Have you backed a completed kickstarter (specifically a game)? Have you played a game that was originally kickstarted? What was your experience with it and what did you think about the finished product?

I'm interested in seeing some concrete experience with videogame kickstarter projects and how the turn out. There's a lot of talk about the potential advantages, disadvantages of kickstarter and it's hard to go a month without someone singing it's praises in the videogame industry, or foretelling utter doom. But very rarely do they ever have more than anecdotal evidence of one failed project or one runaway success, so it would interesting to see a broader spectrum of what actually happens. It's important because trying to judge the risks involved is a key part of backing, but without some wider experience it's hard to make that call.

I've backed a lot of projects but they're all fairly big games that haven't been finished yet. What are the games that have already come out of kickstarter? There was FTL which was well received, Shadowrun Returns which was supposedly good but not exceptional...

I have backed three that have been released, Pixel Kingdom, Timber and Stone and Two Brothers. Planetary Annihilation is in late beta and should be on track for launch next month, which will be the first of my high profile games to launch.

Pixel Kingdom is a simple little defense game that had a low target and was finisohed with little fuss. Although its very simple, I still play it from time to time, mainly to see how high I can get the numbers to go. :p

Timber and Stone was a little over the estimated time, however the higher tiered backers received beta builds, so we at least had something to do while we were waiting for the final release. It plays somewhat similarly to dwarf fortress, although it is nowhere near as detailed as DF is. This is the kickstarter game that I've gotten the most time out of.

Two Brothers took its time. It was estimated to release at the start of this year, and it finally launched earlier this month. I've barely touched this one, as the first attempt at playing saw me start the game, get through the intro scenes and the first cave I entered bugged out and sent me outside the game world (I entered the cave from the overworld and on the other side was a black void with multiple rooms around me, none of which I could enter). Its been patched now, but I might leave this one for a while...

I backed Shadowrun Returns and I have to say that I actually liked it. I wasn't sure what to expect from it, but I think they did a good job given the resources and the material they had to work with. Some things could and should have been better though.

expectations for shadowrun were exceptionally high to say the least. its a very linear rpg which actually fits the style of the tabletop game witht he published campaigns it just felt weird seeing it in a computer format for alot of people, the expansion is alot more open world which will be interesting to see
yep definitely. although from what I hear the modding was not the easiest thing in the world, so I do believe they could've done better in that department, it would've really allowed the game to flourish. I enjoyed the campaign well enough though, easily worth the money I backed for it.

OT: Grim dawn will be coming out soon I believe, so whenever I get the key for that I can tell you about it, but from what I've seen it's shaping up; and as mentioned shadowrun returns was quite a bit of fun, exactly what I was expecting in terms of fun vs how much I paid.

I didn't back anything really small; as alot of ideas didn't really have experienced people to back them, so it's hard to just give money to something like that...in the next year though I think some major kickstarter games are supposed to be coming out (at least beta's for them) so we should have a much clearer picture on kickstarter successes (or failures)

Just Shadowrun Returns, so far. I'm fairly impressed with what the community has done with it, though the save system leaves a lot to be desired. Overall, worth more than I paid.

Wasteland 2 is coming soon. Higher hopes for it.

I almost backed Castle Story... kind of wish I had now.
