I don't see why you wouldn't buy a DSi, aside from price. But I wholeheartedly recommend purchasing a DS of some sort. Buy Bangai-O and Sonic Rush.

Why not get a DSi? You say the reasons are obvious, but I can't think of a good reason not to get one:
-Smaller
-Better Screen
-Downloadable games (plus you get 1000 free credits when you buy and register one)
-Two cameras (which admittedly you'll never use)

Get a DS, that's a definate yes, but at least consider the DSi.
Probably because there's no GBA slot. That's a deal breaker for me too.
The solution is simple: have a GBA (which, if you own GBA games, you probably already have).
Does it hurt, not being able to read at your age?

If he's interested in Guitar Hero, how's he going to play that without the GBA slot?

I also appreciate the fact that I can capture Gengar without having to trade at all by inserting my Sapphire cartrigde. Also as I didn't mention earlier, I'm psyched on the re-release of Gold and Silver, namely Heart Gold and Soul Silver.

You know, since the DS first came out, I have loved it! Then when it broke, I got the DS Lite, which was better for not needing charging as much, being easier to see and not putting a DS shaped bulge in my pocket.

I'd get one, just for the upcoming Scribblenaughts.

Well I think you should get one. Besides the great games said here; a new Golden Sun game is going to be released for the DS. If you haven't played the first two on GBA then I suggest that you check them out. They are great games.

I think its pretty much worth it, it has a ton of exclusive games, there are bound to be some you like. I got a DS around when it came out and haven't regretted it for a moment...unlike the wii...

Meh, you can't expect BC on everything. Especially w/ regards to technology like cartridges. I'd rather have the DSi, w/ the DS Shop, SD slot, camera, internet browser and all the other stuff than have a DS Lite just because it has a GBA slot. I have a GBA specifically for that purpose. And you know what? I can still do multiplayer on the GBA; you can't do GBA multiplayer w/ the DS.

I won't sell my DS Lite because there are some purposes for the GBA slot (like transferring GBA Pokemon to the Diamond/Pearl games, or rumble pak), but it's not necessary and I'd rather not hold myself back.

I got one last week, I picked up pokemon (very addictive even though I am older now, got about 25 hours on it so far), advanced wars days of ruin (story is different to originals, more darker but still good addictive gameplay)

Ah. It seems you are correct. One game seems a rather silly reason to decide a purchase, though.

Yes but buy one of the ones with a red or blue top half as they are made with a better frame that doesn't scratch or smudge as easily. Also regular DS lites have a tendency for the part that attaches the top and bottom screens to slowly break apart while the two colors do not.
this is a true statement, my redtop has been played religiously for about a year, and shows virtually zero wear. while pokemon and advance wars are excellent choices, however, i must advise strongly against guitar hero...i work in a game store and trust me, that abomination is not worth looking at.

anyway, to answer your question, yes, the ds has plenty of great titles but i have blundered many times in looking for them...so, here is a small list to stay away from.

contact, rondo of swords, guitar hero anything, nintendogs...that fire emblem shadow dragon disgrace...

basically, check out your ds games before you buy. the library has some wonderful games, but a lot of crappy ones too.
