Hey guys, I was wondering, do you think the days were consoles were optimised to such an extent that loading times were unheard of, will ever return?
Take Donkey Kong Country for example; that game was the first of it's kinds, (rendered in 3D pretty much) 3D back then was unheard of, yet the NES was capable of running the game with absolutely no lag, and ZERO loading times.
I mean, yeah, there are better graphics nowadays, etc etc, but consoles have come such a long way since then and have improved tenfold from the days of the NES, yet loading times are only increasing..
Also i stand by what i say; alot of games on the market now are pretty much movies with a tiny bit of gameplay in them, take MGS's 1 hour cutscene.. i know MGS has a storytelling device yadayada but one whole hour..

For some discussion, Would you do away with amazing graphics, or other features, if it meant that loading times were completely done away with?

No, I wouldn't. I don't mind a game loading to begin with, and/or after each level. But the TES4 loading-whenever-you-walk-into-a-door is pissing me off. But I'm not sure I would sacrifice todays graphics to improve loading times.

As long as it doesn't completely break the flow of the game I'm ok with current loading times. One slighly annoying one in a recent game is the time spending going floor to floor in the Normandy in Mass Effect.

It's still not a bad loading time but I move up and down those floors a lot. Plus it does take quite a bit to reload an autosave when you die so those runs on Insanity can get pretty tedious at harder parts. But it's just nitpicking really. I haven't played a game recently where it really bothers me.

For the record, DKC was all pre-rendered 3-d models made into 2-d sprites. Nothing in that game was actual 3D at all, despite how it looked.

I hope you can save during the cutscene...I have to share my console. I get an hour on it every three hours (One hour, two hour wait, one hour). That would be just enough to see the cutscene.

That would suck.
