Imagine if they made the movie twice and in the dvd/bluray menu you choose male or female lol that would be cool
I am thinking Brad Pitt could probably pull it off very well. He is a very good actor and has played a huge variety of roles. He also looks quite a bit like the default Shepard.

outside the batman movies christian bale is a terrible choice and i really hate how he acts
as for my choice i dont know Mathew fox's imdb page says he's attached to the project but since ive only seen him as racer x in speed racer im not convinced he's the best choice
id go for Sam Worthington as he played a nice military character in avatar and terminator salvation (infact he was one of the better leads in that movie WAY serpassing Bale)

Sheperd should be a little cocky or have a swagger in his/her step at the very least. Both of these two could pull it off really well with the right vibe IMO. Channing would have to learn how to be careful of seeming too forelorn or troubled. Michelle would have to watch it and make sure she doesn't swagger too much. But I think either one of these two could pull off a good role simply by keeping an eye on their own reigns. It suits them. Shepard is cocky.

Katee Sackhoff or Michelle Rodriguez. Right now, they're the only mainstream actresses with the right body build and the attitude. Only problem, the latter can't act and the former's too happy.
The problem with Shepard is that he's/she's a Big Damn Hero type, and there are only a limited supply of actors that can play that part. Most of them are aging (Bruce Willis, Bruce Campbell, Nathan Fillion) and there aren't any real young contenders for that spot. Jason Statham's funny but entirely wrong. Ok, as a compromise, we'll stick Joseph Gordon-Levitt in because I'm convinced he can play any role, *any role*, he likes and do well.
