Perhaps he was inspecting the tracks around that area? Drilled him indeed.

True, very true. Good point. In fact, shotguns tend to be the causes of such stains.

Unlikely.

Considering that they are machines capable of killing a lot of people if things go wrong, the computer systems are ridiculously redundant.

It's far more likely that it was a mechanical failure, perhaps loss of hydraulic pressure in the brake lines, for example.

Especially since the computer system is designed to be aware of obstacles and correct for them.

Either way, a terrible tragedy...
