in the first place.

Um...yeah about Kick-Ass the movie, it has a much more optimistic ending then the graphic novel which has one of the most nihilistic ending I have ever seen.

I read Scott Pilgrim on for free (SHHHHHH don't tell anyone) and I felt somehow ripped off.


Also Read the Arkham Asylum :Serious House on Serious Earth graphic novel its um... different

Sandman is probably my favourite, but it only picks up after the end of the first arc, with is issue 8. I'd recommend skipping it, even if continuity might suffer later.

Other than that, anything Warren Ellis has ever written, but specially Transmetropolitan.

I hear All Star Superman is one of the best out there (i havn't read it, just heard from numerous review sites.

OH GOOD GOD THIS! All-Star Superman is nothing short of brilliant.

Also, some DC monthlies coming out next month that I would recommend, if you're interested in starting with that kind of thing.

Secret Six #31 - Secret Six is a comic about a group of anti-villain mercenaries for hire. It's written in a deeply dark and comical way and, in my selective reading of the title, it hasn't failed to make me laugh. #31 is the start of a new storyline so you wouldn't be jumping into the middle of a story but you might be confused by unfamiliar characters. It's easy enough to read previous information on the web though.

Power Girl #22 - Power Girl seems like a pretty fun book (I'm not reading it myself) and has been held in high regard for quite some time. I've read some of the older issues and it has a fun, lighthearted tone to it that is missing from a lot of comics coming out in this day and age. It's just coming of the back of a huge story at the moment but this issue should be the start of something new. Or, alternatively, how can you not want a book with a cover like this [http://www.dccomics.com/media/product/1/7/17226_400x600.jpg]?

Xombi #1 - A fresh, new title. Should be easy for absolutely anybody to get into. Xombi is about scientist David Kim, who is immortal and (from what I'm led to believe) gets up to all sorts of supernatural hi-jinks. Also, Nuns with guns [http://www.dccomics.com/dcu/comics/?cm=17612] (in the second issue, at the very least).

There are a fuckton of great comics out there that I'm not mentioning as well. I just felt like highlighting those three because they're cool.

Logicomix is worth a look; it's all about Bertrand Russell and math and philosophy, and it's really quite compelling.

Preacher is top notch graphic novel,
irregardless of what yahtzee had said, it is a well written comic

also, american vampire is pretty good, thought it's not done yet.
Finally, the walking dead has been pretty good so far

I did hear the comic book was more brutal than the film (I'm on about kick ass now I should have said at the start)

secret safe with me, I'm just borrowing them of a friend as he said Scott Pilgrim was awesome and I have had a few recommendations on here bout it. Whether I will lose them within about 5 mins of having them through is a different matter.

Hellboy. Best introduction to comics ever.

When you're done with that and B.P.R.D., read Y: The Last Man, The Walking Dead, and like everyone's suggesting, Transmetropolitan. It is an absolutely brilliant piece of literature. Watchmen isn't bad, but it's vastly overrated.
Afterwards, read Scott Pilgrim, and everything by Brian Wood. His writing is universally excellent.
