let me tell you about good games. Good games are what make you leave your bedroom/living room, and immerse you in their world. You are the character, you feel emotions because of the game and you are immersed.
Which brings me to my question.
DO you feel compassion for enemy NPCs?
Because I certainly do. In Oblivion whenever I kill a bandit or an NPC I instantly feel bad and have to restart from my last checkpoint.
Same goes in Assassin's Creed 2. I only use weapons when they must be used, when I confront guards I normally just use fists, or disarm them and they run away.
Am I weird or does anyone else do this?

Yes, I do feel compassion.

It's the sign of good story telling. I usually let the in game world absorb me if I really enjoy the game.

I feel awful killing anyone in Fallout 3 or Dragon Age when a fight could have been avoided.

Worst ever guilt...

Failing speech test with Button Gwinett and having to blow the old robot to bits in order to get the declaration of independance.

It was made worse by him saying he knew I was a better fighter but he would defend it with his life.

Felt really shitty after that one.

It certainly seems more realistic for you to do that in Assassin's Creed...I'm sure the creed forbids the needless killing of guards too. I still pick fights with the guards though... just because hidden blades + counter = epic.

I still feel guilty about playing Halo 1 and levels of Halo 2 having to kill the elites because to me they are bretheran.
Also I still feel guilt at killing the grunts and killing the Engineers in ODST.

I'm not like most Halo fans, I have second thoughts about killing aliens.

Ohh Jesus...not the 'I'M AN ELITE MEGA FANBOY COSPLAYER!' schtick. :)

I feel guilty for having to kill in games sometimes.
But it still comes down to the fact that if I didn't kill them, they'd be more than happy to do me in.
Sometimes I can just go on guiltless killing sprees.

What am I, Ray Palmer, deputy lantern of compassion?

No I don't care about NPCs they all inspire hate, much like any unrealistic shit out there, from forum personas to furries.

... wait. Should I take that back considering I'm on a forum with an ad for a furry show down the side?

.... hard choice.

Although I say that, there's probably some enemies i feel bad about killing in games... just can't think of any.

I only play nice games, meaning I don't have to kill anyone.
/sarcasm

actually no I don't feel any compassion for killing someone in video games,
although I do feel bad for every guitar bass smashed ever..

Aww I know, that little chap was awesome. I felt bad about blowing his metal ass away, but it had to be done :(

He did have a cool wig that I looted though, so it wasn't all for nothing...

I also felt really bad when Lucas Simms gets killed. He was such a great guy, and he has a little kid *sniff*

I always save Lucas. If you quickly blow Burke's head off after telling Lucas about him, no-one gets mad at you and you gain good karma.

Ah cool, I'll give that a go. I might have tried something like that before, but I was too afraid the whole town would rise up in arms against me, and I'd have to massacre the lot of them.

Nope, Apparently they all hate Burke so it's fine to kill him. Yay!

Also, if you're a female character you can seduce him and break his heart.

Yep.

When playing a game - I do try and do the "nice" thing. I try to beat the game without killing anyone...

It isn't always an option, but I do try.

Sometimes the "bad-guys," aren't that bad.
