I'm using a Windows vista ultimate service pack 1, on a Asus gaming version laptop anyhow everytime I start up a few minutes later it randomly freezes and won't alllow me to click on anything, but still allows movement of the mouse, I've virus scanned nil, I've allowed it to check the drives nothing, can anyone please help me? Or tell me if you need more info.

Thanks in advance and sorry if I've made a mistake with anything I need to get this in before the crash.

Edit: I'm back for the next three minutes, ...sigh it's crap like this that makes me can't wait for my computer to come in on the 24th sure it's seven years old but atleast it works and I don't have to force quit every 5 seconds.

Also please none of this "Buy a Mac" or such because my dad (the owner of the laptop) is way too stubborn to consider that it wasn't my fault and he already has all his work shit on here.

Buy XP. Vista is about as stable as a one-legged-elephant.

On topic, I would say either one of your drivers is screwy or your motherboard is dying. I'd say it's more likely a problem with the motherboard. Is there a ComputerHospital around where you are?

edit: I misread, I thought you said you COULDN'T move the mouse.

edit2: Or a corruption of the OS

Wouldn't I lose all programs then? and how would I go about doing this (Safe mode I know)
Well the only way it ever prompted me to do this is when my computer turned to shit and crashed and I had to restart it via power button. I'm sure there is a way I just never tried to find it. But yes you would lose all your files but you would start your computer over as new.

Wait...what about system restore?

At this point i assume formatting your computer and losing your data is a small price to pay for a working computer. You could try hooking up to a HDD and quickly transfering your data but i doubt you can do that in 5 minutes.

Also... wth man no ways am i gonna ask you to buy a mac. =P
Srsly macs cost too much, if im not wrong apple makes a profit of 80% per mac, possibly more.
Anyways if formatting doesnt work. You should send it to your nearest asus tech support center since it's most likely hardware then.

Most computer retailers make a shit-pot load of money from computers, because they know the consumer probably doesn't know a lot so they can charge what they want.

Ok lets just assume I'm thick for threads sake and allow me to ask: huh?
Chances are if you're asking then its safe to assume it's not a viable option in this case.
However just fyi, it's basically a method of creating a ' checkpoint ' that you can roll back too in case things go bad, corrupted drivers, OSes etc. On vista you create these checkpoints by going to start ---> control panel -- > system and maintenance --- > Backup and restore center.

Edit: Some retailers, im not sure about asus, set system restore on by default so follow above steps to check if you have an option to roll back by clicking on " Repair windows using system restore " At the left hand bar

Yeah it's there, I hoped it wouldn't have to be too drastic, but if that is what needs to be done then fine, I'll just wait till I get "Parental approval" ...sucks to be 13.

try ending the Explorer process before the crash, and then restart 'explorer.exe'. (use the task manager to do both of these)

other than that, i'd suggest sending it to see a doctor

I had a not disimilar problem with my new Sony Vaio laptop running -you guessed it- Vista Premium. Running it in Safe Mode is okay if you are able to identify the faulty programme(s)by doing that. But you can get stuck in Safe Mode if you are not careful, which will necssitate a complete reinstallation anyway. I reinstalled the OS but it still had the problem.
I then disabled the monitor off function (instead just using the screensaver) and stopped the other Sony programmes running that duplicate what Windows does. This helps, but my browser still crashes sometimes.

Thats the other thing you can do. Just have Task Manager running the whole time and try to monitor what starts overloading your PC. That way you can shut down before the computer crashes and figure out what is causing the problem. A common problem is dll.exe overloading, which is a sign of a virus.

If stuff like system restore doesn't work, you can try to "repair" your comp. Boot your laptop with the vista disk in it, a few options should appear, select the option "repair". This should repair all the corrupt vista files, while all the non-vista files on your HD, should be preserved.

Tried that and if anything the cpu usage drops when it freezes(6%), all that's coming up is .exe files too.

Sigh...what a Gonzo post.
